Correlation Induced Inhomogeneity in Circular Quantum Dots
Properties of the "electron gas" - in which conduction electrons interact by
means of Coulomb forces but ionic potentials are neglected - change
dramatically depending on the balance between kinetic energy and Coulomb
repulsion. The limits are well understood. For very weak interactions (high
density), the system behaves as a Fermi liquid, with delocalized electrons. In
contrast, in the strongly interacting limit (low density), the electrons
localize and order into a Wigner crystal phase. The physics at intermediate
densities, however, remains a subject of fundamental research. Here, we study
the intermediate-density electron gas confined to a circular disc, where the
degree of confinement can be tuned to control the density. Using accurate
quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we show that the electron-electron correlation
induced by an increase of the interaction first smoothly causes rings, and then
angular modulation, without any signature of a sharp transition in this density
range. This suggests that inhomogeneities in a confined system, which exist
even without interactions, are significantly enhanced by correlations.Comment: final version, modified introduction and clarifications, 4 page
A Longitudinal Method for Simultaneous Whole-Brain and Lesion Segmentation in Multiple Sclerosis
In this paper we propose a novel method for the segmentation of longitudinal
brain MRI scans of patients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. The method
builds upon an existing cross-sectional method for simultaneous whole-brain and
lesion segmentation, introducing subject-specific latent variables to encourage
temporal consistency between longitudinal scans. It is very generally
applicable, as it does not make any prior assumptions on the scanner, the MRI
protocol, or the number and timing of longitudinal follow-up scans. Preliminary
experiments on three longitudinal datasets indicate that the proposed method
produces more reliable segmentations and detects disease effects better than
the cross-sectional method it is based upon
Attention deficit hyperactivity symptoms predict problematic mobile phone use
Attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed childhood disorder characterised by inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, or both. Some of the key traits of ADHD have previously been linked to addictive and problematic behaviours. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between problematic mobile phone use, smartphone
addiction risk and ADHD symptoms in an adult population. A sample of 273 healthy adult volunteers completed the Adult
ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), the Mobile Phone Problem Usage Scale (MPPUS), and the Smartphone Addiction Scale
(SAS). A significant positive correlation was found between the ASRS and both scales. More specifically, inattention symptoms
and age predicted smartphone addiction risk and problematic mobile phone use. Our results suggest that there is a positive
relationship between ADHD traits and problematic mobile phone use. In particular, younger adults with higher level of inattention symptoms could be at higher risk of developing smartphone addiction. The implication of our findings for theoretical
frameworks of problematic mobile phone use and clinical practice are discussed
A unique therapeutic approach to emesis and itch with a proanthocyanidin-rich genonutrient
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We examined the therapeutic potential of a proprietary <it>Croton palanostigma </it>extract (Zangrado<sup>®</sup>) in the management of emesis and itch.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Emesis was induced in ferrets with morphine-6-glucuronide (0.05 mg/kg sc) in the presence of Zangrado (3 mg/kg, ip) and the cannabinoid receptor 1 antagonist, AM 251 (5 mg/kg, ip). Topical Zangrado (1%) was assessed for anti-pruretic actions in the 5-HT-induced scratching model in rats and evaluated in capsaicin-induced gastric hyperemia as measured by laser doppler flow. In the <it>Apc</it><sup><it>Min</it></sup>mouse model of precancerous adenomatosis polyposis, mice received Zangrado (100 μg/ml in drinking water) from the age of 6 – 16 weeks for effects on polyp number. In RAW 264.7 cells Zangrado was examined for effects on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitrite production.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Zangrado was a highly effective anti-emetic, reducing morphine-induced vomiting and retching by 77%. These benefits were not associated with sedation or hypothermia and were not reversed by cannabinoid receptor antagonism. Itch responses were blocked in both the morphine and 5-HT models. Zangrado did not exacerbate the <it>Apc</it><sup><it>Min</it></sup>condition rather health was improved. Capsaicin-induced hyperemia was blocked by Zangrado, which also attenuated the production of nitric oxide by activated macrophages.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Zangrado is an effective anti-emetic and anti-itch therapy that is devoid of common side-effects, cannabinoid-independent and broadly suppresses sensory afferent nerve activation. This complementary medicine represents a promising new approach to the management of nausea, itch and irritable bowel syndrome.</p
Detecting natural disasters, damage, and incidents in the wild
Responding to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and wildfires,
is a laborious task performed by on-the-ground emergency responders and
analysts. Social media has emerged as a low-latency data source to quickly
understand disaster situations. While most studies on social media are limited
to text, images offer more information for understanding disaster and incident
scenes. However, no large-scale image datasets for incident detection exists.
