Dirac Cat States in Relativistic Landau Levels
We show that a relativistic version of Schrodinger cat states, here called
Dirac cat states, can be built in relativistic Landau levels when an external
magnetic field couples to a relativistic spin 1/2 charged particle. Under
suitable initial conditions, the associated Dirac equation produces unitarily
Dirac cat states involving the orbital quanta of the particle in a well defined
mesoscopic regime. We demonstrate that the proposed Dirac cat states have a
purely relativistic origin and cease to exist in the non-relativistic limit. In
this manner, we expect to open relativistic quantum mechanics to the rich

Two-Loop Calculations with Vertex Corrections in the Walecka Model
Two-loop corrections with scalar and vector form factors are calculated for
nuclear matter in the Walecka model. The on-shell form factors are derived from
vertex corrections within the framework of the model and are highly damped at
large spacelike momenta. The two-loop corrections are evaluated first by using
the one-loop parameters and mean fields and then by refitting the total
energy/baryon to empirical nuclear matter saturation properties. The modified
two-loop corrections are significantly smaller than those computed with bare
vertices. Contributions from the anomalous isoscalar form factor of the nucleon
are included for the first time. The effects of the implicit density dependence
of the form factors, which arise from the shift in the baryon mass, are also

Quantifying the impact of climate change on drought regimes using the Standardised Precipitation Index
The study presents a methodology to characterise short- or long-term drought events, designed to aid understanding of how climate change may affect future risk. An indicator of drought magnitude, combining parameters of duration, spatial extent and intensity, is presented based on the Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI). The SPI is applied to observed (1955–2003) and projected (2003–2050) precipitation data from the Community Integrated Assessment System (CIAS). Potential consequences of climate change on drought regimes in Australia, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Spain, Portugal and the USA are quantified. Uncertainty is assessed by emulating a range of global circulation models to project climate change. Further uncertainty is addressed through the use of a high-emission scenario and a low stabilisation scenario representing a stringent mitigation policy. Climate change was shown to have a larger effect on the duration and magnitude of long-term droughts, and Australia, Brazil, Spain, Portugal and the USA were highlighted as being particularly vulnerable to multi-year drought events, with the potential for drought magnitude to exceed historical experience. The study highlights the characteristics of drought which may be more sensitive under climate change. For example, on average, short-term droughts in the USA do not become more intense but are projected to increase in duration. Importantly, the stringent mitigation scenario had limited effect on drought regimes in the first half of the twenty-first century, showing that adaptation to drought risk will be vital in these regions
Spectral domain optical coherence tomography in mouse models of retinal degeneration
PURPOSE: Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) allows cross-sectional visualization of retinal structures in vivo. Here, we report the efficacy of a commercially available SD-OCT device to study mouse models of retinal degeneration. METHODS: C57BL/6 and BALB/c wild type mice and three different mouse models of hereditary retinal degeneration (Rho, rd1, RPE65) were investigated using confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (cSLO) for en face visualization and SD-OCT for cross-sectional imaging of retinal structures. Histology was performed to correlate structural findings in SD-OCT with light microscopic data. RESULTS: In C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice, cSLO and SD-OCT imaging provided structural details of frequently used control animals (central retinal thickness, CRT = 237 2microm and CRT = 211 10microm). RPE65 mice at 11 months of age showed a significant reduction of retinal thickness (CRT = 193 2microm) with thinning of the outer nuclear layer. Rho mice at P28 demonstrated degenerative changes mainly in the outer retinal layers (CRT = 193 2microm). Examining rd1 animals before and after the onset of retinal degeneration allowed to monitor disease progression (CRT = 246 4microm, CRT = 143 4microm). Correlation of CRT assessed by histology and SD-OCT was high (r = 0.897). CONCLUSION: We demonstrated cross sectional visualization of retinal structures in wild type mice and mouse models for retinal degeneration in vivo using a commercially available SD-OCT device. This method will help to reduce numbers of animals needed per study by allowing longitudinal study designs and facilitate characterization of disease dynamics and evaluation of putative therapeutic effects following experimental interventions

