    Polynomial Interpretation of Multipole Vectors

    Copi, Huterer, Starkman and Schwarz introduced multipole vectors in a tensor context and used them to demonstrate that the first-year WMAP quadrupole and octopole planes align at roughly the 99.9% confidence level. In the present article the language of polynomials provides a new and independent derivation of the multipole vector concept. Bezout's Theorem supports an elementary proof that the multipole vectors exist and are unique (up to rescaling). The constructive nature of the proof leads to a fast, practical algorithm for computing multipole vectors. We illustrate the algorithm by finding exact solutions for some simple toy examples, and numerical solutions for the first-year WMAP quadrupole and octopole. We then apply our algorithm to Monte Carlo skies to independently re-confirm the estimate that the WMAP quadrupole and octopole planes align at the 99.9% level.Comment: Version 1: 6 pages.     FIRST REPORT OF NECTAR ROBBING BY SWORD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRDS ENSIFERA ENSIFERA

    A growing number of hummingbird species are known to practice nectar robbing. Hummingbirds that rob nectar tend to have short bills and to rob flowers with long, tubular corollas that prevent the birds from accessing nectar through its openings. We document that Sword-billed Hummingbirds Ensifera ensifera, which have the longest bills of any hummingbird species, are secondary nectar robbers on flowers of the red angelā€™s trumpet Brugmansia sanguinea, which have long tubular corollas and are regularly pollinated by Sword-billed Hummingbirds. When obtaining nectar through the floral opening of B. sanguinea, Sword-billed Hummingbirds' heads may be completely enveloped by the flower, severely limiting their vision. Sword-billed HummingbirdsĀ might be at a lower risk of predation when they rob nectar than when they insert their heads into the floral opening. Thus, nectar robbing in this species might function to reduce predation risk, although we have no data to support this speculation

    Investigation of Robotic Assembly of an Electric Motor Utilizing Single Arm and Dual Arm Robot Configurations

    An electric motor was assembled utilizing: (a) human labor only, (b) human labor combined with the assistance of a single robot arm, and (c) coordination between two robot arms. Assembly times were obtained for both human labor assembly of the motor and single-arm assembly of the motor; however, an unexpected equipment malfunction prevented the completion of the dual-arm assembly project. The data collected during the course of the study was analyzed to provide a basis for comparison between each method of assembly, as well as a comparison of each method with regard to its use in an actual manufacturing environment. Robotic applications in the manufacturing industry and the limitations of robotic equipment due to technological constraints were described. Hardware developments, which allow greater flexibility in robotics projects were illustrated, and their use in future projects is encouraged.Industrial Engineering and Managemen

    M.I.N.G., Mars Investment for a New Generation: Robotic construction of a permanently manned Mars base

    A basic procedure for robotically constructing a manned Mars base is outlined. The research procedure was divided into three areas: environment, robotics, and habitat. The base as designed will consist of these components: two power plants, communication facilities, a habitat complex, and a hangar, a garage, recreation and manufacturing facilities. The power plants will be self-contained nuclear fission reactors placed approx. 1 km from the base for safety considerations. The base communication system will use a combination of orbiting satellites and surface relay stations. This system is necessary for robotic contact with Phobos and any future communication requirements. The habitat complex will consist of six self-contained modules: core, biosphere, science, living quarters, galley/storage, and a sick bay which will be brought from Phobos. The complex will be set into an excavated hole and covered with approximately 0.5 m of sandbags to provide radiation protection for the astronauts. The recreation, hangar, garage, and manufacturing facilities will each be transformed from the four one-way landers. The complete complex will be built by autonomous, artificially intelligent robots. Robots incorporated into the design are as follows: Large Modular Construction Robots with detachable arms capable of large scale construction activities; Small Maneuverable Robotic Servicers capable of performing delicate tasks normally requiring a suited astronaut; and a trailer vehicle with modular type attachments to complete specific tasks; and finally, Mobile Autonomous Rechargeable Transporters capable of transferring air and water from the manufacturing facility to the habitat complex
