Declarative Event-Based Workflow as Distributed Dynamic Condition Response Graphs

    Get PDF
We present Dynamic Condition Response Graphs (DCR Graphs) as a declarative, event-based process model inspired by the workflow language employed by our industrial partner and conservatively generalizing prime event structures. A dynamic condition response graph is a directed graph with nodes representing the events that can happen and arrows representing four relations between events: condition, response, include, and exclude. Distributed DCR Graphs is then obtained by assigning roles to events and principals. We give a graphical notation inspired by related work by van der Aalst et al. We exemplify the use of distributed DCR Graphs on a simple workflow taken from a field study at a Danish hospital, pointing out their flexibility compared to imperative workflow models. Finally we provide a mapping from DCR Graphs to Buchi-automata.Comment: In Proceedings PLACES 2010, arXiv:1110.385

R.A.Fisher, design theory, and the Indian connection

    Get PDF
Design Theory, a branch of mathematics, was born out of the experimental statistics research of the population geneticist R. A. Fisher and of Indian mathematical statisticians in the 1930s. The field combines elements of combinatorics, finite projective geometries, Latin squares, and a variety of further mathematical structures, brought together in surprising ways. This essay will present these structures and ideas as well as how the field came together, in itself an interesting story.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

Processing of leather using deep eutectic solvents

Processing of leather has an historical reputation as a chemically and energetically intensive process that produces large volumes of aqueous waste. Saline pollution combined with heavy-metal, dyes and acid and base streams make leather production an ecologically sensitive industry. The current study shows that a variety of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) may be used for the tanning, fatliquoring and dyeing of animal hides, being particularly useful for mineral (chromium) and vegetable tanning processes. The tanning agents are able to penetrate rapidly into the hide, driven by lyotropic swelling due to their high ionic strength. The samples are shown to have similar tanning agent content to the currently used aqueous chromium(III) sulfate solution; however, the waste metal content is shown to be significantly reduced. Incorporation of the DES Ethaline into the leather significantly alters the swelling properties of the leather increasing the flexibility and ductility of the material, therefore acting in the same manner as a fatliquor that lubricates or plasticizes the fibrous structure of the collagen. Ethaline was also used to transport a lysochromic dye throughout the cross section of the leather, and the hydrophobicity of the dye prevents leaching into the aqueous wash solution. Physical measurements show that leather processed using DESs have similar mechanical properties to that processed using conventional aqueous systems

Application of rare earth salts for permanent stabilization of skin

135-139This study presents utility of rare earth metal salts with and without separation for bringing about a permanent stabilization of skin tanning. Hydrolytic stability, physico-chemical characteristics etc. have been evaluated. Combination tanning systems have also been worked out. Study indicates a potential use of rare earths salts for tanning, even without separation

Champions For Social Good: How Can We Discover Social Sentiment and Attitude-Driven Patterns in Prosocial Communication?

    Get PDF
The UN High Commissioner on Refugees pursues a social media strategy to inform people about displaced populations and refugee emergencies. It actively engages public figures so its prosocial communications can promote greater awareness. This improves social informedness and support for policy changes in its services. We study social media champions’ Twitter communications and roles as high-profile influencers. We offer a design science research and data analytics framework and propositions based on social informedness theory to assess communication about the UNHCR’s mission. Two variables, refugee-emergency and champion type, relate to UNHCR champions’ followers’ informedness. Based on a Twitter sentiment and attitude corpus, we apply a five-step design science analytics framework involving machine learning and natural language processing to test emergency type and champion influencer impacts on patterns observed in social communication. Positive and neutral sentiment dominated the champions’ and their followers’ tweets for most refugee-emergency types. High participation-intensity champions emphasized high-intensity emergencies with dominant positive or neutral sentiment and sharing or liking attitude tweet patterns. Sports figures with millions of their followers’ effects were limited in spreading UNHCR’s message. We demonstrate the power of data science for prosocial policy based on refugee crisis awareness and instantiate our methods and knowledge contributions in a research framework deriving knowledge, decisions and actions based on behavioral, design and economics of information systems (IS) perspectives

The pollution load on the environment due to increased chrome tanning activity has received much attention in India. It is recognised that one of the convincing solutions to the problems of sustenance of chrome tanning rests in the reduction of discharge of chrome in the effluent through in-plant control measures and cleaner tanning practices. Better arranagement on the extent of discharge of chromium and compliance to discharge norms are the need of the hour. Here, an attempt has been made to focus issues relating to chrome tanning in India and discuss the technological means to achieve better arranagement of chrome tanning in India.</span

Effect of Nature of Alkali on the Zeta Potential, Colour and Particle Size of Chromium(III) Hydroxide

    No full text
569-574The nature of precipitant alkali is found to influence the settled volume, bulk density, particle size and zeta potential of chromic hydroxide generated. MgO when used as a precipitant alkali, gives rise to particles of higher density compared to other alkalies and hence least settled volume. The sonication influences the zeta potential of chromic hydroxide generated when MgO and NaOH are used, but no influence has been found when Na2CO3 is used. The colour of the chromic hydroxide generated varies with the nature of precipitant alkali, indicating thereby the varying degree of polymerization
