The paper will discuss the reform of the legal framework in the light of the EU proposal directive on collecting societies. The focus will be specifically devoted to the Italian situation, where, like in Austria, there is a legal monopoly. The basis of this monopoly has been recently discussed and the Italian legislator has liberalized neighboring rights. According to some scholars this would lead to a re-thinking of the legal system and to the liberalization of copyrights too. On the other hand, we will take into account the relations between the CISAC decision and the EU Services Directive. The re-thinking of the de facto or legal monopoly positions will be analyzed by the paper also from an economic perspective, discussing economies of scale in the peculiar perspective of the division of the relevant markets. In fact, the final view is that the overcoming the legal monopoly is likely to lead to partitioning of the markets which will have the result of, on the one hand, promoting the creation of small collecting societies, which will be dedicated to specific sectors, but, on the other hand, it should facilitate the growth of the power of collecting societies already dominant in Europe (e.g. GEMA, PRS)
Molecular phenotyping and biomarker development: Are we on our way towards targeted therapy for severe asthma?
Although different phenotypes of severe asthma can be identified, all are characterized by common symptoms. Due to their heterogeneity, they exhibit differences in pathogenesis, etiology and clinical responses to therapeutic approaches. The identification of distinct molecular phenotypes to define severe asthmatic patients will allow us to better understand the pathophysiology of the disease and thus to more precisely target the treatment for each patient. To achieve this goal, a systematic search for new, reliable and stable biomarkers specific for each phenotype is essential. This review focuses on the current known molecular phenotypes of severe asthma and highlights the need for biomarkers that could (either alone or in combination) be predictive of the treatment outcome
Human Mature Adipocytes Express Albumin and This Expression Is Not Regulated by Inflammation
Aims. Our group investigated albumin gene expression in human adipocytes, its regulation by inflammation and the possible contribution of adipose tissue to albumin circulating levels. Methods. Both inflamed and healthy subjects provided adipose tissue samples. RT-PCR, Real-Time PCR, and Western Blot analysis on homogenates of adipocytes and pre-adipocytes were performed. In sixty-three healthy subjects and fifty-four micro-inflamed end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients circulating levels of albumin were measured by nephelometry; all subjects were also evaluated for body composition, calculated from bioelectrical measurements and an thropometric data. Results. A clear gene expression of albumin was showed in pre-adipocytes and, for the first time, in mature adipocytes. Albumin gene expression resulted significantly higher in pre-adipocytes than in adipocytes. No significant difference in albumin gene expression was showed between healthy controls and inflamed patients. A significant negative correlation was observed between albumin levels and fat mass in both healthy subjects and inflamed ESRD patients. Conclusions. In the present study we found first time evidence that human adipocytes express albumin. Our results also showed that systemic inflammation does not modulate albumin gene expression. The negative correlation between albumin and fat mass seems to exclude a significant contributing role of adipocyte in plasma albumin
Multibody Computer Model of the Entire Equine Forelimb Simulates Forces Causing Catastrophic Fractures of the Carpus during a Traditional Race
Simple Summary Palios are traditional horseraces held in the main square of few Italian cities. Due to peculiar features of such circuits, adapted to the square architecture and thus characterized by tight curves and unconventional footing surface, horses involved are at particular risk of accidents. Prevention of catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries is a significant issue and matter of debate during these events. In particular, the negotiation of the curves in the city circuits is a significative concern. An experiment was set up to build a model of entire forelimb at the point of failure in the context of a turn comparable to that in a Palio circuit. The model was informed by live data and the output compared to post-mortem findings obtained from a horse that sustained a catastrophic fracture of the carpus during this competition. The objective of this study is to determine the magnitude and distribution of internal forces generated across the carpus under which the catastrophic injury has occurred and describe related post-mortem findings. A catastrophic fracture of the radial carpal bone experienced by a racehorse during a Palio race was analyzed. Computational modelling of the carpal joint at the point of failure informed by live data was generated using a multibody code for dynamics simulation. The circuit design in a turn, the speed of the animal and the