Worry and the inhibition of emotionally valanced stimuli in a directed forgetting paradigm

There is considerable evidence in support of an attentional bias among clinically anxious individuals for threatening stimuli. However, a similar bias is not usually found in non-clinical anxious individuals and neither population has tended to show a response bias for mood-congruent information. We proposed that the measurement of anxiety in normals has previously been flawed due to questionnaires which do not accurately select pathological worry, the cognitive component of anxiety. First, we administered the Penn State Worry Questionnaire and selected only those with the most extreme high and low scores. At the time of testing, these subjects were given a state anxiety measure. From these scores, the high and low state anxiety within trait anxiety subjects were selected. With this selection procedure, we compared all high state anxious individuals to all low state anxious individuals. Our hypothesis was that, we would find significant differences between the high and low state within trait groups in a Directed Forgetting Paradigm. Directed forgetting was observed as a function of state within trait and the valence of the word on recall. Word fragment also showed a directed forgetting effect but no differences were seen for the worry groups. However, a secondary recognition procedure on the completed word fragments showed a bias as a function of worry group. The results are interpreted to suggest that worry has an effect on the availability episodic memory

EXAMINING THE VALIDITY OF A COMPUTERIZED CHAKRA MEASURING INSTRUMENT: A Pilot Study

Context: The chakra system, a complex network of energy vortexes that receive and process energy within the body, has been espoused for centuries in Asian and other cultures to playa fundamental role in the health of individuals. Many illnesses are thought to originate as blocked energy within the chakra system, and are often thought to be caused by unresolved psychological trauma. Recently, instruments have been created to measure chakra functioning, but no studies to date have attempted to determine their validity in accordance with chakra theory. Objective: To determine the validity of the Inneracrive Aura Video System 5.1 (lAV system) by examining the relationship between self reported psychological symptoms and chakra levels. Method: Sixty-four university students, 42 Americans and 22 Jamaicans, volunteered to complete the Symptom Checklist 90-R (SCL-90-R) and the IAV system measuring chakra level functioning. Results: The expected overall negative relationship between chakra levels and psychological symptoms was confirmed. Pearson product moment correlation analysis revealed significant negative correlations between chakra levels and psychological symptoms. Implications for future chakra research are discussed

Over the past two decades the analysis of physical culture has elicited a range of responses grounded on different theoretical orientations. This paper offers some insight into this complex field through an analysis of some of the work produced by the Physical Cultural Studies (PCS) research group at the University of Bath, United Kingdom, in order to understand how physical culture is theorised and how research topics are materialized by that approach. The methodology consisted in analyzing the group’s theoretical production between 2009 and 2016, which results in data organized as two thematic categories: a) epistemological, ontological, and methodological dimensions of PCS; b) research topics in physical culture. We concluded that the theoretical-conceptual approach towards physical culture is far from being fixed and is based on multiple and complex interconnections of social relations, discourses and subjectivities of (in)active bodies.
