    Planificación y evaluación del Trabajo de Fin de Grado:el caso del Grado en Información y Documentación de la universidad Carlos III de Madrid

    In the framework of the European Higher Education Area, the Undergraduate Dissertation is a subject on the official curriculum for the bachelor's degrees that can be earned in Spanish universities, Carlos III University of Madrid among them. It consists of an individual dissertation in which students apply the knowledge, skills and competencies acquired throughout their 4-year courses to a problem specific to the discipline associated with the degree to which they aspire. Planning, conducting and evaluating the work involved in the dissertation call for ad hoc tools that must be designed to accurately appraise the command of specific competencies associated with the degree sought by the student. The present paper introduces three such tools developed for the Bachelor's Degree in Information and Documentation offered at Carlos III University since 2008-09: a guidance manual, a preview system and an evaluation rubric. The guidance manual provides students with clear and precise instructions on how to undertake their study. The preview system affords a consistent, clear procedure for all students and for suitable monitoring of their progress at specified intervals. The evaluation rubric is a consistent and objective marking tool for juries. The three enable students and staff to suitably monitor progress and for professors to consistently and objectively evaluate all students in accordance with the duly weighted categories into which the competencies associated with the bachelor's degree in Information and Documentation are grouped.El Trabajo Fin de Grado (TFG) es, en el marco del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior (EEES), y en particular en los estudios de Grado que oferta la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, una asignatura más dentro del plan de estudios. Consiste en la realización de un trabajo de carácter individual, en el que el alumno demuestra los conocimientos, habilidades y competencias adquiridos durante sus estudios a un problema específico del ámbito de la titulación. La planificación, desarrollo y evaluación de esta asignatura supone diseñar instrumentos ad hoc que permitan valorar adecuadamente la adquisición de las competencias específicas ligadas al título de Grado al que opta el alumno. A tal efecto, en este trabajo, se presentan tres herramientas concretas que se han elaborado para el título de Grado en Información y Documentación que se imparte en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid desde el curso 2008-09: un manual de orientación, un plan de avances y una rúbrica o matriz de evaluación. El primero de ellos, el manual de orientación, ofrece al estudiante una guía clara y precisa de cómo elaborar el trabajo. El segundo, el plan de avances, ha permitido desarrollar un procedimiento claro y unitario para todos los estudiantes y realizar un seguimiento adecuado de los avances de los alumnos con plazos temporales determinados. El tercero, la rúbrica o matriz de evaluación, ha facilitado una herramienta coherente y objetiva de calificación para los tribunales que los evalúan. Todas ellas permiten, tanto a los profesores como a los alumnos, realizar un seguimiento adecuado de los trabajos y una evaluación coherente y objetiva para todos ellos de las 16 competencias asociadas al TFG en el Grado en Información y Documentación con la correspondiente ponderación de sus indicadores

    Meat quality of rabbits reared with two different feeding strategies : with or without fresh alfalfa ad libitum

