Novel estimation of gear selectivity using a concurrent mass mortality event: A case study using red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) in the northern Gulf of Mexico
Fishery-independent surveys are commonly used in modern stock assessment models to inform trends in abundance and these surveys may become more important when there are gaps in other data sources, such as harvest data. As a result of the federal harvest moratorium in the late 1980’s, Gulf of Mexico red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) remains a data-limited species with little known about its post-escapement (6 – 46-year-old fish) abundance in offshore waters, which encompasses the spawning biomass of the stock. Historically, age and growth estimates were derived from purse seine collections, which was the industry\u27s preferred harvest technique. Recently, the addition of fishery-independent surveys, i.e. bottom longline surveys, sought to provide a potential alternative to purse seines; however, their efficacy in sampling the breadth of the offshore red drum population has not been widely evaluated. Here, we compared the age composition and selectivity of red drum collected with purse seine and bottom long line in offshore coastal waters of Mississippi and Alabama. Red drum collected in the purse seines ranged from 561 to 1018 mm total length (2–26 years old) and 770 − 1090 mm (2–36 years old) in bottom longlines. Additionally, an opportunistic sampling of red drum from a large fish kill in 2015 was used to estimate selectivity of red drum sampled by purse seine and bottom long line. Red drum selectivity generally decreased with age for the purse seine, while there was an increase in selectivity for the bottom long line survey. This novel approach using a mass mortality event to derive gear selectivity may allow fisheries scientists to refine selectivity measurements in stock assessments. Characterization of selectivity for different survey gears will allow for a more informed comparison of historic and current surveys when gear type effects change
Lower Limb Graduated Compression Garments Modulate Autonomic Nervous System and Improve Post-Training Recovery Measured via Heart Rate Variability
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(7): 1794-1806, 2020. Prior studies have examined the benefits of graduated compression garments (GCG) with regards to diverse exercise regimens; however, the relationship between GCG and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) has not been fully explored. The aim of this study was to examine Heart Rate Variability (HRV) trends—a proxy for ANS modulation—in response to donning GCG during a progressive overload training regimen designed to induce overtraining. Ten college-aged male novice runners were recruited for the 8-week crossover study. After three weeks of monitored free living, participants were randomized and blinded to an intervention group that donned a lower-body GCG during a two-week exercise regimen or a control group that donned a visually identical but non-compressive sham during identical training. No significant difference in HRV was calculated by the natural logarithm of the root mean square of successive RR-interval differences (lnRMSSD) between the 3-week free-living baseline and GCG intervention periods (P = 0.3040). The mean lnRMSSD was greater during the free-living phase and GCG intervention compared to the sham placebo (P \u3c 0.001 and \u3c0.001 respectively). With regard to the daily fluctuation of lnRMSSD, no significant differences were found between free-living and intervention (P = 1.000). Conversely, the intervention period demonstrated reduced daily fluctuation of lnRMSSD relative to the Sham placebo group (P = 0.010). These novel findings posit that post training use of a commercially available graduated compression garment in novice runners may be effective in counteracting some deleterious effects from overtraining while attenuating its effects on vagally-mediated HRV
Association between guidelines and medical practitioners' perception of best management for patients attending with an apparently uncomplicated acute sire throat: a cross-sectional survey in five countries
Objective To investigate the relationship between guidelines and the medical practitioners' perception of optimal care for patients attending with an apparently uncomplicated acute sore throat in five countries (Australia, Germany, Sweden, UK and USA).
Design International cross-sectional survey.
Setting Primary healthcare (PHC).
Participants Medical practitioners working in PHC.
Main outcome measures ORs for: (A) perception of throat swabs as important, (B) perception of blood tests (C reactive protein, B-ESR and B-leucocytes) as important and (C) antibiotic prescriptions if no pathogenic bacteria isolated on throat swab.
Results Guidelines differed significantly; those recommending throat swabs (Sweden and USA) were associated with practitioners perceiving them as important. The UK guideline was the only one actively discouraging the use of throat swabs. Hence, compared with the USA (reference), a throat swab showing no pathogenic bacteria increased the probability of antibiotic prescribing in the UK with OR 3.2 (95% CI 1.7 to 6.1) for adults, whereas it reduced the probability in Sweden for adults OR 0.35 (95% CI 0.13 to 0.96) and children 0.19 (95% CI 0.069 to 0.50).
