    Exploring Supports and Barriers to Inclusion in Occupational Therapy Education

    The recent innumerable social and racial injustices and healthcare disparities experienced globally have catapulted diversity and inclusion discussions to the forefront. The purpose of this study was to identify the supports and barriers to inclusion in occupational therapy (OT) education from the experiences of OT students from historically marginalized groups and the perspectives of OT faculty/staff. The authors used a convergent mixed methods design for the study, which consisted of an online survey and semi-structured interviews. 131 students and 35 faculty/staff completed the survey, while 20 students and 11 faculty completed interviews. Five themes emerged from the data: 1) Barriers and facilitators exist while exploring OT as a potential career; 2) There are pros and cons to the OT admissions process for students from historically marginalized groups; 3) Students from historically marginalized groups experience varying degrees of exclusion and a limited sense of belonging within their OT programs; 4) Many OT programs have good intentions to promote diversity and inclusion through various efforts; and 5) Some OT program efforts may be counterproductive, and more actions must be taken to further promote inclusion and address barriers to inclusion. Numerous supports and barriers to inclusion in OT education were identified within these themes. Findings indicate that despite numerous inclusion efforts, students from historically marginalized groups continue to experience several barriers that impact inclusion in OT education. Based on these findings, the authors provide strategies to promote and advocate for inclusion in OT education

    La discapacidad abarca una serie de limitaciones y/o deficiencias a ciertas actividades a nivel social. Estas limitaciones son dificultades para realizar una tarea o labor; que afecta a una estructura o función corporal además de las restricciones en cuanto a la participación, ocasionando un impedimento ante una situación vital. Las personas con discapacidad experimentan un nivel desproporcionado de enfermedad oral en comparación con la población en general; sus necesidades dentales son complejas y pueden estar relacionadas con anomalías congénitas o adquiridas subyacentes, así como la incapacidad de recibir la atención personal y profesional adecuada. El problema global de esta situación, es que existen pocos estudios enfocados a medir las expectativas que tienen los odontólogos frente a la atención de pacientes con algún tipo de discapacidad; y esto con el fin de mejorar medir las expectativas y experiencias en estudiantes de odontología frente a la atención de pacientes en condiciones y poder obtener una preparación completa sumando experiencias en la atención de este tipo de pacientes en la vida profesional.The disability covers a series of limitations and / or deficiencies in certain activities at the social level. These limitations are difficulties in performing a task or job; which affects a body structure or function in addition to the restrictions regarding participation, causing an impediment to a vital situation.     Analog implementation of a robust control strategy for mechanical systems

    An analog implementation of a control structure with disturbance identification for mechanical systems is presented. This control structure is based on a discontinuous observer that estimates the state and the disturbances in the plant, improving the robustness of the closed loop system which also displays a control input free from chattering. The control structure, built with operational amplifiers, is simple, showing good performance for stabilization, regulation, and tracking objectives. The performance of the circuit is compared with a digital implementation based on a real-time data acquisition card to control a simple pendulum. In addition, the circuit performance is illustrated on an industrial 2-DOF robot

    Non-integrability of some few body problems in two degrees of freedom

    The basic theory of Differential Galois and in particular Morales--Ramis theory is reviewed with focus in analyzing the non--integrability of various problems of few bodies in Celestial Mechanics. The main theoretical tools are: Morales--Ramis theorem, the algebrization method of Acosta--Bl\'azquez and Kovacic's algorithm. Morales--Ramis states that if Hamiltonian system has an additional meromorphic integral in involution in a neighborhood of a specific solution, then the differential Galois group of the normal variational equations is abelian. The algebrization method permits under general conditions to recast the variational equation in a form suitable for its analysis by means of Kovacic's algorithm. We apply these tools to various examples of few body problems in Celestial Mechanics: (a) the elliptic restricted three body in the plane with collision of the primaries; (b) a general Hamiltonian system of two degrees of freedom with homogeneous potential of degree -1; here we perform McGehee's blow up and obtain the normal variational equation in the form of an hypergeometric equation. We recover Yoshida's criterion for non--integrability. Then we contrast two methods to compute the Galois group: the well known, based in the Schwartz--Kimura table, and the lesser based in Kovacic's algorithm. We apply these methodology to three problems: the rectangular four body problem, the anisotropic Kepler problem and two uncoupled Kepler problems in the line; the last two depend on a mass parameter, but while in the anisotropic problem it is integrable for only two values of the parameter, the two uncoupled Kepler problems is completely integrable for all values of the masses.Comment: 33 page

    On Hurst exponent estimation under heavy-tailed distributions

    In this paper, we show how the sampling properties of the Hurst exponent methods of estimation change with the presence of heavy tails. We run extensive Monte Carlo simulations to find out how rescaled range analysis (R/S), multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA), detrending moving average (DMA) and generalized Hurst exponent approach (GHE) estimate Hurst exponent on independent series with different heavy tails. For this purpose, we generate independent random series from stable distribution with stability exponent {\alpha} changing from 1.1 (heaviest tails) to 2 (Gaussian normal distribution) and we estimate the Hurst exponent using the different methods. R/S and GHE prove to be robust to heavy tails in the underlying process. GHE provides the lowest variance and bias in comparison to the other methods regardless the presence of heavy tails in data and sample size. Utilizing this result, we apply a novel approach of the intraday time-dependent Hurst exponent and we estimate the Hurst exponent on high frequency data for each trading day separately. We obtain Hurst exponents for S&P500 index for the period beginning with year 1983 and ending by November 2009 and we discuss the surprising result which uncovers how the market's behavior changed over this long period
