Palm oil mill contributed a significant benefit to agro-based industry and social-economic for Malaysia. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is considered as a polluted wastewater and the treated POME sludge was produced from the open treatment ponds. The objective of this study was to determine the physicochemical characteristics of treated POME sludge and its potential as an organic fertilizer. It was collected from the dumping ponds in Felda Jengka 8, palm oil mill. Physicochemical characteristics, sampling and preparation of samples were analyzed according to the standard method of soil and the wastewater. The samples were collected after one and six month of age with different depths (one, two and three meters). The statistical analysis revealed that the depth was not significant on the physicochemical characteristics. The characteristics of the treated POME sludge was measures using CHNS-O, C/N ratio, solid analysis, heavy metal, macro and micronutrient, moisture content, and pH. However, the elements of oxygen, iron and pH were shown an interaction effects with time. In conclusion, the treated POME sludge has shown significant effect and the potential used as an organic fertilizer. Indeed, further studies on crops response are being conducted to prove the findings

Malaysia is known to be one of the largest palm oil producers and also generates huge amounts of oil palm biomass, which is mainly treated as bio waste. One of the efficient methods to recycle this potential oil palm biomass could be gasification technology. Gasification is a process involving conversion of solid carbonaceous fuel into combustible gas using directly heated biomass. From processing of Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) (a biomass example), Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) fibre, shell etc. are produced. In this study, a laboratory scale fluidized bed was developed, an appropriate fibre/shell composition ratio was studied and analysis on profiles of gas produced in the oil palm biomass fluidized bed gasifier was conducted. The effects of fibre/shell composition ratio and rate of reaction on temperature profiles were investigated. Temperature reaction rate and calorific value of oil palm biomass with gas compositions were also analyzed

Introduction: Health care workers (HCW) are constantly exposed to blood-borne illnesses through needle stick injuries (NSI). Despite the increasing trend of NSI, evidence regarding the actual practice of universal precautions among these HCWs is lacking. This study assessed the practice of universal precautions towards prevention of NSI among HCWs in a teaching hospital setting. Methods: This cross-sectional survey involved a newly-designed self-completed questionnaire assessing demographic data, exposure to NSI and practice of universal precautions. Questionnaires were distributed to every ward and completed questionnaires were collected after a period of 7 days. Results: A total of 215 HCWs responded to the survey. 35.8% were exposed to bodily fluid, with 22.3% had NSI in the last 12 months. Blood taking was the commonest procedure associated with NSI. Of practices of universal precautions, recapping needle and removing needle from syringe were still wrongly practiced by the HCWs assessed. Conclusion: NSI among HCW are still common despite the introduction of universal precautions in our hospital. Incorrect practices in handling sharps should be looked into in order to reduce the incidence of blood-borne illnesses through NSI in the hospital

Double-porosity is an important feature in soil due to its influence on the migration of fluids within the soil. Conventional ways of measuring fluid saturation involves intrusive use of equipment that may disturb the original setting of the sample being measured. The use of image analysis has overcome this problem but has rarely been applied in research concerning double-porosity soil media. The study presented in this article applies image analysis to study the migration of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) in soil with double-porosoity features. In this study, the laboratory experiments were conducted in a three-dimensional rectangular acrylic model and images were acquired using the photographic technique. Immiscible NAPL was chosen as the fluid applied as it is relatively less studied in double-porosity media compared to miscible contaminants. Aggregated kaolin was used as the double-porosity soil samples. Image analysis was utilized to observe the migration of the NAPL based on migration area coverage, the optical saturation of the NAPL as well as the intensity of the NAPL during migration. The experiments were performed over a range of different moisture content contained in the aggregated soil samples and the effect of different soil moisture content on the migration of NAPL in double-porosity soil was analyzed. The experimental results showed that the rate of NAPL migration will increase as the moisture content increases. In summary, image analysis was found to be a viable method in observing and visualizing the migration of NAPL based on optical saturation, intensity, and area invaded by NAPL in double-porosity soil

This study examined numericallythe Thermal-hydrodynamic properties of airflow in the fin-and-tube compact heat exchangers (FTCHEs) with considering different shapes of tubes in lowReynoldsnumbers. The influence of applying flat, oval and circular tube adjustments on the thermal and hydraulic characteristics of air flow were analyzed on the in-line tube arrangements. Establishing standard conditions, the study compared different geometries based on circular tubes of 10.459 mm diameter tubes with 25.4 mm longitudinal pitches and 25.4 mm transverse pitches. The other geometries of tubes were assumed in a stable and constant state preparing the same heat transfer surface area per unit volume as that of the nominal case. The results showed that the FTCHE with flat tubes gives the best area goodness factor (j/f) with in a certainrange of Reynoldsnumbers. In addition, FTCHE with flat tubes shown the best thermo-hydraulic performance and a significant augmentation of up to 10.83% and 35.63% in the average area goodness factor achieved accompanied by a decrease in the average friction factor of 17.02% and 43.41% in the flat tube case compared to the oval and circle tube shapes, respectively. It is concluded that the average area goodness factorfor the oval tube is about 25.04% higher than that of the circular tube, while the average friction factor for the oval tube is about 26.9% lower than that of the circular tube. This means that the flat tube has a better-combined thermal-hydraulic performance than the oval and circle tube

Eighteen clinically healthy dogs weighing 10-15 kg body weight were used in this study over a 20-day period. They were allocated randomly into 3 groups of 6 animals each. After the creation of 5 cm x 5cm open wound, Group I was control treated with Gentamycin ointment. Groups II and ill were treated with keratin-gelatin and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)-gelatin composite film respectively. On application, the keratin-gelatin and bFGF-gelatin composite film were well accepted by the animals without any adverse reaction. On clinical examination, Group II showed bright beefy red color granulation tissue with angiogenesis when compared to Groups I and ill. On bacteriological examination, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, Proteus and Klebsiella species were isolated from all the groups. Mean percentage of epithelialisation, wound contraction and total healing were significantly better in Group II (P<0.05). Keratin is a biocompatible protein which does not interfere with the body's normal immunologic response and therefore it can be used in extensive wounds and also in non healing chronic wounds which need a trigger to stimulate the normal healing process. In extensive wounds when there is lack of autologous tissue, biomaterials like keratin-gelatin may be beneficial and can be used