    The aim of this study was to evaluate production performance, carcass characteristics and nutritive value of meat of rabbits reared under the 2 prevailing feeding strategies in Uruguay. One week after weaning, 96 purebred V line rabbits were randomly distributed between 2 treatments: (T1) commercial pelleted food ad libitum and (T2) commercial pelleted food ad libitum plus fresh alfalfa ad libitum. Each treatment included 12 cages containing 4 individuals each (2 males and 2 females). Growth performance characteristics (live weight evolution, commercial food consumption and food/gain ratio) were evaluated. The consumption of alfalfa was not measured. Rabbits were slaughtered at a live weight of 2500 g and carcass characteristics were evaluated. Samples of meat and dissectible fat were analysed to determine intramuscular fat content at muscle L. dorsi, dissectible fat and intramuscular fat composition, minerals (Zn, Fe, Mg and Na), vitamin E and purines. Sensory evaluations were conducted to assess the effect of treatments on the consumer’s perception of differences and the existence of attributes determining preferences. Differences between treatments were significant for total commercial food intake (23356 vs. 20930 g/cage; P<0.001) and feed conversion ratio (3.82 vs. 3.41; P<0.01) for T1 and T2 respectively. No significant differences were found in average daily gain, age at slaughter and carcass characteristics. There were no significant differences in the intramuscular fat content. The fatty acid composition of dissectible and intramuscular fat was affected by the inclusion of alfalfa in the diet increasing the linolenic acid content (1.82 vs. 3.28% and 2.29 vs. 5.15% for T1 and T2 at intramuscular and dissectible fat, respectively; P<0.001), and improving the n-6/n-3 relationship (8.60 vs. 5.82 and 11.58 vs. 5.64 for T1 and T2 at intramuscular and dissectible fat, respectively; P<0.001). There were no significant differences in vitamin E, Fe or Zn content between treatments, but differences were significant in Mg (22.5 vs. 24.4 mg/100 g for T1 and T2; P<0.05) and Na (44.1 vs. 48.2 mg/100 g; P<0.05).     Non-Markovian polymer reaction kinetics

    Describing the kinetics of polymer reactions, such as the formation of loops and hairpins in nucleic acids or polypeptides, is complicated by the structural dynamics of their chains. Although both intramolecular reactions, such as cyclization, and intermolecular reactions have been studied extensively, both experimentally and theoretically, there is to date no exact explicit analytical treatment of transport-limited polymer reaction kinetics, even in the case of the simplest (Rouse) model of monomers connected by linear springs. We introduce a new analytical approach to calculate the mean reaction time of polymer reactions that encompasses the non-Markovian dynamics of monomer motion. This requires that the conformational statistics of the polymer at the very instant of reaction be determined, which provides, as a by-product, new information on the reaction path. We show that the typical reactive conformation of the polymer is more extended than the equilibrium conformation, which leads to reaction times significantly shorter than predicted by the existing classical Markovian theory.Comment: Main text (7 pages, 5 figures) + Supplemantary Information (13 pages, 2 figures

    Mid-infrared InAs/InAsSb superlattice nBn photodetector monolithically integrated onto silicon

    Mid-infrared (MIR) silicon photonics holds the potential for realizing next generation ultracompact spectroscopic systems for applications in gas sensing, defense, and medical diagnostics. The direct epitaxial growth of antimonide-based compound semiconductors on silicon provides a promising approach for extending the wavelength of silicon photonics to the longer infrared range. This paper reports on the fabrication of a high performance MIR photodetector directly grown onto silicon by molecular beam epitaxy. The device exhibited an extended cutoff wavelength at ∼5.5 μm and a dark current density of 1.4 × 10–2 A/cm2 under 100 mV reverse bias at 200 K. A responsivity of 0.88 A/W and a specific detectivity in the order of 1.5 × 1010 Jones was measured at 200 K under 100 mV reverse bias operation. These results were achieved through the development of an innovative structure which incorporates a type-II InAs/InAsSb superlattice-based barrier nBn photodetector grown on a GaSb-on-silicon buffer layer. The difficulties in growing GaSb directly on silicon were overcome using a novel growth procedure consisting of an efficient AlSb interfacial misfit array, a two-step growth temperature procedure and dislocation filters resulting in a low defect density, antiphase domain free GaSb epitaxial layer on silicon. This work demonstrates that complex superlattice-based MIR photodetectors can be directly integrated onto a Si platform, which provides a pathway toward the realization of new, high performance, large area focal plane arrays and mid-infrared integrated photonic circuits

    Efecto de la dieta de cerdos en crecimiento sobre el valor nutritivo y la aptitud tecnológica de la carne y grasa

