Do topical repellents divert mosquitoes within a community? Health equity implications of topical repellents as a mosquito bite prevention tool.
OBJECTIVES: Repellents do not kill mosquitoes--they simply reduce human-vector contact. Thus it is possible that individuals who do not use repellents but dwell close to repellent users experience more bites than otherwise. The objective of this study was to measure if diversion occurs from households that use repellents to those that do not use repellents. METHODS: The study was performed in three Tanzanian villages using 15%-DEET and placebo lotions. All households were given LLINs. Three coverage scenarios were investigated: complete coverage (all households were given 15%-DEET), incomplete coverage (80% of households were given 15%-DEET and 20% placebo) and no coverage (all households were given placebo). A crossover study design was used and coverage scenarios were rotated weekly over a period of ten weeks. The placebo lotion was randomly allocated to households in the incomplete coverage scenario. The level of compliance was reported to be close to 100%. Mosquito densities were measured through aspiration of resting mosquitoes. Data were analysed using negative binomial regression models. FINDINGS: Repellent-users had consistently fewer mosquitoes in their dwellings. In villages where everybody had been given 15%-DEET, resting mosquito densities were fewer than half that of households in the no coverage scenario (Incidence Rate Ratio [IRR]=0.39 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.25-0.60); p<0.001). Placebo-users living in a village where 80% of the households used 15%-DEET were likely to have over four-times more mosquitoes (IRR=4.17; 95% CI: 3.08-5.65; p<0.001) resting in their dwellings in comparison to households in a village where nobody uses repellent. CONCLUSIONS: There is evidence that high coverage of repellent use could significantly reduce man-vector contact but with incomplete coverage evidence suggests that mosquitoes are diverted from households that use repellent to those that do not. Therefore, if repellents are to be considered for vector control, strategies to maximise coverage are required

Drawing on the classic model of balanced affect, the Francis Burnout Inventory conceptualises good work-related psychological health among clergy in terms of negative affect being balanced by positive affect. This paper sets out to explore the relationship between work-related psychological health and psychological type (as assessed by the Francis Psychological-Type Scales) among a sample of 212 Australian clergywomen who completed the National Church Life Survey Form L in 2006. The data supported the internal consistency reliability of the Francis Burnout Inventory and Francis Psychological-Type Scales and found that work-related psychological health was positively related to extraversion and sensing
Supernumerary proteins of the human mitochondrial ribosomal small subunit are integral for assembly and translation
\ua9 2024 The AuthorsMitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) have undergone substantial evolutionary structural remodeling accompanied by loss of ribosomal RNA, while acquiring unique protein subunits located on the periphery. We generated CRISPR-mediated knockouts of all 14 unique (mitochondria-specific/supernumerary) human mitoribosomal proteins (snMRPs) in the small subunit to study the effect on mitoribosome assembly and protein synthesis, each leading to a unique mitoribosome assembly defect with variable impact on mitochondrial protein synthesis. Surprisingly, the stability of mS37 was reduced in all our snMRP knockouts of the small and large ribosomal subunits and patient-derived lines with mitoribosome assembly defects. A redox-regulated CX9C motif in mS37 was essential for protein stability, suggesting a potential mechanism to regulate mitochondrial protein synthesis. Together, our findings support a modular assembly of the human mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit mediated by essential supernumerary subunits and identify a redox regulatory role involving mS37 in mitochondrial protein synthesis in health and disease

