Food competition in a semi-free-ranging Cebus apella group
The competitive regime faced by individuals is fundamental to modelling the evolution of social organisation. In this paper, we assess the relative importance of contest and scramble food competition on the social dynamics of a provisioned semifree-ranging Cebus apella group (n= 18). Individuals competed directly for provisioned and clumped foods. Effects of indirect competition were apparent with individuals foraging in different areas and with increased group dispersion during periods of low food abundance. We suggest that both forms of competition can act simultaneously and to some extent synergistically in their influence on social dynamics; the combination of social and ecological opportunities for competition and how those opportunities are exploited both influence the nature of the relationships within social groups of primates as well as underlying the evolved social structure
Interethnic marriage of Japanese-Brazilians associated with less healthy food habits and worse cardiometabolic profile
CONCLUSÃO: Casamento interétnico associa-se a hábitos alimentares menos saudáveis e pior perfil de risco cardiometabólico.OBJECTIVE: Interethnic marriage between nikkey Brazilians and non-nikkey Brazilians may favor the westernization of diet. Dietary consumption, clinical data and frequencies of metabolic diseases were compared in a Japanese-Brazilian population, with intraethnic or interethnic marriage. METHODS: T test, Mann-Whitney, chi-square and Person coefficient were used. RESULTS: Among 1009 Japanese-Brazilians there were 18.9% of interethnic marriage, being more frequent among nikkey men. These showed higher means of BMI, waist, blood pressure, glycemia and triglyceridemia than women. Overall frequencies of obesity, hypertrigliceridemia and metabolic syndrome were 47.7%, 68.1% and 45.2%, being higher in interethnic than intraethnic marriage. Comparing individuals with interethnic marriages, hypertriglyceridemia was more common among men while low-HDL among women. Energy, fat, groups of alcohol, sweets and oils were higher in interethnic marriage. Individuals with intraethnic marriage consumed more carbohydrate, proteins, fibers, vitamins, minerals, vegetables, fruits/juice, cereals and missoshiru. Comparing individuals with interethnic marriages, nikkey men showed a more westernized dietary pattern than nikkey women. CONCLUSION: Interethnic marriage was associated with less healthy food habits and worse cardiometabolic profile.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP

Secondary metabolites from the sponges Aplysina fistularis and Dysidea sp. and the antituberculosis activity of 11-ketofistularin-3
The present investigation reports the isolation of aeroplysinin-2, 2-(3,5-dibromo-4-methoxyphenyl)-N,N,N-trimethyletanamonium, 7,9-dibromo-10-hydroxy-8-methoxy-1-oxa-2-azaspiro[4.5]deca-2,6,8-trien-3-carboxylic acid and its methyl ester, 11-oxoaerothionin, aerothionin, 11-keto-12-hydroxyaerothionin, 11-ketofistularin-3 and fistularin-3 from Aplysina fistularis, as well as of furodysinin lactone and 9α,11α-epoxicholest-7-en-3β,5α,6α,10-tetrol-6-acetate from Dysidea sp. Although the extracts of both sponges displayed antituberculosis activity, only 11-ketofistularin-3 isolated from A. fistularis displayed antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H34Rv, with MIC at 16 μg/mL and SI of 40, a result that reinforce that fistularin-3 derivatives are interesting leads for the development of antituberculosis drugs.American Society of Pharmacognosy FoundationFundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)BIOTA/FAPESP - BIOprospecTAUSP - PIBIC/CNPqFAPES
Factors associated with fruit and vegetable intake in Japanese-Brazilians
The determination of factors associated with fruit and vegetable intake is an important tool for the development of effective intervention programs aimed at increasing the consumption of these foods. The objective of the present cross-sectional study was to identify the factors associated with the adequate consumption of fruit and vegetables (> 400g/day) among 581 adult Japanese-Brazilians, 1st and 2nd generations of immigrants, living in Bauru, SP, Brazil. Food consumption was estimated using three 24-hour recalls. On adjusted logistic regression models, higher meal frequencies were associated with a better chance of adequate daily intake of fruit and vegetables [OR (95% CI)]: [1.31 (1.05, 1.63)]. Nevertheless, individuals at the highest tertile of saturated fat intake were less likely to have adequate daily intake of these foods [0.35 (0.21, 0.60)]. A trend toward adequate intake of fruit and vegetables was found among older participants. These results suggest that more intensive intervention programs are needed among young individuals with higher saturated fat intake. Moreover, higher meal frequency might promote better adherence to the goals of daily fruit and vegetable intake.