    Se sometieron cerdos con peso medio inicial de 53 kg a tres tratamientos: T1) dieta testigo conteniendo suplementos proteicos de origen vegetal y animal, T2) dieta basada exclusivamente en suplementos proteicos de origen vegetal y T3) dieta testigo restringida al 90 % de la cantidad ofrecida al T1 más libre acceso a pasturas. Se determinaron parámetros de comportamiento productivo y características de la canal en planta de faena. Se determinaron contenido de grasa intramuscular del Longissimus dorsi, perfil lipídico de la grasa subcutánea e intramuscular, contenido de hierro, zinc, magnesio, sodio y vitamina E. Se determinó también el punto de fusión de la grasa dorsal como indicador de aptitud tecnológica para la elaboración de productos fermentados. Con grasa procedente de cada tratamiento se elaboraron salames que fueron evaluados sensorialmente. En los parámetros de calidad de canal evaluados no hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas. El acceso a pasturas determinó un incremento en el contenido de ácido linolénico y una mejora de la relación n6/n3 en la grasa subcutánea. No hubo diferencias significativas en el punto de fusión de la grasa. Las muestras de salame resultaron ser distintas, con un nivel de confianza del 95 % para los atributos textura e intención de compra

    Dietary regulation of VEGFb gene expression is related to its promoter DNA methylation levels

    Motivación: Recientemente se ha descrito la implicación del factor de crecimiento del endotelio vascular B (VEGFb) en la absorción de los ácidos grasos (AGs) en los tejidos y su relación con el desarrollo de diferentes enfermedades metabólicas tal como la obesidad y la diabetes tipo 2. El objetivo de este estudio es investigar el efecto de la composición de los AGs de la dieta en la regulación de la expresión génica del VEGFb en los tejidos adiposos de rata, y si este efecto está relacionado mediante modificación por metilación del DNA en el promotor del VEGFb. De esta forma la modificación de la dieta puede ser una nueva estrategia para modular la acumulación patológica de los lípidos en la obesidad o en la diabetes. Métodos: A cada grupo de ratas fue asignado una de tres diferentes dietas isoenergéticas, cada una con una concentración diferente de AGs saturados, mono y poliinsaturados (dieta de aceite de coco, aceite de oliva y de girasol). Los animales fueron alimentados durante un mes. Las muestras de tejido adiposo visceral (VAT) y subcutáneo (SAT) se tomaron inmediatamente para estudios de metilación y  expresión génica. También de estos tejidos se tomaron mediciones de la composición de los AGs de los triglicéridos y la acumulación total de los tejidos adiposos. Resultados: Ni los pesos de los animales ni de los depósitos adiposos ni la acumulación lípidica del tejido cambiaban con las dietas. La composición en AGs de ambos tejidos fue significativamente diferente en función de la dieta consumida(p &lt;0,0001 para todos los AGs estudiados). El nivel de expresión del gen VEGFb se correlaciona directamente con la acumulación de lípidos de cada tejido y con la composición de AGs del tejido. En ambos tejidos, los niveles de expresión génica del VEGFb y de metilación del promotor fueron diferentes con respecto a la dieta consumida, estando la expresión génica y los niveles de metilación del promotor del VEGFb inversamente correlacionados. Los valores más altos de expresión génica, y los más bajos de metilación del promotor, se encontraron en las ratas alimentadas con la dieta rica en aceite de coco. Conclusiones: La expresión del gen Vegfb en el tejido adiposo se asocia con el aumento en la acumulación de grasa. El estudio presentado muestra que la expresión génica del Vegfb está regulada por los AGs de la dieta, y esta regulación está relacionada con el nivel de metilación de la región promotora del Vegfb

    Effectiveness of an mHealth intervention combining a smartphone app and smart band on body composition in an overweight and obese population: Randomized controlled trial (EVIDENT 3 study)