Conclusions The differences between practitioners' perceptions of best management were associated with their guidelines. It remains unclear if guidelines influenced medical practitioners' perception or if guidelines merely reflect the consensus of current practice. A larger effort should be made to reach an international consensus in high-income countries about the best management of patients attending for an uncomplicated acute sore throat

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Group A <it>Streptococcus </it>(GAS) is a human-specific pathogen responsible for a number of diseases characterized by a wide range of clinical manifestations. During host colonization GAS-cell aggregates or microcolonies are observed in tissues. GAS biofilm, which is an <it>in vitro </it>equivalent of tissue microcolony, has only recently been studied and little is known about the specific surface determinants that aid biofilm formation. In this study, we demonstrate that surface-associated streptococcal collagen-like protein-1 (Scl1) plays an important role in GAS biofilm formation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Biofilm formation by M1-, M3-, M28-, and M41-type GAS strains, representing an intraspecies breadth, were analyzed spectrophotometrically following crystal violet staining, and characterized using confocal and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The M41-type strain formed the most robust biofilm under static conditions, followed by M28- and M1-type strains, while the M3-type strains analyzed here did not form biofilm under the same experimental conditions. Differences in architecture and cell-surface morphology were observed in biofilms formed by the M1- and M41-wild-type strains, accompanied by varying amounts of deposited extracellular matrix and differences in cell-to-cell junctions within each biofilm. Importantly, all Scl1-negative mutants examined showed significantly decreased ability to form biofilm <it>in vitro</it>. Furthermore, the Scl1 protein expressed on the surface of a heterologous host, <it>Lactococcus lactis</it>, was sufficient to induce biofilm formation by this organism.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Overall, this work (i) identifies variations in biofilm formation capacity among pathogenically different GAS strains, (ii) identifies GAS surface properties that may aid in biofilm stability and, (iii) establishes that the Scl1 surface protein is an important determinant of GAS biofilm, which is sufficient to enable biofilm formation in the heterologous host <it>Lactococcus</it>. In summary, the GAS surface adhesin Scl1 may have an important role in biofilm-associated pathogenicity.</p
Development of a Multi-Phase Mission Planning Tool for NASA X-57 Maxwell
The physical design and operation of electric aircraft like NASA Maxwell X-57 are significantly different than conventionally fueled aircraft. Operational optimization will require close coupling of aerodynamics, propulsion, and power. To address the uncertainty of electric aircraft operation, a system level Mission Planning Tool is developed to simulate all aircraft trajectory phases: taxi, motor run-up, takeoff, climb, cruise, and descent. The Mission Planning Tool captures performance parameters at each point of the trajectory including battery state of charge, the temperatures of components in the electrical system, and propulsion system thrust. This work describes the modeling of each mission phase, and compares the results of simulating a user-specified trajectory, and using a collocated optimal control approach to determine an optimal trajectory. The results show that optimization of the mission show a significant increase in the final battery state of charge over the user- specified simulation strategy. These results will inform the operation of the NASA Maxwell X-57 test flights that will take place this year
Work-related psychological health and psychological type among lead elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom
Building on a series of recent studies concerned with assessing work-related psychological health and psychological type among various groups of church leaders, this study reports new data provided by 134 Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTS) together with the two scales of the Francis Burnout Inventory (FBI) concerned with emotional exhaustion and satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches reported lower levels of emotional exhaustion and higher levels of satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, there was a higher proportion of extraverts among Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches. There was only a weak association between psychological type and burnout

This report summarizes the events of the 1st International Functional Metagenomics Workshop. The workshop was held on May 7 and 8 in St. Jacobs, Ontario, Canada and was focused on building a core international functional metagenomics community, exploring strategic research areas, and identifying opportunities for future collaboration and funding. The workshop was initiated by researchers at the University of Waterloo with support from the Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the University of Waterloo
