Prevalence, intensity, longevity, and persistence of Anisakis sp. larvae and Lacistorhynchus tenuis metacestodes in San Francisco striped bass

    Get PDF
Thirteen hundred and seventy-three striped bass, Marone saxatilis, were collected from the San Francisco Bay-Delta area to correlate host diet with parasitic infections and to determine the prevalence, intensity, longevity, and persistence of larval Anisakis sp. nematodes and the metacestode Lacistorhynchus tenuis. There is an increase in the prevalence and intensity of Anisakis sp. and in the intensity of L. tenuis with increase of age of the host. These increases are probably related to the diet and the persistence of tbe parasites. The infections of both species are overdispersed. San Francisco Bay striped bass are an incompatible host for both species of parasites. Degenerated Anisakis sp. will remain in lhe host for at least 8 months and L. tenuis metacestodes for 22 months. The occurrence of several other species of parasites and a tumor are also reported. (PDF file contains 10 pages.

    Arriving at Employment

The Detroit Future City (DFC) strategic framework of 2012 proposes that industrial redevelopment in the Mt. Elliott and Southwest industrial employment districts will provide jobs for the greatest number of unemployed and underemployed residents of Detroit, Michigan. The Detroit Economic Growth Association has used the industrial employment district concept as the basis of an ongoing planning process in the Mt. Elliott area. The existing industrial and freight infrastructure paired with investment from non-profit groups in the Mt. Elliott and Southwest districts makes them prime locations for additional industrial investment. The goal of our study is to evaluate whether new manufacturing jobs in these areas will be accessible to working-age Detroiters who do not have access to a personal vehicle. Using geographic information system (GIS) software, we estimated the number of Detroiters who can reach either industrial district via bus service or walking within an hour of a typical industrial shift.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/120305/1/Auerbach-Reilly-Sun_ArrivingAtEmployment.pd

The plant communities of the Andover Game Reserve, South Africa

Floristic characteristics of the Andover Game Reserve (AGR) were surveyed using an area-based survey technique and classified according to the data recorded from 88 relevés, using the PHYTOTAB-PC software package. Three plant communities, of which two each contain two variants, were described and mapped. The plant communities and their causative environmental factors were validated through detrended- and canonical correspondence multivariate analyses. The plant communities of the AGR were found to typify the floristics associated with the catenal sequences located in undulating areas on granite. Broad-leaved savanna is located at the crest and upper mid-slopes while fine-leaved savanna occurs along the footslopes of the AGR. Seeplines, a characteristic occurrence along catenas, are found at the transitional zone between the upper broad- and lower fine-leaved savanna plant communities. This study forms the basis for the compilation of a revised ecological management plan for the Andover Game Reserve

Introduction There are 7-8 million individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities living in the US. • 91,795 of this population lives in Vermont • Historically marginalized and isolated community • Socioeconomic, health-related, and emotional burden • Public health-related disparity Champlain Community Services (CCS): non-profit service provider and coordinator for 86 persons with intellectual disabilities in Northwestern Vermont Objectives: • Develop and apply measures to better understand and evaluate quality of life in the population CCS serves. • Recommend improvement to CCS data collection and evaluation methods. • Provide a basis for future recommendations to CCS services that are aligned to the needs of consumers.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1275/thumbnail.jp

Potential for energy production from farm wastes using anaerobic digestion in the UK : An economic comparison of different size plants

    Get PDF
Anaerobic digestion (AD) plants enable renewable fuel, heat, and electricity production, with their efficiency and capital cost strongly dependent on their installed capacity. In this work, the technical and economic feasibility of different scale AD combined heat and power (CHP) plants was analyzed. Process configurations involving the use of waste produced in different farms as feedstock for a centralized AD plant were assessed too. The results show that the levelized cost of electricity are lower for large-scale plants due to the use of more efficient conversion devices and their lower capital cost per unit of electricity produced. The levelized cost of electricity was estimated to be 4.3 p/kWhe for AD plants processing the waste of 125 dairy cow sized herds compared to 1.9 p/kWhe for AD plants processing waste of 1000 dairy cow sized herds. The techno-economic feasibility of the installation of CO2 capture units in centralized AD-CHP plants was also undertaken. The conducted research demonstrated that negative CO2 emission AD power generation plants could be economically viable with currently paid feed-in tariffs in the UK

The development of metaphorical language comprehension in typical development and in Williams syndrome

    Get PDF
The domain of figurative language comprehension was used to probe the developmental relation between language and cognition in typically developing individuals and individuals with Williams syndrome. Extending the work of Vosniadou and Ortony, the emergence of nonliteral similarity and category knowledge was investigated in 117 typically developing children between 4 and 12 years of age, 19 typically developing adults, 15 children with Williams syndrome between 5 and 12 years of age, and 8 adults with Williams syndrome. Participants were required to complete similarity and categorization statements by selecting one of two words (e.g., either “The sun is like ___” or “The sun is the same kind of thing as ___”) with word pairs formed from items that were literally, perceptually, or functionally similar to the target word or else anomalous (e.g., moon, orange, oven, or chair, respectively). Results indicated that individuals with Williams syndrome may access different, less abstract knowledge in figurative language comparisons despite the relatively strong verbal abilities found in this disorder
