Simulations of Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction in Laue Geometry

A method of computer simulation of Time-Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXD) in asymmetric Laue (transmission) geometry with an arbitrary propagating strain perpendicular to the crystal surface is presented. We present two case studies for possible strain generation by short-pulse laser irradiation: (i) a thermoelastic-like analytic model; (ii) a numerical model including effects of electron-hole diffusion, Auger recombination, deformation potential and thermal diffusion. A comparison with recent experimental results is also presented.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure

Logarithmic corrections to gap scaling in random-bond Ising strips

Numerical results for the first gap of the Lyapunov spectrum of the self-dual random-bond Ising model on strips are analysed. It is shown that finite-width corrections can be fitted very well by an inverse logarithmic form, predicted to hold when the Hamiltonian contains a marginal operator.Comment: LaTeX code with Institute of Physics macros for 7 pages, plus 2 Postscript figures; to appear in Journal of Physics A (Letter to the Editor

    Short small-polaron lifetime in the mixed-valence perovskite Cs2_2Au2_2I6_6 from high-pressure pump-probe experiments

We study the ultrafast phonon response of mixed-valence perovskite Cs2_2Au2_2I6_6 using pump-probe spectroscopy under high-pressure in a diamond anvil cell. We observed a remarkable softening and broadening of the Au - I stretching phonon mode with both applied pressure and photoexcitation. Using a double-pump scheme we measured a lifetime of the charge transfer excitation into single valence Au2+^{2+} of less than 4 ps, which is an indication of the local character of the Au2+^{2+} excitation. Furthermore, the strong similarity between the pressure and fluence dependence of the phonon softening shows that the inter-valence charge transfer plays an important role in the structural transition.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

On weak vs. strong universality in the two-dimensional random-bond Ising ferromagnet

We address the issue of universality in two-dimensional disordered Ising systems, by considering long, finite-width strips of ferromagnetic Ising spins with randomly distributed couplings. We calculate the free energy and spin-spin correlation functions (from which averaged correlation lengths, ξave\xi^{ave}, are computed) by transfer-matrix methods. An {\it ansatz} for the size-dependence of logarithmic corrections to ξave\xi^{ave} is proposed. Data for both random-bond and site-diluted systems show that pure system behaviour (with ν=1\nu=1) is recovered if these corrections are incorporated, discarding the weak--universality scenario.Comment: RevTeX code, 4 pages plus 2 Postscript figures; to appear in Physical Review B Rapid Communication