Nutritional status of Japanese-Brazilian subjects: comparison across gender and generation
The present paper describes a nutritional survey carried out among Japanese-Brazilian subjects living in Bauru, south-eastern Brazil. Data were from a cross-sectional population-based study of 1283 first-generation Japanese-Brazilian subjects (Japan-born; 127 men and 121 women) and second-generation Japanese-Brazilian subjects (Brazil-born; 456 men and 573 women) aged 30-90 years. Anthropometric measurements and % body fat were measured and BMI and waist:hip ratio calculated. Dietary assessment was performed using a validated food-frequency questionnaire. A considerable proportion of men (51 %) and women (47 %) had excess weight (BMI>24.9 kg/m(2)). A greater waist circumference in men and women (age-adjusted by covariance analysis) was observed among Brazil-born participants. in general, only 10 % of the participants reported current practice of sports or other vigorous physical activity. Age-adjusted mean energy intakes and % energy from macronutrients were found to be similar across generations. the age-adjusted mean daily % energy intake from fat were similar across generations: among Japan-born participants, they were 31.5 (95 % CI 30.6, 32.4) % for men and 32.6 (95 % CI 31.7, 33.5) % for women. the respective figures for Brazil-born subjects were 32.1 (95 % CI 31.6, 32.6) % and 33.2 (95 % CI 32.7, 33.5) %. These values are quite different from the usual intakes reported in Japan during the last decades (about 25 %). Taking into account the traditional Japanese diet, a high energy density diet and a sedentary lifestyle may be implicated in the high prevalence of central obesity and metabolic syndrome observed among Japanese-Brazilian subjects across gender and generations.Univ São Paulo, Sch Publ Hlth, Dept Nutr, BR-01246904 São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Prevent Med, BR-04023062 São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Prevent Med, BR-04023062 São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc
Observational Bounds on Cosmic Doomsday
Recently it was found, in a broad class of models, that the dark energy
density may change its sign during the evolution of the universe. This may lead
to a global collapse of the universe within the time t_c ~ 10^{10}-10^{11}
years. Our goal is to find what bounds on the future lifetime of the universe
can be placed by the next generation of cosmological observations. As an
example, we investigate the simplest model of dark energy with a linear
potential V(\phi) =V_0(1+\alpha\phi). This model can describe the present stage
of acceleration of the universe if \alpha is small enough. However, eventually
the field \phi rolls down, V(\phi) becomes negative, and the universe
collapses. The existing observational data indicate that the universe described
by this model will collapse not earlier than t_c > 10 billion years from the
present moment. We show that the data from SNAP and Planck satellites may
extend the bound on the "doomsday" time to t_c > 40 billion years at the 95%
confidence level.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, revtex
Autoimmune hepatitis in 828 Brazilian children and adolescents: clinical and laboratory findings, histological profile, treatments, and outcomes
In this large clinical series of Brazilian children and adolescents, autoimmunehepatitis-1 was more frequent, and patients with autoimmune hepatitis-2 exhibited higherdisease remission rates with earlier response to treatment. Patients with autoimmune hepatitis-1 had a higher risk of death.sentation, laboratory findings, histological profile, treatments, and outcomes of children andadolescents with autoimmune hepatitis. Methods: The medical records of 828 children and adolescents with autoimmune hepatitiswere reviewed. A questionnaire was used to collect anonymous data on clinical presentation, biochemical and histological findings, and treatments. Results: Of all patients, 89.6% had autoimmune hepatitis-1 and 10.4% had autoimmunehepatitis-2. The female sex was predominant in both groups. The median age at symptomonset was 111.5 (6; 210) and 53.5 (8; 165) months in the patients with autoimmune hepatitis1 and autoimmune hepatitis-2, respectively. Acute clinical onset was observed in 56.1% and58.8% and insidious symptoms in 43.9% and 41.2% of the patients with autoimmune hepatitis-1and autoimmune hepatitis-2, respectively. The risk of hepatic failure was 1.6-fold higher forautoimmune hepatitis-2. Fulminant hepatic failure occurred in 3.6% and 10.6% of the patientswith autoimmune hepatitis-1 and autoimmune hepatitis-2, respectively; the risk was 3.1-foldhigher for autoimmune hepatitis-2. The gamma globulin and immunoglobulin G levels were sig-nificantly higher in autoimmune hepatitis-1, while the immunoglobulin A and C3 levels werelower in autoimmune hepatitis-2. Cirrhosis was observed in 22.4% of the patients; biochem-ical remission was achieved in 76.2%. The actuarial survival rate was 93.0%. A total of 4.6%underwent liver transplantation, and 6.9% died (autoimmune hepatitis-1: 7.5%; autoimmunehepatitis-2: 2.4%).Conclusions: In this large clinical series of Brazilian children and adolescents, autoimmunehepatitis-1 was more frequent, and patients with autoimmune hepatitis-2 exhibited higherdisease remission rates with earlier response to treatment.