    Background: Mobile health (mHealth) is currently among the supporting elements that may contribute to an improvement in health markers by helping people adopt healthier lifestyles. mHealth interventions have been widely reported to achieve greater weight loss than other approaches, but their effect on body composition remains unclear. Objective: This study aimed to assess the short-term (3 months) effectiveness of a mobile app and a smart band for losing weight and changing body composition in sedentary Spanish adults who are overweight or obese. Methods: A randomized controlled, multicenter clinical trial was conducted involving the participation of 440 subjects from primary care centers, with 231 subjects in the intervention group (IG; counselling with smartphone app and smart band) and 209 in the control group (CG; counselling only). Both groups were counselled about healthy diet and physical activity. For the 3-month intervention period, the IG was trained to use a smartphone app that involved self-monitoring and tailored feedback, as well as a smart band that recorded daily physical activity (Mi Band 2, Xiaomi). Body composition was measured using the InBody 230 bioimpedance device (InBody Co., Ltd), and physical activity was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Results: The mHealth intervention produced a greater loss of body weight (–1.97 kg, 95% CI –2.39 to –1.54) relative to standard counselling at 3 months (–1.13 kg, 95% CI –1.56 to –0.69). Comparing groups, the IG achieved a weight loss of 0.84 kg more than the CG at 3 months. The IG showed a decrease in body fat mass (BFM; –1.84 kg, 95% CI –2.48 to –1.20), percentage of body fat (PBF; –1.22%, 95% CI –1.82% to 0.62%), and BMI (–0.77 kg/m2, 95% CI –0.96 to 0.57). No significant changes were observed in any of these parameters in men; among women, there was a significant decrease in BMI in the IG compared with the CG. When subjects were grouped according to baseline BMI, the overweight group experienced a change in BFM of –1.18 kg (95% CI –2.30 to –0.06) and BMI of –0.47 kg/m2 (95% CI –0.80 to –0.13), whereas the obese group only experienced a change in BMI of –0.53 kg/m2 (95% CI –0.86 to –0.19). When the data were analyzed according to physical activity, the moderate-vigorous physical activity group showed significant changes in BFM of –1.03 kg (95% CI –1.74 to –0.33), PBF of –0.76% (95% CI –1.32% to –0.20%), and BMI of –0.5 kg/m2 (95% CI –0.83 to –0.19). Conclusions: The results from this multicenter, randomized controlled clinical trial study show that compared with standard counselling alone, adding a self-reported app and a smart band obtained beneficial results in terms of weight loss and a reduction in BFM and PBF in female subjects with a BMI less than 30 kg/m2 and a moderate-vigorous physical activity level. Nevertheless, further studies are needed to ensure that this profile benefits more than others from this intervention and to investigate modifications of this intervention to achieve a global effect

    Role of Physical Activity and Fitness in the Characterization and Prognosis of the Metabolically Healthy Obesity Phenotype: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    The aims of the present article are to systematically review and meta-analyze the existing evidence on: 1) differences in physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and muscular strength (MST) between metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO); and 2) the prognosis of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality/morbidity in MHO individuals, compared with the best scenario possible, i.e., metabolically healthy normal-weight (MHNW), after adjusting for PA, SB, CRF or MST. Our systematic review identified 67 cross-sectional studies to address aim 1, and 11 longitudinal studies to address aim 2. The major findings and conclusions from the current meta-analysis are: 1) MHO individuals are more active, spend less time in SB, and have a higher level of CRF (yet no differences in MST) than MUO individuals, suggesting that their healthier metabolic profile could be at least partially due to these healthier lifestyle factors and attributes. 2) The meta-analysis of cohort studies which accounted for PA (N = 10 unique cohorts, 100% scored as high-quality) support the notion that MHO individuals have a 24-33% higher risk of all-cause mortality and CVD mortality/morbidity compared to MHNW individuals. This risk was borderline significant/non-significant, independent of the length of the follow-up and lower than that reported in previous meta-analyses in this topic including all type of studies, which could be indicating a modest reduction in the risk estimates as a consequence of accounting for PA. 3) Only one study has examined the role of CRF in the prognosis of MHO individuals. This study suggests that the differences in the risk of all-cause mortality and CVD mortality/morbidity between MHO and MHNW are largely explained by differences in CRF between these two phenotypes
