On one hand the colonial background and the resultant prestige attached to English has played a significant role in determining the pivotal position of English in Pakistan; on the other hand the spread of English across the globe has further strengthened this position. One of the dimensions of the spread of English in Pakistan is the phenomenon of code mixing and the resultant language hybridization. The frequent mixing of English words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in Urdu not only shows the expansion of the vocabulary of Urdu in a specific dimension but also it indicates the spread of English in Pakistan. This linguistic phenomenon has very significant socio-cultural implications. Within this background the paper aims at exploring the process of language hybridization by focusing on the phenomenon of code mixing with specific reference to verb hybridization. The linguistic data for the research is taken from two TV programs: ‘News Night’ and ‘Pchaas Minute’. The paper focuses only on the linguistic analysis of code mixing of lexical items falling in the verb category i.e. hybridization in compound verbs and verb phrases; and presents the linguistic and sociolinguistic dimensions of the phenomenon. Hopefully the research will help in understanding the linguistic/ sociolinguistic change that is taking place in Pakistan with reference to the spread of English.</p

in this region Pakistan presents a complex linguistic picture where English holds a unique position. The colonial background, prestige attached to English, education policies during the last fifty years, and progress in the field of media and communication etc. have played a pivotal role in determining the role of English in this linguistic scene. Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, has gradually been replaced by English in many walks of life. English words, phrases, clauses, and sentences are frequently mixed in Urdu. Use of code switching and code mixing as linguistic strategies, has become a familiar and well-known phenomenon that is not merely linguistic rather is socio-cultural in nature. The reciprocal process of language desertion on one hand and adoption of foreign vocabulary items on the other hand in the recent decades, reflects the change in modes of thought and action in the whole society; and can be used as a measuring gauge for the socio-linguistic change in the area.Within this context the paper aims at exploring the process of language desertion and hybridization by focusing on the phenomenon of code mixing, particularly in electronic media. The linguistic data for the research is taken from a TV talk show ‘ Pchaas Minute’; the paper focuses only on the analysis of code mixing of lexical items falling in the noun category such as noun insertions, noun phrase insertions, and hybridization in nouns, and noun phrases etc. It is expected that the research will provide a useful insight into the nature and direction of linguistic/ sociolinguistic change in Pakistan.</p

Generation of Cu-In alloy surfaces from CuInO2 as selective catalytic sites for CO2 electroreduction

The lack of availability of efficient, selective and stable electrocatalysts is a major hindrance for scalable CO2 reduction processes. Herein, we report the generation of Cu-In alloy surfaces for electrochemical reduction of CO2 from mixed metal oxides of CuInO2 as the starting material. The material successfully generates selective active sites to form CO from CO2 electroreduction at mild overpotentials. Density functional theory (DFT) indicates that the site occupation of the inert In occurs more on the specific sites of Cu. In addition, while In atoms do not preferentially adsorb H or CO, Cu atoms, which neighbor the In atoms, alters the preference of their adsorption. This preference for site occupation and altered adsorption may account for the improved selectivity over that observed for Cu metal. This study demonstrates an example of a scalable synthesis method of bimetallic surfaces utilized with the mixed oxide precursor having the diversity of metal choice, which may drastically alter the electrocatalytic performance, as presented herein

Global perspective of familial hypercholesterolaemia: a cross-sectional study from the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC)

none724siBackground The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally.Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Data were assessed overall and by WHO regions, sex, and index versus non-index cases.Findings Of the 61 612 individuals in the registry, 42 167 adults (21 999 [53.6%] women) from 56 countries were included in the study. Of these, 31 798 (75.4%) were diagnosed with the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, and 35 490 (84.2%) were from the WHO region of Europe. Median age of participants at entry in the registry was 46.2 years (IQR 34.3-58.0); median age at diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia was 44.4 years (32.5-56.5), with 40.2% of participants younger than 40 years when diagnosed. Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors increased progressively with age and varied by WHO region. Prevalence of coronary disease was 17.4% (2.1% for stroke and 5.2% for peripheral artery disease), increasing with concentrations of untreated LDL cholesterol, and was about two times lower in women than in men. Among patients receiving lipid-lowering medications, 16 803 (81.1%) were receiving statins and 3691 (21.2%) were on combination therapy, with greater use of more potent lipid-lowering medication in men than in women. Median LDL cholesterol was 5.43 mmol/L (IQR 4.32-6.72) among patients not taking lipid-lowering medications and 4.23 mmol/L (3.20-5.66) among those taking them. Among patients taking lipid-lowering medications, 2.7% had LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L; the use of combination therapy, particularly with three drugs and with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors, was associated with a higher proportion and greater odds of having LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L. Compared with index cases, patients who were non-index cases were younger, with lower LDL cholesterol and lower prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases (all p&lt;0.001).Interpretation Familial hypercholesterolaemia is diagnosed late. Guideline-recommended LDL cholesterol concentrations are infrequently achieved with single-drug therapy. Cardiovascular risk factors and presence of coronary disease were lower among non-index cases, who were diagnosed earlier. Earlier detection and greater use of combination therapies are required to reduce the global burden of familial hypercholesterolaemia. Copyright (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
