Salient Object Detection for Images Taken by People With Vision Impairments
Salient object detection is the task of producing a binary mask for an image
that deciphers which pixels belong to the foreground object versus background.
We introduce a new salient object detection dataset using images taken by
people who are visually impaired who were seeking to better understand their
surroundings, which we call VizWiz-SalientObject. Compared to seven existing
datasets, VizWiz-SalientObject is the largest (i.e., 32,000 human-annotated
images) and contains unique characteristics including a higher prevalence of
text in the salient objects (i.e., in 68\% of images) and salient objects that
occupy a larger ratio of the images (i.e., on average, 50\% coverage). We
benchmarked seven modern salient object detection methods on our dataset and
found they struggle most with images featuring salient objects that are large,
have less complex boundaries, and lack text as well as for lower quality

Stimulation seeking and intelligence: A prospective longitudinal study.
The prediction that high stimulation seeking 3-year-olds would have higher IQs by 11 years old was tested in 1,795 children on whom behavioral measures of stimulation seeking were taken at 3 years, together with cognitive ability at 11 years. High 3-year-old stimulation seekers scored 12 points higher on total IQ at age 11 compared with low stimulation seekers and also had superior scholastic and reading ability. Results replicated across independent samples and were found for all gender and ethnic groups. Effect sizes for the relationship between age 3 stimulation seeking and age 11 IQ ranged from 0.52 to 0.87. Findings appear to be the first to show a prospective link between stimulation seeking and intelligence. It is hypothesized that young stimulation seekers create for themselves an enriched environment that stimulates cognitive development. Despite increasing interest in the ways personality can contrib-ute to intelligence in adults (Sternberg & Ruzgis, 1994), stimula-tion seeking in young children is greatly underresearched, and almost nothing is known about its relationship to later intelligence. One study has shown that preschoolers who are low on shyness have higher creativity scores (Kemple, David, & Wang, 1996)
ANN-based energy reconstruction procedure for TACTIC gamma-ray telescope and its comparison with other conventional methods
The energy estimation procedures employed by different groups, for
determining the energy of the primary -ray using a single atmospheric
Cherenkov imaging telescope, include methods like polynomial fitting in SIZE
and DISTANCE, general least square fitting and look-up table based
interpolation. A novel energy reconstruction procedure, based on the
utilization of Artificial Neural Network (ANN), has been developed for the
TACTIC atmospheric Cherenkov imaging telescope. The procedure uses a 3:30:1 ANN
configuration with resilient backpropagation algorithm to estimate the energy
of a -ray like event on the basis of its image SIZE, DISTANCE and
zenith angle. The new ANN-based energy reconstruction method, apart from
yielding an energy resolution of 26%, which is comparable to that of
other single imaging telescopes, has the added advantage that it considers
zenith angle dependence as well. Details of the ANN-based energy estimation
procedure along with its comparative performance with other conventional energy
reconstruction methods are presented in the paper and the results indicate that
amongst all the methods considered in this work, ANN method yields the best
results. The performance of the ANN-based energy reconstruction has also been
validated by determining the energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the energy

