The influence of turbulence on the structure and propagation of enclosed flames
Although it has long been established that burning rates can be
appreciably increased by turbulence, the actual extent of this increase and
the precise mechanism involved are still far from clear. The object of the
present research was to examine the effects of turbulence on burning
velocity and on the physical structure of the flame surface under flow
conditions similar to those experienced in turbojet afterburner systems
Induction motor control system with voltage controlled oscillator circuit
A voltage controlled oscillator circuit is reported in which there are employed first and second differential amplifiers. The first differential amplifier, being employed as an integrator, develops equal and opposite slopes proportional to an input voltage, and the second differential amplifier functions as a comparator to detect equal amplitude positive and negative selected limits and provides switching signals which gate a transistor switch. The integrating differential amplifier is switched between charging and discharging modes to provide an output of the first differential amplifier which upon the application of wave shaping provides a substantially sinusoidal output signal. A two phased version with a second integrator provides a second 90 deg phase shifted output for induction motor control
5-micron photometry of late-type dwarfs
We present narrowband-M photometry of nine low-mass dwarfs with spectral
types ranging from M2.5 to L0.5. Combining the (L'-M') colours derived from our
observations with data from the literature, we find colours consistent with a
Rayleigh-Jeans flux distribution for spectral types earlier than M5, but
enhanced F_3.8/F_4.7 flux ratios (negative (L'-M') colours) at later spectral
types. This probably reflects increased absorption at M' due to the CO
fundamental band. We compare our results against recent model predictions and
briefly discuss the implications.Comment: accepted for the Astronomical Journa
Using bijective maps to improve free energy estimates
We derive a fluctuation theorem for generalized work distributions, related
to bijective mappings of the phase spaces of two physical systems, and use it
to derive a two-sided constraint maximum likelihood estimator of their free
energy difference which uses samples from the equilibrium configurations of
both systems. As an application, we evaluate the chemical potential of a dense
Lennard-Jones fluid and study the construction and performance of suitable

A multifrequency evaluation of active and passive microwave sensors for oil spill detection and assessment
An evaluation is given of how active and passive microwave sensors can best be used in oil spill detection and assessment. Radar backscatter curves taken over oil spills are presented and their effect on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are discussed. Plots of microwave radiometric brightness variations over oil spills are presented and discussed. Recommendations as to how to select the best combination of frequency, viewing angle, and sensor type for evaluation of various aspects of oil spills are also discussed

From Wires to Cables: Attempted Synthesis of 1,3,5-Trifluorenylcyclohexane as a Platform for Molecular Cables
Multiple molecular wires braided together in a single assembly, termed as molecular cable, are promising next-generation materials for effective long-range charge transport. As an example of the platform for constructing molecular cables, 1,3,5-trifluorenylcyclohexane (TFC) and its difluorenyl analogues (DFCs) were systematically investigated both experimentally (X-ray crystallography) and theoretically (DFT calculations). Although the syntheses of DFCs were successfully achieved, the synthesis of TFC, which involved a similar intramolecular Friedel–Crafts cyclization as the last step, was unsuccessful. An exhaustive study of the conformational landscape of cyclohexane ring of TFC and DFCs revealed that TFC is a moderately strained molecule (∼17 kcal/mol), and computational studies of the reaction profile show that this steric strain, present in the transition state, is responsible for the unusually high (∼5 years) reaction half-life. A successful synthesis of TFC will require that the steric strain is introduced in multiple steps, and such alternative strategies are being currently explored

Dynamical preparation of EPR entanglement in two-well Bose-Einstein condensates
We propose to generate Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement between
groups of atoms in a two-well Bose-Einstein condensate using a dynamical
process similar to that employed in quantum optics. The local nonlinear S-wave
scattering interaction has the effect of creating a spin squeezing at each
well, while the tunneling, analogous to a beam splitter in optics, introduces
an interference between these fields that results in an inter-well
entanglement. We consider two internal modes at each well, so that the
entanglement can be detected by measuring a reduction in the variances of the
sums of local Schwinger spin observables. As is typical of continuous variable
(CV) entanglement, the entanglement is predicted to increase with atom number,
and becomes sufficiently strong at higher numbers of atoms that the EPR paradox
and steering non-locality can be realized. The entanglement is predicted using
an analytical approach and, for larger atom numbers, stochastic simulations
based on truncated Wigner function. We find generally that strong tunnelling is
favourable, and that entanglement persists and is even enhanced in the presence
of realistic nonlinear losses.Comment: 15 pages, 19 figure
