    Total Mass TCI driven by Parametric Estimation

    This paper presents the Total Mass Target Controlled Infusion algorithm. The system comprises an On Line tuned Algorithm for Recovery Detection (OLARD) after an initial bolus administration and a Bayesian identification method for parametric estimation based on sparse measurements of the accessible signal. To design the drug dosage profile, two algorithms are here proposed. During the transient phase, an Input Variance Control (IVC) algorithm is used. It is based on the concept of TCI and aims to steer the drug effect to a predefined target value within an a priori fixed interval of time. After the steady state phase is reached the drug dose regimen is controlled by a Total Mass Control (TMC) algorithm. The mass control law for compartmental systems is robust even in the presence of parameter uncertainties. The whole system feasibility has been evaluated for the case of Neuromuscular Blockade (NMB) level and was tested both in simulation and in real cases

    Prevenção do câncer de mamas e colo uterino na perspectiva de mulheres: implicações para o serviço

    Estudo de natureza descritiva com objetivo de descrever os fatores que influenciam na realizao do exame Papanicolaou na opinio de mulheres e suas implicaes para o servio. Participaram 300 mulheres sexualmente ativas, selecionadas aleatoriamente, atravs dos pronturios. Os dados foram coletados por meio de um questionrio. Utilizou-se o programa Excell para construo dos bancos de dados, organizao de tabelas e grficos e clculo das porcentagens pelo SPSS. O projeto foi aprovado pelo Comit de tica em Pesquisas envolvendo seres humanos do Hospital Universitrio Jlio Muller. Os resultados mostram que 28% estavam com o Papanicolaou atrasado h mais de 3 anos. Entre os motivos da no realizao destacaram-se: vergonha 17(44,7%), desconhecimento da importncia e deixa para depois 8(20%). A concluso do estudo permitiu destacar que fundamental os profissionais de sade conhecerem os motivos que levam as mulheres a no realizao da preveno do cncer de colo uterino, no sentido de acolherem-nas de modo que essa preveno seja importante na vida de cada uma delas e, desse modo as contribuies na reduo da mortalidade por cncer de colo uterino

    Gurjao, ALD, Goncalves, R, de Moura, RF, and Gobbi, S. Acute effect of static stretching on rate of force development and maximal voluntary contraction in older women. J Strength Cond Res 23(7): 2149-2154, 2009-The purpose of this study was to investigate, in older women, the acute effect of static stretching (SS) on both muscle activation and force output. Twenty-three older women (64.6 +/- 7.1 yr) participated in the study. The maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), rate of force development (RFD) (50, 100, 150, and 200 ms relative to onset of muscular contraction), and peak RFD (PRFD) (the steepest slope of the curve during the first 200 ms) were tested under 2 randomly separate conditions: SS and control (C). Electromyographic (EMG) activity of the vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), and biceps femoris (BF) muscles also was assessed. The MVC was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the 3 trials of SS when compared with the C condition (control: 925.0 +/- 50.9 N; trial 1 : 854.3 +/- 55.3 N; trial 2 : 863.1 +/- 52.2 N; and trial 3 : 877.5 +/- 49.9 N). PRFD showed a significant decrease only for the first 2 trials of SS when compared with the C condition (control: 2672.3 +/- 259.1 N/s; trial 1 : 2296.6 +/- 300.7 N/s; and trial 2 : 2197.9 +/- 246.3 N/s). However, no difference was found for RFD (50, 100, 150, and 200 ms relative to onset of muscular contraction). The EMG activity for VM, VL, and BF was not significantly different between the C and SS conditions. In conclusion, the older women's capacity to produce muscular force decreased after their performance of SS exercises. The mechanisms responsible for this effect do not appear to be related to muscle activation. Thus, if flexibility is to be trained, it is recommended that SS does not occur just before the performance of activities that require high levels of muscular force

    Interleukin-6-type cytokines in neuroprotection and neuromodulation:oncostatin M, but not leukemia inhibitory factor, requires neuronal adenosine A(1) receptor function

    Neuroprotection is one of the prominent functions of the interleukin (IL)-6-type cytokine family, for which the underlying mechanism(s) are not fully understood. We have previously shown that neuroprotection and neuromodulation mediated by IL-6 require neuronal adenosine A(1) receptor (A(1)R) function. We now have investigated whether two other IL-6-type cytokines [oncostatin M (OSM) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF)] use a similar mechanism. It is presented here that OSM but not LIF, enhanced the expression of A(1)Rs (both mRNA and protein levels) in cultured neurons. Whereas the neuroprotective effect of LIF was unchanged in A(1)R deficient neurons, OSM failed to protect neurons in the absence of A(1)R. In addition, OSM pre-treatment for 4 h potentiated the A(1)R-mediated inhibition of electrically evoked excitatory post-synaptic currents recorded from hippocampal slices either under normal or hypoxic conditions. No such effect was observed after LIF pre-treatment. Our findings thus strongly suggest that, despite known structural and functional similarities, OSM and LIF use different mechanisms to achieve neuroprotection and neuromodulation

    Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)In the present study, it was evaluated the susceptibility of prostatic lesions in male adult rats exposed to Di-N-butyl-phthalate during fetal and lactational periods and submitted to MNU plus testosterone carcinogenesis protocol. Pregnant females were distributed into four experimental groups: CN (negative control); CMNU (MNU control); TDBP100 (100 mg/kg of DBP); TDBP500 (500 mg/kg of DBP). Females from the TDBP groups received DBP, by gavage, from gestation day 15 (GD15) to postnatal day 21 (DPN21), while C animals received the vehicle (corn oil). CMNU, TDBP100, and TDBP500 groups received a single intraperitoneal injection of MNU (50 mg/kg) on the sixth postnatal week. After that, testosterone cypionate was administered subcutaneously two times a week (2 mg/kg) for 24 weeks. The animals were euthanized on PND220. Distal segment fragments of the ventral (VP) and dorsolateral prostate (DLP) were fixed and processed for histopathological analysis. Protein extracts from ventral prostate were obtained, and western blotting was performed to AR, ER, MAPK (ERK1/2), and pan-AKT. Stereological analysis showed an increase in the epithelial compartment in TDBP100 and TDBP500 compared to CN. In general, there was increase in the incidence of inflammation and metaplasia/dysplasia in the DBP-treated groups, mainly in DLP, compared to CN and CMNU. Proliferation index was significant higher in TDBP500 and PIN (prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia) was more frequent in this group compared to CMNU. Western blot assays showed an increase in the expressions of AR and MAPK (ERK1/2) in the TDBP100 compared to CN, and ER and AKT expressions were higher in the TDBP500 group compared do CN. These results showed that different doses of DBP during prostate organogenesis in Wistar rats could increase the incidence of premalignant lesions in initiated rats inducing distinct biological responses in the adulthood.     Liver Anatomy, Histochemistry, and Ultrastructure of Eupemphix nattereri (Anura: Leiuperidae) During the Breeding Season

    The arrangement of the hepatic tissue is directly related to physiological characteristics of animals, such as ectothermy, diet, and reproductive status. Here, we describe the anatomy, histology, and ultrastructure of the liver in adult males of Eupemphix nattereri during the breeding season. The liver is an organ with an irregular shape, red in color, and occupies a large portion of the body cavity. Anatomically, it is divided into three lobes: right, mid, and left. Further subdivision into lobules is not observed. A thin capsule of connective tissue covers externally the organ, which is responsible for its support and protection. The hepatic parenchyma is formed by two layers of polyhedral-shaped hepatocytes arranged in a double cordon. These cordons are filled with hepatic sinusoids that greatly vary in size and are closely associated with hepatocytes. There are also bile canaliculi and immune cells between hepatic cordons-the melanomacrophages. These canaliculi are covered with short microvilli, which protrude into the lumen. Melanomacrophages have several cytoplasmic substances, such as melanin, lipofuscin, and hemosiderin, which form due to liver metabolism and contribute to the typical coloration of the organ.     Morphological Changes of the Epididymis and Description of the Excurrent Ducts of Phrynops geoffroanus (Testudines: Chelidae) During the Reproductive Cycle

    The seminal ducts (efferent ductule, epididymis, and deferent duct) in adults of Phrynops geoffroanus were examined using light microscopy. A series of tubules (efferent ductules) connect the testes to the epididymides. The efferent ductules are formed by a rete of small tubules of varying diameters, with simple columnar epithelium formed by the ciliated cells, nonciliated cells, and few basal cells. The epididymis is a simple, long and highly convoluted tubule that receives the efferent ductules throughout its extension. It is covered by a pseudostratified columnar epithelium with three cellular types: the principal cells, which are the most abundant, basal cells, and a small narrow cell. The histological differences in the epididymis region (cranial, medial, and caudal), as well as the differences in the epithelium throughout the reproductive cycle, are discussed. The deferent ducts consist of a low pseudostratified epithelium with two cellular types: the principal and basal cells. During the months analyzed, spermatozoa were stored in the epididymis, and deferent ducts were found. Anat Rec, 294:145-155, 2011.     Effect of Strength Training on Rate of Force Development in Older Women

    We analyzed the effect of an 8-week strength training (ST) program on the rate of farce development (RFD) and electromyographic activity (EMG) in older women. Seventeen women (M age = 63.4 years, SD = 4.9) without previous ST experience were randomly assigned to either a control (n = 7) or training (n = 10) group. A leg-press isometric test was used for assessment. ST (three sessions/week, three sets of 10-12 repetition maximum, five different exercises) induced significant increases (p < .05) on peak RFD (48.4%) and on RID and EMG of vastus medialis at time intervals of 0-50, 0-100, 0-150, and 0-200 ms (41.1-69.2% and 43.8-64.3 %, respectively).