Boronic acid solution speciation can be controlled during the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of haloaryl MIDA boronic esters to enable the formal homologation of boronic acid derivatives. The reaction is contingent upon control of the basic biphase and is thermodynamically driven: temperature control provides highly chemoselective access to either BMIDA adducts at room temperature or BPin products at elevated temperature. Control experiments and solubility analyses have provided some insight into the mechanistic operation of the formal homologation process
Designing an automated clinical decision support system to match clinical practice guidelines for opioid therapy for chronic pain
Abstract Background Opioid prescribing for chronic pain is common and controversial, but recommended clinical practices are followed inconsistently in many clinical settings. Strategies for increasing adherence to clinical practice guideline recommendations are needed to increase effectiveness and reduce negative consequences of opioid prescribing in chronic pain patients. Methods Here we describe the process and outcomes of a project to operationalize the 2003 VA/DOD Clinical Practice Guideline for Opioid Therapy for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain into a computerized decision support system (DSS) to encourage good opioid prescribing practices during primary care visits. We based the DSS on the existing ATHENA-DSS. We used an iterative process of design, testing, and revision of the DSS by a diverse team including guideline authors, medical informatics experts, clinical content experts, and end-users to convert the written clinical practice guideline into a computable algorithm to generate patient-specific recommendations for care based upon existing information in the electronic medical record (EMR), and a set of clinical tools. Results The iterative revision process identified numerous and varied problems with the initially designed system despite diverse expert participation in the design process. The process of operationalizing the guideline identified areas in which the guideline was vague, left decisions to clinical judgment, or required clarification of detail to insure safe clinical implementation. The revisions led to workable solutions to problems, defined the limits of the DSS and its utility in clinical practice, improved integration into clinical workflow, and improved the clarity and accuracy of system recommendations and tools. Conclusions Use of this iterative process led to development of a multifunctional DSS that met the approval of the clinical practice guideline authors, content experts, and clinicians involved in testing. Plantar forefoot pressures in psoriatic arthritis-related dactylitis: an exploratory study
Dactylitis is a common feature of psoriatic arthritis (PsA); local physical trauma has been identified as a possible contributing factor. The aim of this study was to explore differences in forefoot plantar pressures in patients with PsA with and without dactylitis and compare to healthy controls. Thirty-six participants were recruited into three groups: group A PsA plus a history of dactylitis; group B PsA, no dactylitis; group C control participants. Forefoot plantar pressures were measured barefoot and in-shoe at the left second and fourth toes and corresponding metatarsophalangeal joints. Temporal and spatial parameters were measured and data from the foot impact scale for rheumatoid arthritis (FIS-RA), EQ5D and health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) were collected. Pressure time integral peak plantar pressure, and contact time barefoot and in-shoe were not significantly different between groups. Temporal and spatial parameters reported no significant differences between groups. ANOVA analysis and subsequent post hoc testing using Games-Howell test yielded significance in FIS-RA scores between both PsA groups versus controls, A p ≤ 0.0001 and PsA group B p < 0.0001 in the FIS-RA impairment and footwear domain, PsA group A p < 0.03 and PsA group B p ≤ 0.05 in the FIS-RA activity and participation domain compared to controls. This is the first exploratory study to investigate forefoot plantar pressures in patients with and without historical dactylitis in PsA. FIS-RA scores indicate PsA patients have significant limitations compared to controls, although a history of dactylitis does not appear to worsen patient reported outcomes
Provision of foot health services for people with rheumatoid arthritis in New South Wales: a web-based survey of local podiatrists
Background: It is unclear if podiatric foot care for people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in New South Wales (NSW) meets current clinical recommendations. The objective of this study was to survey podiatrists' perceptions of the nature of podiatric foot care provision for people who have RA in NSW.Methods: An anonymous, cross-sectional survey with a web-based questionnaire was conducted. The survey questionnaire was developed according to clinical experience and current foot care recommendations. State registered podiatrists practising in the state of NSW were invited to participate. The survey link was distributed initially via email to members of the Australian Podiatry Association (NSW), and distributed further through snowballing techniques using professional