Equilibrium Thermodynamic Effects of Sugar-based Polymers on Protein-complex Formation
The insides of cells are crowded. To model these conditions, synthetic crowders like Ficoll can be used to create crowded environments in vitro. Classic crowding models suggest that hard-core repulsions have the only effect on protein-complex stability. However, these theories neglect the contribution of “soft” chemical interactions. Such interactions can be stabilizing, if repulsive, and destabilizing, if attractive. To study how protein-protein interactions are affected by crowding, I investigated the effects of Ficoll on the equilibrium thermodynamics of protein complexes. Specifically, I quantified the temperature-dependence of this interaction to determine the enthalpic contribution. I found that Ficoll has a measurable enthalpic contribution to protein complex stability that was otherwise disregarded in classic crowding theories
Diffuse small bowel thickening in aids patient - a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Diarrhea is common in HIV/AIDS patients, caused by both classic enteric pathogens and different opportunistic agents. <it>Infection with these different pathogens may lead to similar radiological findings, thus causing diagnostic confusion</it>.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 30-yr-old female with AIDS presented with chronic diarrhea of 4 months duration. She had diffuse small bowel thickening present on CT scan of her abdomen, with stool examination showing no parasites. She was erroneously diagnosed as abdominal tuberculosis and given antituberculosis drugs with which she showed no improvement. Repeat stool examination later at a specialized laboratory revealed <it>Cryptosporidium parvum </it>infection.</p> <p>The patient was given an extended course of nitazoxanide treatment, as her stool examination was positive for <it>Cryptosporidium parvum </it>even after 2 weeks of drug consumption. Parasite clearance was documented after 10 weeks of treatment. Interestingly, the bowel thickening reversed with parasitological clearance.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>Cryptosporidium parvum </it>may lead to small bowel thickening in AIDS patients. This small bowel thickening may reverse following parasitological clearance.</p
Pancreatitis after percutaneous ethanol injection into HCC: a minireview of the literature
Deaths after percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may occur within a few hours to a few days following the procedure because of hemoperitoneum and haemorrhage from oesophageal varices or hepatic insufficiency. Pancreatitis has been recently reported as a rare lethal complication of intra-arterial PEI, another modality for treating HCCs. In this minireview, we analyze the literature concerning the development of acute pancreatitis after PEI. Pathogenesis of pancreatitis from opioids and ethanol is also addressed. Treatment with opioids to reduce the patient's abdominal pain after PEI in combination with the PEI itself may lead to direct toxic effects, thus favouring the development of pancreatitis
