Mecanismos elementales del relato policiaco en un cuento de María Elena Bermúdez

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

The Guardian USA Baseball Headlines from a Syntactic Perspective

The objective of this paper is to identify the main syntactic characteristics examined in a corpus of 100 baseball headlines from the sports section more specifically the Major League Baseball MLB section of the daily newspaper The Guardian USA in its electronic version Newspaper headlines are distinctive because they are brief texts that summarize the content of the article they precede Baseball headlines in The Guardian USA respect these characteristics Furthermore they display specific syntactic features that are analyzed in this article The main results of the study were firstly that this newspaper favors the use of verbal constructions in its headlines rather than non-verbal constructions On the one hand the present tense third person was the verbal construction most commonly used On the other hand in the non-verbal constructions the most common headline was the one constituted by two noun phrases which were linked by a colo

Tidal Disruption Event Host Galaxies in the Context of the Local Galaxy Population

We study the properties of tidal disruption event (TDE) host galaxies in the context of a catalog of ~500,000 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We explore whether selection effects can account for the overrepresentation of TDEs in E+A/post-starburst galaxies by creating matched galaxy samples. Accounting for possible selection effects due to black hole (BH) mass, redshift completeness, strong AGN presence, bulge colors, and surface brightness can reduce the apparent overrepresentation of TDEs in E+A host galaxies by a factor of ~4 (from ~×\times100-190 to ~×\times25-48), but cannot fully explain the preference. We find that TDE host galaxies have atypical photometric properties compared to similar, "typical" galaxies. In particular, TDE host galaxies tend to live in or near the "green valley" between star-forming and passive galaxies, and have bluer bulge colors (Δ(gr)0.3\Delta (g-r) \approx 0.3 mag), lower half-light surface brightnesses (by ~1 mag/arcsec2^2), higher Sersic indices (Δng3\Delta n_{\rm g} \approx 3), and higher bulge-to-total-light ratios (ΔB/T0.5\Delta B/T \approx 0.5) than galaxies with matched BH masses. We find that TDE host galaxies appear more centrally concentrated and that all have high galaxy Sersic indices and B/TB/T fractions---on average in the top 10% of galaxies of the same BH mass---suggesting a higher nuclear stellar density. We identify a region in Sersic index and BH mass parameter space that contains ~2% of our reference catalog galaxies but  ⁣60%\ge\!60\% of TDE host galaxies. The unique photometric properties of TDE host galaxies may be useful for selecting candidate TDEs for spectroscopic follow-up observations in large transient surveys.Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. A Three-Step Synthesis of Hydrogenated Tamoxifen

    Get PDF
Tamoxifen is an active molecule that is used to treat estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer in both men and women. Estrogen-receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer is where the cancer cells’ growth is promoted by the presence of estrogen. Tamoxifen is an antagonist of the estrogen receptors in the breast tissue because it blocks the receptors, preventing cancer growth. Three steps were taken to synthesize hydrogenated tamoxifen. First, 1-phenyl-1-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-2-phenylbut-1-ene was synthesized from 4-hydroxybenzophenone and propiophenone, using THF as a solvent. Then, the product was amino alkylated to synthesize E and Z isomers of tamoxifen, to which it was hydrogenated to produce our final product, hydrogenated tamoxifen. In order to make this process more green 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-meTHF) was used in place of THF wherever possible

Quantifying radar-rainfall uncertainties in urban drainage flow modelling

    Get PDF
AbstractThis work presents the results of the implementation of a probabilistic system to model the uncertainty associated to radar rainfall (RR) estimates and the way this uncertainty propagates through the sewer system of an urban area located in the North of England. The spatial and temporal correlations of the RR errors as well as the error covariance matrix were computed to build a RR error model able to generate RR ensembles that reproduce the uncertainty associated with the measured rainfall. The results showed that the RR ensembles provide important information about the uncertainty in the rainfall measurement that can be propagated in the urban sewer system. The results showed that the measured flow peaks and flow volumes are often bounded within the uncertainty area produced by the RR ensembles. In 55% of the simulated events, the uncertainties in RR measurements can explain the uncertainties observed in the simulated flow volumes. However, there are also some events where the RR uncertainty cannot explain the whole uncertainty observed in the simulated flow volumes indicating that there are additional sources of uncertainty that must be considered such as the uncertainty in the urban drainage model structure, the uncertainty in the urban drainage model calibrated parameters, and the uncertainty in the measured sewer flows

The role of critical experiences, positioning, and agency in the dynamic, emergent construction of heritage speaker selves

Previous research has proposed a crucial role for critical experiences in language learning to better understand how learners understand and discursively construct their self-concept (Mercer, 2011, 2016; Serafini, 2020a; Thompson, 2020). However, studies have mainly explored critical experiences in the narratives of foreign language learners of English with little attention to how heritage speakers of languages other than English (LOTE) draw on critical experiences in discursive constructions of self. To address this gap, this study aims to explore the impact of critical experiences in university heritage Spanish speakers’ self-narratives. Twenty heritage Spanish students completed a background questionnaire and peer-facilitated, video-recorded interview. Emergent, recurring themes were identified in transcribed interview data following tenets of grounded theory (Charmaz, 2006; Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Findings underscore the key role of positioning (Davies & Harré, 1990) in dynamic conceptions of self, particularly how heritage speakers (re)imagine and discursively construct past, current, and future self-states. Positioning was also linked to agency (Ahearn, 2001) in relation to students’ critical reflections on experiences of racialization and resistance to, or reproduction of, dominant language ideologies. Overall, the study provides valuable insights for (heritage) language educators seeking to enact critical pedagogical principles in their classroom and curriculum
