Infrared emission spectrum and potentials of 0u+0_u^+ and 0g+0_g^+ states of Xe2_2 excimers produced by electron impact

We present an investigation of the Xe$_{2}$ excimer emission spectrum observed in the near infrared range about 7800 cm$^{-1}$ in pure Xe gas and in an Ar (90%) --Xe (10%) mixture and obtained by exciting the gas with energetic electrons. The Franck--Condon simulation of the spectrum shape suggests that emission stems from a bound--free molecular transition never studied before. The states involved are assigned as the bound $(3)0_{u}^{+}$ state with $6p [1/2]_{0}$ atomic limit and the dissociative $(1)0_{g}^{+}$ state with $6s [3/2]_{1}$ limit. Comparison with the spectrum simulated by using theoretical potentials shows that the dissociative one does not reproduce correctly the spectrum features.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Underperforming policy networks : the biopesticides network in the United Kingdom

Loosely integrated and incomplete policy networks have been neglected in the literature. They are important to consider in terms of understanding network underperformance. The effective delivery and formulation of policy requires networks that are not incomplete or underperforming. The biopesticides policy network in the United Kingdom is considered and its components identified with an emphasis on the lack of integration of retailers and environmental groups. The nature of the network constrains the actions of its agents and frustrates the achievement of policy goals. A study of this relatively immature policy network also allows for a focus on network formation. The state, via an external central government department, has been a key factor in the development of the network. Therefore, it is important to incorporate such factors more systematically into understandings of network formation. Feedback efforts from policy have increased interactions between productionist actors but the sphere of consumption remains insufficiently articulated

A numerical study of resistance in a rough walled channel flow where the ratio of roughness length scale to the depth of flow varies over a wide range

Numerical calculations were performed over a variety of two-dimensional rib roughness configurations in which the ratio of flow depth to roughness height was varied from 1.1 to 40. Periodically fully developed flow was achieved by employing periodic boundary conditions and the effect of turbulence was accounted for by a two-layer model. These calculations were used to test the hypothesis that any rough wall resistance may be reduced to an equivalent wall shear stress located on a plane wall. The position of the plane wall is determined by a novel method of prediction obtained by consideration of strearnwise force moments. The resistance is then determined by three dynamically significant length scales: the first (yo) specifies the position of the equivalent plane wall, the second is the depth of flow h and the third is similar to Nikuradse's sand grain roughness k,,. The latter length scale is however depth dependent and a universal relationship is postulated: ks y,, -,= F/Tk where ksw is the asymptotic value of ks at very large flow depths. For the calculation of friction factor, a resistance equation is proposed of the form typical of fully rough flows. These postulates are supported by the numerical model results though further work including physical experiments is required to confirm them. Before applying the two-layer model to this problem it was tested on smooth rectangular duct flows and Schlichting's (1936) long angle roughness experiments. The opportunity was taken to further explore these flows, and in addition calculations were carried out for Grass et al's (1991) open channel rib roughness experiments. The periodic boundary conditions were also applied to a larninar counter-flow plate-fin heat exchanger. Nicotine Enemas for Active Crohn's Colitis: An Open Pilot Study

Background. Smoking has a detrimental effect in Crohn's disease (CD), but this may be due to factors in smoking other than nicotine. Given that transdermal nicotine benefits ulcerative colitis (UC), and there is a considerable overlap in the treatment of UC and CD, the possible beneficial effect of nicotine has been examined in patients with Crohn's colitis. Aims. To assess the efficacy and safety of nicotine enemas in active Crohn's colitis. Patients. Thirteen patients with active rectosigmoid CD; 3 patients were excluded because they received antibiotics. Methods. Subjects were given 6 mg nicotine enemas, each day for 4 weeks, in an open pilot study. At the beginning and end of the trial, a Crohn's disease activity index (CDAI) score was calculated, sigmoidoscopy was performed, and haematological inflammatory markers measured. Results. Mean CDAI decreased from 202 to 153—the score was reduced in 6 patients, unchanged in 3, and increased in one. Frequency of bowel movements decreased in 8 patients and the sigmoidoscopy grade was reduced in 7. Mean C-reactive protein decreased from 22.0 to 12.3 mg/L. There were no withdrawals due to adverse events. Conclusions. In this relatively small study of patients with active Crohn's colitis, 6 mg nicotine enemas appeared to be of clinical benefit in most patients. They were well tolerated and safe
