‘This Tobacco Has Always Been Here for Us,’ American Indian Views of Smoking: Risk and Protective Factors
We utilized eight talking circles to elicit American Indian views of smoking on a U.S. reservation. We report on (1) the historical context of tobacco use among Ojibwe Indians; (2) risk factors that facilitate use: peer/parental smoking, acceptability/availability of cigarettes; (3) cessation efforts/ inhibiting factors for cessation: smoking while pregnant, smoking to reduce stress , beliefs that cessation leads to debilitating withdrawals; and (4) protective factors that inhibit smoking initiation/use: negative health effects of smoking, parental and familial smoking behaviors, encouragement from youth to quit smoking, positive health benefits, “cold turkey” quitting, prohibition of smoking in tribal buildings/homes. Smoking is prevalent, but protective behaviors are evident and can assist in designing culturally sensitive prevention, intervention and cessation programs
On the self-adjointness of certain reduced Laplace-Beltrami operators
The self-adjointness of the reduced Hamiltonian operators arising from the
Laplace-Beltrami operator of a complete Riemannian manifold through quantum
Hamiltonian reduction based on a compact isometry group is studied. A simple
sufficient condition is provided that guarantees the inheritance of essential
self-adjointness onto a certain class of restricted operators and allows us to
conclude the self-adjointness of the reduced Laplace-Beltrami operators in a
concise way. As a consequence, the self-adjointness of spin Calogero-Sutherland
type reductions of `free' Hamiltonians under polar actions of compact Lie

International Journal of Fatigue, Volume 54:Evaluating surface deformation and near surface strain hardening resulting from shot peening a tempered martensitic steel and application to low cycle fatigue
The plastic deformation resulting from shot peening treatments applied to the ferritic heat resistant steelFV448 has been investigated. Two important effects have been quantified: surface roughness and strainhardening. 2D and 3D tactile and optical techniques for determining surface roughness amplitude parametershave been investigated; it was found that whilst Ra and Sa were consistent, Sz was generally higherthan Rz due to the increased probability of finding the worst case surface feature. Three different methodsfor evaluating the plastic strain profile have been evaluated with a view to establishing the variation inyield strength near the surface of a shot peened component. Microhardness, X-ray diffraction (XRD) linebroadening and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) local misorientation techniques were applied toboth uniaxially deformed calibration samples of known plastic strain and samples shot peened at intensitiesvarying from 4A to 18A to establish the variation in plastic strain and hence the variation in yieldstrength. The results from the three methods were compared; XRD and EBSD profiles were found to bethe most similar with microhardness profiles extending much deeper into the sample. Changes in themeasured plastic strain profile after exposure to low cycle fatigue and the correlation of these changeswith the cyclic stress–strain behaviour of the material are also discussed with a view to assessing theimportance of the dislocation profile in component life assessment procedures. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The spectral curve of a quaternionic holomorphic line bundle over a 2-torus
A conformal immersion of a 2-torus into the 4-sphere is characterized by an
auxiliary Riemann surface, its spectral curve. This complex curve encodes the
monodromies of a certain Dirac type operator on a quaternionic line bundle
associated to the immersion. The paper provides a detailed description of the
geometry and asymptotic behavior of the spectral curve. If this curve has
finite genus the Dirichlet energy of a map from a 2-torus to the 2-sphere or
the Willmore energy of an immersion from a 2-torus into the 4-sphere is given
by the residue of a specific meromorphic differential on the curve. Also, the
kernel bundle of the Dirac type operator evaluated over points on the 2-torus
linearizes in the Jacobian of the spectral curve. Those results are presented
in a geometric and self contained manner.Comment: 36 page
A probabilistic model for gene content evolution with duplication, loss, and horizontal transfer
We introduce a Markov model for the evolution of a gene family along a
phylogeny. The model includes parameters for the rates of horizontal gene
transfer, gene duplication, and gene loss, in addition to branch lengths in the
phylogeny. The likelihood for the changes in the size of a gene family across
different organisms can be calculated in O(N+hM^2) time and O(N+M^2) space,
where N is the number of organisms, is the height of the phylogeny, and M
is the sum of family sizes. We apply the model to the evolution of gene content
in Preoteobacteria using the gene families in the COG (Clusters of Orthologous
Groups) database
Resummation of the Divergent Perturbation Series for a Hydrogen Atom in an Electric Field
We consider the resummation of the perturbation series describing the energy
displacement of a hydrogenic bound state in an electric field (known as the
Stark effect or the LoSurdo-Stark effect), which constitutes a divergent formal
power series in the electric field strength. The perturbation series exhibits a
rich singularity structure in the Borel plane. Resummation methods are
presented which appear to lead to consistent results even in problematic cases
where isolated singularities or branch cuts are present on the positive and
negative real axis in the Borel plane. Two resummation prescriptions are
