Sub 20 nm Short Channel Carbon Nanotube Transistors

Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors with sub 20 nm long channels and on/off current ratios of > 1000000 are demonstrated. Individual single-walled carbon nanotubes with diameters ranging from 0.7 nm to 1.1 nm grown from structured catalytic islands using chemical vapor deposition at 700 degree Celsius form the channels. Electron beam lithography and a combination of HSQ, calix[6]arene and PMMA e-beam resists were used to structure the short channels and source and drain regions. The nanotube transistors display on-currents in excess of 15 microA for drain-source biases of only 0.4 Volt.Comment: Nano Letters in pres

Tetraethyleneglycol diacrylate (TTEGDA)-crosslinked polystyrene resin as an efficient solid support for gel phase peptide synthesis

    Get PDF
Various applications of the newly developed tetraethyleneglycol diacrylate (TTEGDA)-crosslinked polystyrene resin are illustrated by the synthesis of model peptides, fully protected peptides, peptide amides and biologically important sequences. PS-TTEGDA resin was prepared by suspension polymerization of styrene and TTEGDA and functionalized with chloromethyl, 4-cholromethyl-3-nitro, aminomethyl, α-bromopropionyl, α-aminopropionyl, 4-bromomethyl 3-nitrobenzamido, 4-aminomethyl-3-nitrobenzamido groups. Peptide synthesis was carried out using these modified resins by standard solid phase methodology. Coupling and deprotection in this synthetic strategy went to near completion showing the positive role of hydrophilic and flexible crosslinking agent TTEGDA in facilitating gelphase reactions. The peptides were removed from the support by photolysis, trifluoroaceticacid (TFA) treatment,trans-esterification or ammonolysis in high purity and yield. The crude peptides were purified by column chromatography/FPLC and characterized by aminoacid analysis, sequencing or 1H-NMR

Ecology of Indian estuaries-XI. A preliminary survey of the fishery resources of the Ashtamudi estuarine system

    Get PDF
The fish fauna of the Ashtamudi, the second largest estuarine system in Kerala (8°53'-9°02' N Lat. and 76°31'-76°41' E Long.) is listed. 97 species belonging to 39 families have been recorded, ofwhich69 are commercially important contributing to the fisheries of the Ashtamudi Estuary. Mullets, cichlids and the glassy perchlets are the most abundant groups and contribute appreciably to the landings. Results revealed that the estuarine system supports a good capture fishery which is seasonal. Majority of the fish fauna in the estuary are marine elements recruited from the adjoining Arabian Sea. An inventory of the craft and gear employed is presented and the sources of pollution in the estuarine system are described, aquacultural prospects of this area are discussed

Functional characterization of the phospholipase C activity of Rv3487c and its localization on the cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

    Get PDF
Mycobacterium tuberculosis survives and persists for prolonged periods within its host in an asymptomatic, latent state and can reactivate years later if the host's immune system weakens. The dormant bacilli synthesize and accumulate triacylglycerol, reputed to be an energy source during latency. Among the phospholipases, phospholipase C plays an important role in the pathogenesis. Mutations in a known phospholipase C, plcC, of M. tuberculosis attenuate its growth during the late phase of infection in mice. Hydrolysis of phospholipids by phospholipase C generates diacylglycerol, a well-known signalling molecule that participates in the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK) through protein kinase C leading to macrophage activation. In the present study, we show that M. tuberculosis possesses an additional cell wall-associated protein, Rv3487c, with phospholipase C activity. The recombinant Rv3487c hydrolyses the substrate phosphatidylcholine and generates diacylglycerol by removing the phosphocholine. Furthermore, Rv3487c is expressed during infection as it exhibits significant humoral immunoreactivity with sera from children with tuberculosis, but not with that from adult patients

Coupling of a single-photon emitter in nanodiamond to surface plasmons of a nanochannel-enclosed silver nanowire

A finite element method is applied to study the coupling between a nitrogen vacancy (NV) single photon emitter in nanodiamond and surface plasmons in a silver nanowire embedded in an alumina nanochannel template. We investigate the effective parameters in the coupled system and present detailed optimization for the maximum transmitted power at a selected optical frequency (650 nm). The studied parameters include nanowire length, nanowire diameter, distance between the dipole and the nanowire, orientation of the emitter and refractive index of the surrounding. It is found that the diameter of the nanowire has a strong influence on the propagation of the surface plasmon polaritons and emission power from the bottom and top endings of the nanowire. © 2014 Optical Society of America