networks. Data was analysed to assess significant associations between adherence to clinical practice guidelines, and private/public podiatry practices.Results: 86 podiatrists participated in the survey (78% from private practice, 22% from public practice). Respondents largely did not adhere to formal guidelines to manage their patients (88%). Only one respondent offered a dedicated service for patients with RA. Respondents indicated that the primary mode of accessing podiatry was by self-referral (68%). Significant variation was observed regarding access to disease and foot specific assessments and treatment strategies. Assessment methods such as administration of patient reported outcome measures, vascular and neurological assessments were not conducted by all respondents. Similarly, routine foot care strategies such as prescription of foot orthoses, foot health advice and footwear were not employed by all respondents.Conclusions: The results identified issues in foot care provision which should be explored through further research. Foot care provision in NSW does not appear to meet the current recommended standards for the management of foot problems in people who have RA. Improvements to foot care could be undertaken in terms of providing better access to examination techniques and treatment strategies that are recommended by evidence based treatment paradigms. © 2013 Hendry et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
280 GHz Focal Plane Unit Design and Characterization for the SPIDER-2 Suborbital Polarimeter
We describe the construction and characterization of the 280 GHz bolometric
focal plane units (FPUs) to be deployed on the second flight of the
balloon-borne SPIDER instrument. These FPUs are vital to SPIDER's primary
science goal of detecting or placing an upper limit on the amplitude of the
primordial gravitational wave signature in the cosmic microwave background
(CMB) by constraining the B-mode contamination in the CMB from Galactic dust
emission. Each 280 GHz focal plane contains a 16 x 16 grid of corrugated
silicon feedhorns coupled to an array of aluminum-manganese transition-edge
sensor (TES) bolometers fabricated on 150 mm diameter substrates. In total, the
three 280 GHz FPUs contain 1,530 polarization sensitive bolometers (765 spatial
pixels) optimized for the low loading environment in flight and read out by
time-division SQUID multiplexing. In this paper we describe the mechanical,
thermal, and magnetic shielding architecture of the focal planes and present
cryogenic measurements which characterize yield and the uniformity of several
bolometer parameters. The assembled FPUs have high yields, with one array as
high as 95% including defects from wiring and readout. We demonstrate high
uniformity in device parameters, finding the median saturation power for each
TES array to be ~3 pW at 300 mK with a less than 6% variation across each array
at one standard deviation. These focal planes will be deployed alongside the 95
and 150 GHz telescopes in the SPIDER-2 instrument, slated to fly from McMurdo
Station in Antarctica in December 2018
Annotation of two large contiguous regions from the Haemonchus contortus genome using RNA-seq and comparative analysis with Caenorhabditis elegans
The genomes of numerous parasitic nematodes are currently being sequenced, but their complexity and size, together with high levels of intra-specific sequence variation and a lack of reference genomes, makes their assembly and annotation a challenging task. Haemonchus contortus is an economically significant parasite of livestock that is widely used for basic research as well as for vaccine development and drug discovery. It is one of many medically and economically important parasites within the strongylid nematode group. This group of parasites has the closest phylogenetic relationship with the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, making comparative analysis a potentially powerful tool for genome annotation and functional studies. To investigate this hypothesis, we sequenced two contiguous fragments from the H. contortus genome and undertook detailed annotation and comparative analysis with C. elegans. The adult H. contortus transcriptome was sequenced using an Illumina platform and RNA-seq was used to annotate a 409 kb overlapping BAC tiling path relating to the X chromosome and a 181 kb BAC insert relating to chromosome I. In total, 40 genes and 12 putative transposable elements were identified. 97.5% of the annotated genes had detectable homologues in C. elegans of which 60% had putative orthologues, significantly higher than previous analyses based on EST analysis. Gene density appears to be less in H. contortus than in C. elegans, with annotated H. contortus genes being an average of two-to-three times larger than their putative C. elegans orthologues due to a greater intron number and size. Synteny appears high but gene order is generally poorly conserved, although areas of conserved microsynteny are apparent. C. elegans operons appear to be partially conserved in H. contortus. Our findings suggest that a combination of RNA-seq and comparative analysis with C. elegans is a powerful approach for the annotation and analysis of strongylid nematode genomes
