Amygdala activity related to perceived social support

Perceived social support enhances well-being and prevents stress-related ill-being. A recent structural neuroimaging study reported that the amygdala volume is positively associated with perceived social support. However, it remains unknown how neural activity in this region and functional connectivity (FC) between this and other regions are related to perceived social support. To investigate these issues, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed to analyze the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF). Perceived social support was evaluated using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Lower fALFF values in the bilateral amygdalae were associated with higher MSPSS scores. Additionally, stronger FC between the left amygdala and right orbitofrontal cortex and between the left amygdala and bilateral precuneus were associated with higher MSPSS scores. The present findings suggest that reduced amygdala activity and heightened connectivity between the amygdala and other regions underlie perceived social support and its positive functions

From 1994 to 1999,we conducted a phase I/II clinical trial for patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)using carbon ion beams alone, demonstrating optimal doses of 90.0GyE in 18 fractions over 6 weeks(Protocol#9701),which led to more than 95%local control with minimal pulmonary damage. In the present study, the total dose was fixed at 72.0GyE in 9 fractions over 3 weeks(Protocol#9802),and at 52.8GyE for stage IA and 60.0GyE for stage IA and 60.0GyE for stage IB in 4 fractions in 1 week(Protocol#0001). Following this schedule, we conducted a phase II clinical trial for stage I NSCLC from 1999 to 2003. We also conducted a phase I/II single fractionation clinical trial(Protocol#0201) as a dose escalation study. The total dose was initially 28.0GyE in 2003, and it was increased to 46.0GyE in 2008. This article describes the intermediate steps. Most targets were irradiated from four oblique directions. A respiratory-gated irradiation system was used for all sessions. Local control and survival were by the Kaplan-Meier method. statistical testing, the Log-rank test was used. The local control rate for all patients(#9802 and #0001) was 91.5%,and for those with T1 and T2 tumors was 96.3% and 84.7%,respectively. while there was significant difference(P=0.0156) in the tumor control rate between patients with T1 and T2 tumors, there was no significant difference(P=0.1516) between squamous cell carcinomas and non-squamous cell carcinomas. The 5-year cause-specific survival rate was 67.0% (IA:84.4,IB:43.7), and overall survival was 45.3%(IA:53.9,IB:34.2). No adverse effects greater than grade 2 ocurred in the lungs. In a single fractionation trial, the 3-year local control rate for 117 patients was 81.9%, and the control rates for patients with T1 and T2 tumors were 84.7% and 78.0%,respectively. No adverse effects greater than grade 2 ocurred in the lungs. Carbon beam radiotherapy, an excellent new modality in terms of high QOL and ADL,was proven to be a valid alternative to surgery for stage I cancer, especially for elderly and inoperable patients

Complication rate, functional outcomes, and risk factors associated with carbon ion radiotherapy for patients with unresectable pelvic bone sarcoma

BackgroundTo the authors\u27 knowledge, carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) is one of the few curative treatments for unresectable pelvic bone sarcoma. The current study investigated the complications, functional outcomes, and risk factors of CIRT.MethodsOf 112 patients who were treated with CIRT for unresectable pelvic bone sarcoma, the authors enrolled 29 patients who were without local disease recurrence or distant metastasis. The mean follow‐up was 93 months. Complications, functional outcomes, and quality of life scores were assessed. Risk factors were analyzed, including the dose‐volume histogram of the femoral head.ResultsFemoral head necrosis occurred in approximately 37% of patients, pelvic fractures were reported in 48% of patients, and neurological deficits were noted in 52% of patients. Femoral head necrosis was found to be significantly more prevalent among patients with periacetabular tumors (P = .018). The dose‐volume histogram of the femoral head indicated tolerable volume percentages of the femoral head to be 50 years and those with periacetabular tumors were found to have significantly lower Toronto Extremity Salvage Scores.ConclusionsFemoral head necrosis, pelvic fracture, and nerve damage are common complications with the use of CIRT for pelvic bone sarcoma. To prevent femoral head necrosis, the radiation dose to the femoral head should be kept below the estimated tolerance curve presented in the current study. The functional outcome is nearly equivalent to that of surgery. CIRT may be a promising alternative to surgery for patients with unresectable pelvic bone sarcoma

Exploring a best vegetation index to explain the seasonal variation of a forest photosynthesis using a hyper-spectral camera equipped with liquid crystal tunable filter

Liquid crystal tunable filter (LCTF) can change the transmissible wavelength by changing the applied voltage to the filter, which enables the drastic increase in the observable wavelength resolution in a small size system and is considered to be a powerful tool for the spectral earth observation from flying units or microsatellites. However, there is limited knowledge about its season-long application for the vegetation monitoring and the prediction of the ecosystem photosynthetic capacity. We compared the seasonal variation of spectral reflectance obtained by a LCTF camera with that obtained by a popular spectral radiometer in a cool-temperate young larch plantation in northern Hokkaido, Japan. Then we tried to find the best normalized difference spectral index (NDSI) to explain the seasonal variation of the ecosystem photosynthetic capacity using all pairs of two reflectances observed in the range of wavelength between 500 and 770 nm with 10-nm intervals (28 wavelength bands) by the LCTF. The best NDSI among all combinations (28x27) of two reflectances was NDSI[770, 720] for the maximum gross primary production at light saturation and NDSI[530, 600] for the initial slope of the light-response curve, which reflect the red edge shift owing to the change in the chlorophyll content and relative strength of the light absorbance in the visible red wavelength region compared with that in the green wavelength region, respectively. Predicted daily gross primary production of the plantation using these NDSI agreed well with the observed values. NDSI[530, 600] was better to distinguish each vegetation type of the studied plantation