compared: (i) a variant of the Borel-Pade resummation method, with an
additional improvement due to utilization of the leading renormalon poles (for
a comprehensive discussion of renormalons see [M. Beneke, Phys. Rep. vol. 317,
p. 1 (1999)]), and (ii) a contour-improved combination of the Borel method with
an analytic continuation by conformal mapping, and Pade approximations in the
conformal variable. The singularity structure in the case of the LoSurdo-Stark
effect in the complex Borel plane is shown to be similar to (divergent)

Is there an oxidative cost of acute stress? Characterization, implication of glucocorticoids and modulation by prior stress experience
Acute rises in glucocorticoid hormones allow individuals to adaptively respond to environmental challenges but may also have negative consequences, including oxidative stress. While the effects of chronic glucocorticoid exposure on oxidative stress have been well characterized, those of acute stress or glucocorticoid exposure have mostly been overlooked. We examined the relationship between acute stress exposure, glucocorticoids and oxidative stress in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). We (i) characterized the pattern of oxidative stress during an acute stressor in two phenotypically distinct breeds; (ii) determined whether corticosterone ingestion, in the absence of acute stress, increased oxidative stress, which we call glucocorticoid-induced oxidative stress (GiOS); and (iii) explored how prior experience to stressful events affected GiOS. Both breeds exhibited an increase in oxidative stress in response to an acute stressor. Importantly, in the absence of acute stress, ingesting corticosterone caused an acute rise in plasma corticosterone and oxidative stress. Lastly, birds exposed to no previous acute stress or numerous stressful events had high levels of GiOS in response to acute stress, while birds with moderate prior exposure did not. Together, these findings suggest that an acute stress response results in GiOS, but prior experience to stressors may modulate that oxidative cost
Changes in serum calcitonin concentrations, incidence of medullary thyroid carcinoma, and impact of routine calcitonin concentration monitoring in the Exenatide study of Cardiovascular Event Lowering (EXSCEL)
OBJECTIVE Increases in serum calcitonin, a tumor marker for medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), have been associated with glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist use in some preclinical studies. We report calcitonin changes in exenatide-treated and placebo-administered participants and MTC incidence in the EXenatide Study of Cardiovascular Event Lowering (EXSCEL) and consider the impact of within-trial calcitonin monitoring. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS EXSCEL participants were randomized 1:1 to once-weekly exenatide 2 mg or placebo. Serum calcitonin was measured at baseline (with trial medication discontinued if >40 ng/L) and annually thereafter (with trial medication discontinued if ‡50 ng/L). Median calcitonin concentrations were calculated at each time point, and thyroid malignancies were collected prospectively. Data regarding follow-up after an elevated calcitonin were collected retrospectively. RESULTS At baseline, 52 (30 exenatide and 22 placebo) participants had calcitonin >40 ng/L, and during follow-up an additional 23 participants (15 exenatide and 8 placebo) had calcitonin ‡50 ng/L in the intention-to-treat population. Median calcitonin concentrations were similar between treatment groups at baseline with no increase over time. Confirmed MTC occurred in three participants (2 exenatide and 1 placebo), all of whom had significantly elevated baseline calcitonin values (413, 422, and 655 ng/L). CONCLUSIONS During a median 3.2 years’ follow-up, no change in serum calcitonin was seen with exenatide therapy. The three confirmed cases of MTC all occurred in participants with markedly elevated baseline calcitonin levels, measured prior to trial medication administration. Regular calcitonin monitoring identified no additional cases of MTC, suggesting no benefit of routine calcitonin monitoring during exenatide treatment
FGF receptor genes and breast cancer susceptibility: results from the Breast Cancer Association Consortium
Background:Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies in women. Genome-wide association studies have identified FGFR2 as a breast cancer susceptibility gene. Common variation in other fibroblast growth factor (FGF) receptors might also modify risk. We tested this hypothesis by studying genotyped single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and imputed SNPs in FGFR1, FGFR3, FGFR4 and FGFRL1 in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium.
Methods:Data were combined from 49 studies, including 53 835 cases and 50 156 controls, of which 89 050 (46 450 cases and 42 600 controls) were of European ancestry, 12 893 (6269 cases and 6624 controls) of Asian and 2048 (1116 cases and 932 controls) of African ancestry. Associations with risk of breast cancer, overall and by disease sub-type, were assessed using unconditional logistic regression.
Results:Little evidence of association with breast cancer risk was observed for SNPs in the FGF receptor genes. The strongest evidence in European women was for rs743682 in FGFR3; the estimated per-allele odds ratio was 1.05 (95 confidence interval=1.02-1.09, P=0.0020), which is substantially lower than that observed for SNPs in FGFR2.
Conclusion:Our results suggest that common variants in the other FGF receptors are not associated with risk of breast cancer to the degree observed for FGFR2. © 2014 Cancer Research UK