Underdiagnosis of mild cognitive impairment: A consequence of ignoring practice effects
INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal testing is necessary to accurately measure cognitive change. However, repeated testing is susceptible to practice effects, which may obscure true cognitive decline and delay detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
METHODS: We retested 995 late-middle-aged men in a ∼6-year follow-up of the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging. In addition, 170 age-matched replacements were tested for the first time at study wave 2. Group differences were used to calculate practice effects after controlling for attrition effects. MCI diagnoses were generated from practice-adjusted scores.
RESULTS: There were significant practice effects on most cognitive domains. Conversion to MCI doubled after correcting for practice effects, from 4.5% to 9%. Importantly, practice effects were present although there were declines in uncorrected scores.
DISCUSSION: Accounting for practice effects is critical to early detection of MCI. Declines, when lower than expected, can still indicate practice effects. Replacement participants are needed for accurately assessing disease progression.Published versio
Recovery of the Historical SN1957D in X-rays with Chandra
SN1957D, located in one of the spiral arms of M83, is one of the small number
of extragalactic supernovae that has remained detectable at radio and optical
wavelengths during the decades after its explosion. Here we report the first
detection of SN1957D in X-rays, as part of a 729 ks observation of M83 with
\chandra. The X-ray luminosity (0.3 - 8 keV) is 1.7 (+2.4,-0.3) 10**37 ergs/s.
The spectrum is hard and highly self-absorbed compared to most sources in M83
and to other young supernova remnants, suggesting that the system is dominated
at X-ray wavelengths by an energetic pulsar and its pulsar wind nebula. The
high column density may be due to absorption within the SN ejecta. HST WFC3
images resolve the supernova remnant from the surrounding emission and the
local star field. Photometry of stars around SN1957D, using WFC3 images,
indicates an age of less than 10**7 years and a main sequence turnoff mass more
than 17 solar masses. New spectra obtained with Gemini-South show that the
optical spectrum continues to be dominated by broad [O III] emission lines, the
signature of fast-moving SN ejecta. The width of the broad lines has remained
about 2700 km/s (FWHM). The [O III] flux dropped precipitously between 1989 and
1991, but continued monitoring shows the flux has been almost constant since.
In contrast, radio observations over the period 1990-2011 show a decline rate
inf the flux proportional to t**-4, far steeper than the rate observed earlier,
suggesting that the primary shock has overrun the edge of a pre-SN wind.Comment: 28 pages, including 3 tables and 7 figures, accepted for publication

The general anaesthetic etomidate inhibits the excitability of mouse thalamocortical relay neurons by modulating multiple modes of GABA<sub>A</sub> receptor-mediated inhibition
Modulation of thalamocortical (TC) relay neuron function has been implicated in the sedative and hypnotic effects of general anaesthetics. Inhibition of TC neurons is mediated predominantly by a combination of phasic and tonic inhibition, together with a recently described ‘spillover’ mode of inhibition, generated by the dynamic recruitment of extrasynaptic γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)(A) receptors (GABA(A)Rs). Previous studies demonstrated that the intravenous anaesthetic etomidate enhances tonic and phasic inhibition in TC relay neurons, but it is not known how etomidate may influence spillover inhibition. Moreover, it is unclear how etomidate influences the excitability of TC neurons. Thus, to investigate the relative contribution of synaptic (α1β2γ2) and extrasynaptic (α4β2δ) GABA(A)Rs to the thalamic effects of etomidate, we performed whole-cell recordings from mouse TC neurons lacking synaptic (α1(0/0)) or extrasynaptic (δ(0/0)) GABA(A)Rs. Etomidate (3 μm) significantly inhibited action-potential discharge in a manner that was dependent on facilitation of both synaptic and extrasynaptic GABA(A)Rs, although enhanced tonic inhibition was dominant in this respect. Additionally, phasic inhibition evoked by stimulation of the nucleus reticularis exhibited a spillover component mediated by δ-GABA(A)Rs, which was significantly prolonged in the presence of etomidate. Thus, etomidate greatly enhanced the transient suppression of TC spike trains by evoked inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. Collectively, these results suggest that the deactivation of thalamus observed during etomidate-induced anaesthesia involves potentiation of tonic and phasic inhibition, and implicate amplification of spillover inhibition as a novel mechanism to regulate the gating of sensory information through the thalamus during anaesthetic states
Observations of TeV gamma-rays from Mrk 421 during Dec. 2005 to Apr. 2006 with the TACTIC telescope
The TACTIC -ray telescope has observed Mrk 421 on 66 clear nights
from Dec. 07, 2005 to Apr. 30, 2006, totalling 202 hours of on-source
observations. Here, we report the detection of flaring activity from the source
at 1 TeV energy and the time-averaged differential -ray spectrum
in the energy range 1-11 TeV for the data taken between Dec. 27, 2005 to Feb.
07, 2006 when the source was in a relatively higher state as compared to the
rest of the observation period. Analysis of this data spell, comprising about
97h reveals the presence of a -ray signal with
daily flux of 1 Crab unit on several days. A pure power law spectrum with
exponent as well as a power law spectrum with an exponential
cutoff and are found to provide
reasonable fits to the inferred differential spectrum within statistical
uncertainties. We believe that the TeV light curve presented here, for nearly 5
months of extensive coverage, as well as the spectral information at
-ray energies of 5 TeV provide a useful input for other groups