In this work, we present the Incidents Dataset, which contains 446,684 images
annotated by humans that cover 43 incidents across a variety of scenes. We
employ a baseline classification model that mitigates false-positive errors and
we perform image filtering experiments on millions of social media images from
Flickr and Twitter. Through these experiments, we show how the Incidents
Dataset can be used to detect images with incidents in the wild. Code, data,

Metagenomic analysis of the turkey gut RNA virus community
Viral enteric disease is an ongoing economic burden to poultry producers worldwide, and despite considerable research, no single virus has emerged as a likely causative agent and target for prevention and control efforts. Historically, electron microscopy has been used to identify suspect viruses, with many small, round viruses eluding classification based solely on morphology. National and regional surveys using molecular diagnostics have revealed that suspect viruses continuously circulate in United States poultry, with many viruses appearing concomitantly and in healthy birds. High-throughput nucleic acid pyrosequencing is a powerful diagnostic technology capable of determining the full genomic repertoire present in a complex environmental sample. We utilized the Roche/454 Life Sciences GS-FLX platform to compile an RNA virus metagenome from turkey flocks experiencing enteric disease. This approach yielded numerous sequences homologous to viruses in the BLAST nr protein database, many of which have not been described in turkeys. Our analysis of this turkey gut RNA metagenome focuses in particular on the turkey-origin members of the Picornavirales, the Caliciviridae, and the turkey Picobirnaviruses
Morphometric characteristics of basal cell carcinoma peritumoral stroma varies among basal cell carcinoma subtypes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The role that the peritumoral stroma plays in the growth of tumours is currently poorly understood. In this manuscript the morphometric characteristics of basal cell carcinoma subtypes and their associated peritumoral stromas are presented.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Ninety eight digitized basal cell carcinoma histology slides were categorized as infiltrative, nodular, or superficial subtypes, and were analysed using a combination of manual and computer-assisted approaches. The morphometric characteristics of the tumour nests and their associated peritumoral stroma were quantified, and the presence of a marked immune reaction or elastosis was noted.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The tumour to stroma ratio was different among each tumour subtype. Elastosis was identified in a greater proportion of the infiltrative tumours.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Quantitative differences exist between the peritumoral stroma of basal cell carcinoma subtypes. Future work exploring the relation between these morphometric differences and biochemical variations in peritumoral stroma may further our understanding of the biology of carcinoma development.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>Not applicable.</p

Age-related difference in susceptibility of ApcMin/+ mice towards the chemopreventive efficacy of dietary aspirin and curcumin
The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug aspirin and the spice curcumin retard adenoma formation when administered long-term to ApcMin/+ mice, a model of human familial adenomatous polyposis coli. Both agents interfere with cyclooxygenase activity. When aspirin is administered to ApcMin/+ mice only postweaning, but not before, it is inefficacious, while curcumin given postweaning is active. Here the hypothesis was tested that dietary aspirin (0.05%) or curcumin (0.2%) prevent or delay adenoma formation in offsprings when administered to ApcMin/+ mothers and up to the end of weaning, but not afterwards. Whereas curcumin was without effect when administered in this way, aspirin reduced numbers of intestinal adenomas by 21%. When aspirin given up to the end of weaning was combined with curcumin administered from the end of weaning for the rest of the animals' lifetime, intestinal adenoma numbers were reduced by 38%. The combination was not superior to intervention postweaning with curcumin alone. These results show that aspirin exerts chemopreventive activity in the ApcMin/+ mouse during tumour initiation/early promotion, while curcumin is efficacious when given at a later stage of carcinogenic progression. Thus, the results suggest that in this mouse model aspirin and curcumin act during different ‘windows’ of neoplastic development