surface characteristics were considered in the model. A macroscopic examination of the cartilage, micro-CT and histology were performed on the radio-carpal joint of the limb that sustained the fracture. The model predicted the points of contact forces generated at the level of the radio-carpal joint where the fracture occurred. Articular surfaces of the distal radius, together with the proximal articular surface of small carpal bones, exhibited diffuse wear lines, erosions of the articular cartilage and subchondral bone exposure. Even though the data in this study originated from a single fracture and further work will be required to validate this approach, this study highlights the potential correlation between elevated impact forces generated at the level of contact surfaces of the carpal joint during a turn and cartilage breakdown in the absence of pre-existing pathology. Computer modelling resulted in a useful tool to inversely calculate internal forces generated during specific conditions that cannot be reproduced in-vivo because of ethical concerns
Temporary dense seismic network during the 2016 Central Italy seismic emergency for microzonation studies
In August 2016, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Central Italy, starting a devastating seismic sequence, aggravated by other two events of magnitude 5.9 and 6.5, respectively. After the first mainshock, four Italian institutions installed a dense temporary network of 50 seismic stations in an area of 260 km2. The network was registered in the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks with the code 3A and quoted with a Digital Object Identifier ( https://doi.org/10.13127/SD/ku7Xm12Yy9 ). Raw data were converted into the standard binary miniSEED format, and organized in a structured archive. Then, data quality and completeness were checked, and all the relevant information was used for creating the metadata volumes. Finally, the 99 Gb of continuous seismic data and metadata were uploaded into the INGV node of the European Integrated Data Archive repository. Their use was regulated by a Memorandum of Understanding between the institutions. After an embargo period, the data are now available for many different seismological studies.Publishedid 1825T. Effects of Different Up-Dosing Regimens for Hymenoptera Venom Immunotherapy on Serum CTLA-4 and IL-10
BACKGROUND: Cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4) is involved in the activation pathways of T lymphocytes. It has been shown that the circulating form of CTLA-4 is elevated in patients with hymenoptera allergy and can be down regulated by immunotherapy. OBJECTIVE: to assess the effects on CTLA-4 of venom immunotherapy, given with different induction protocols: conventional (6 weeks), rush (3 days) or ultra rush (1 day). METHODS: Sera from patients with hymenoptera allergy were collected at baseline and at the end of the induction phase. CTLA-4 and IL-10 were assayed in the same samples. A subset of patients were assayed also after 12 months of VIT maintenance. RESULTS: Ninety-four patients were studied. Of them, 50 underwent the conventional induction, 20 the rush and 24 the ultra-rush. Soluble CTLA-4 was detectable in all patients at baseline, and significantly decreased at the end of the induction, irrespective of its duration. Of note, a significant decrease of sCTLA-4 could be seen already at 24 hours. In parallel, IL-10 significantly increased at the end of the induction. At 12 months, sCTLA-4 remained low, whereas IL-10 returned to the baseline values. CONCLUSIONS: Serum CTLA4 is an early marker of the immunological effects of venom immunotherapy, and its changes persist after one year of maintenance treatment
A New Orbiting Deployable System for Small Satellite Observations for Ecology and Earth Observation
In this paper, we present several study cases focused on marine, oceanographic, and
atmospheric environments, which would greatly benefit from the use of a deployable system for
small satellite observations. As opposed to the large standard ones, small satellites have become an
effective and affordable alternative access to space, owing to their lower costs, innovative design
and technology, and higher revisiting times, when launched in a constellation configuration. One
of the biggest challenges is created by the small satellite instrumentation working in the visible
(VIS), infrared (IR), and microwave (MW) spectral ranges, for which the resolution of the acquired
data depends on the physical dimension of the telescope and the antenna collecting the signal. In
this respect, a deployable payload, fitting the limited size and mass imposed by the small satellite
architecture, once unfolded in space, can reach performances similar to those of larger satellites.
In this study, we show how ecology and Earth Observations can benefit from data acquired by
small satellites, and how they can be further improved thanks to deployable payloads. We focus on
DORA—Deployable Optics for Remote sensing Applications—in the VIS to TIR spectral range, and
on a planned application in the MW spectral range, and we carry out a radiometric analysis to verify
its performances for Earth Observation studies