Uninvited Guests: Traditional Insect Repellents in Estonia used Against the Clothes Moth Tineola bisselliella, Human Flea Pulex irritons and Bedbug Cimex lectularius
Extensive folklore records from pre-modern Estonia give us an excellent opportunity to study a variety of local plant knowledge and plant use among the peasantry in various parts of the country. One important biocultural domain where plant knowledge has been crucial was in the various methods of combating different ectoparasites that cohabited and coexisted with humans and their domestic animals. Some of these methods were widely known (world-wide, Eurasia, Europe, Baltic Rim), while others were more local. Here we discuss ways of reducing clothes moths Tineola bisselliella (Hummel) (Lepidoptera: Tineidae), human fleas Pulex irritons L. (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) and bedbugs Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) with the help of plants. Various taxa used as traditional repellents have been identified. The use of plants as repellents and their toxic principles are also discussed from a comparative perspective
Geochemical detection of carbon dioxide in dilute aquifers
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Carbon storage in deep saline reservoirs has the potential to lower the amount of CO<sub>2 </sub>emitted to the atmosphere and to mitigate global warming. Leakage back to the atmosphere through abandoned wells and along faults would reduce the efficiency of carbon storage, possibly leading to health and ecological hazards at the ground surface, and possibly impacting water quality of near-surface dilute aquifers. We use static equilibrium and reactive transport simulations to test the hypothesis that perturbations in water chemistry associated with a CO<sub>2 </sub>gas leak into dilute groundwater are important measures for the potential release of CO<sub>2 </sub>to the atmosphere. Simulation parameters are constrained by groundwater chemistry, flow, and lithology from the High Plains aquifer. The High Plains aquifer is used to represent a typical sedimentary aquifer overlying a deep CO<sub>2 </sub>storage reservoir. Specifically, we address the relationships between CO<sub>2 </sub>flux, groundwater flow, detection time and distance. The CO<sub>2 </sub>flux ranges from 10<sup>3 </sup>to 2 × 10<sup>6 </sup>t/yr (0.63 to 1250 t/m<sup>2</sup>/yr) to assess chemical perturbations resulting from relatively small leaks that may compromise long-term storage, water quality, and surface ecology, and larger leaks characteristic of short-term well failure.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>For the scenarios we studied, our simulations show pH and carbonate chemistry are good indicators for leakage of stored CO<sub>2 </sub>into an overlying aquifer because elevated CO<sub>2 </sub>yields a more acid pH than the ambient groundwater. CO<sub>2 </sub>leakage into a dilute groundwater creates a slightly acid plume that can be detected at some distance from the leak source due to groundwater flow and CO<sub>2 </sub>buoyancy. pH breakthrough curves demonstrate that CO<sub>2 </sub>leaks can be easily detected for CO<sub>2 </sub>flux ≥ 10<sup>4 </sup>t/yr within a 15-month time period at a monitoring well screened within a permeable layer 500 m downstream from the vertical gas trace. At lower flux rates, the CO<sub>2 </sub>dissolves in the aqueous phase in the lower most permeable unit and does not reach the monitoring well. Sustained pumping in a developed aquifer mixes the CO<sub>2</sub>-affected water with the ambient water and enhances pH signal for small leaks (10<sup>3 </sup>t/yr) and reduces pH signal for larger leaks (≥ 10<sup>4</sup>t/yr).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The ability to detect CO<sub>2 </sub>leakage from a storage reservoir to overlying dilute groundwater is dependent on CO<sub>2 </sub>solubility, leak flux, CO<sub>2 </sub>buoyancy, and groundwater flow. Our simulations show that the most likely places to detect CO<sub>2 </sub>are at the base of the confining layer near the water table where CO<sub>2 </sub>gas accumulates and is transported laterally in all directions, and downstream of the vertical gas trace where groundwater flow is great enough to transport dissolved CO<sub>2 </sub>laterally. Our simulations show that CO<sub>2 </sub>may not rise high enough in the aquifer to be detected because aqueous solubility and lateral groundwater transport within the lower aquifer unit exceeds gas pressure build-up and buoyancy needed to drive the CO<sub>2 </sub>gas upwards.</p
Seeking legitimacy through CSR: Institutional Pressures and Corporate Responses of Multinationals in Sri Lanka
Arguably, the corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices of multinational enterprises (MNEs) are influenced by a wide range of both internal and external factors. Perhaps most critical among the exogenous forces operating on MNEs are those exerted by state and other key institutional actors in host countries. Crucially, academic research conducted to date offers little data about how MNEs use their CSR activities to strategically manage their relationship with those actors in order to gain legitimisation advantages in host countries. This paper addresses that gap by exploring interactions between external institutional pressures and firm-level CSR activities, which take the form of community initiatives, to examine how MNEs develop their legitimacy-seeking policies and practices. In focusing on a developing country, Sri Lanka, this paper provides valuable insights into how MNEs instrumentally utilise community initiatives in a country where relationship-building with governmental and other powerful non-governmental actors can be vitally important for the long-term viability of the business. Drawing on neo-institutional theory and CSR literature, this paper examines and contributes to the embryonic but emerging debate about the instrumental and political implications of CSR. The evidence presented and discussed here reveals the extent to which, and the reasons why, MNEs engage in complex legitimacy-seeking relationships with Sri Lankan institutions
Lambda and Antilambda polarization from deep inelastic muon scattering
We report results of the first measurements of Lambda and Antilambda
polarization produced in deep inelastic polarized muon scattering on the
nucleon. The results are consistent with an expected trend towards positive
polarization with increasing x_F. The polarizations of Lambda and Antilambda
appear to have opposite signs. A large negative polarization for Lambda at low
positive x_F is observed and is not explained by existing models.A possible

Early transmission and case fatality of Ebola virus at the index site of the 2013-16 west African Ebola outbreak: a cross-sectional seroprevalence survey.
BACKGROUND: To date, epidemiological studies at the index site of the 2013-16 west African Ebola outbreak in Meliandou, Guinea, have been restricted in their scope. We aimed to determine the occurrence of previously undocumented Ebola virus disease (EVD) cases and infections, and to reconstruct transmission events. METHODS: This cross-sectional seroprevalence survey of the adult population of Meliandou used a highly specific oral fluid test and detailed interviews of all households in the village and key informants. Each household was interviewed, with all members prompted to describe the events of the outbreak, any illness within the household, and possible contact with suspected cases. Information for deceased individuals was provided by relatives living in the same household. Symptoms were based on Ebola virus Makona variant EVD case definitions (focusing on fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea). For antibody testing, we used an Ebola virus glycoprotein IgG capture enzyme immunoassay developed from a previously validated assay. A maximum exposure level was assigned to every participant using a predetermined scale. We used a generalised linear model (logit function) to estimate odds ratios for the association of sociodemographic variables and exposure level with Ebola virus infection. We adjusted estimates for age and maximum exposure, as appropriate. FINDINGS: Between June 22, and July 9, 2017, we enrolled 237 participants from 27 households in Meliandou. Two households refused to participate and one was absent. All adults in participating households who were present for the interview provided an oral fluid swab for testing, of which 224 were suitable for analysis. In addition to the 11 EVD deaths described previously, on the basis of clinical description and oral fluid testing, we found two probable EVD deaths and eight previously unrecognised anti-Ebola virus IgG-positive survivors, including one who had mild symptoms and one who was asymptomatic, resulting in a case fatality of 55·6% (95% CI 30·8-78·5) for adults. Health-care work (adjusted odds ratio 6·64, 1·54-28·56; p=0·001) and level of exposure (odds ratio adjusted for linear trend across five levels 2·79, 1·59-4·883; p<0·0001) were independent risk factors for infection. INTERPRETATION: Ebola virus infection was more widespread in this spillover population than previously recognised (21 vs 11 cases). We show the first serological evidence of survivors in this population (eight anti-Ebola virus IgG seropositive) and report a case fatality lower than previously reported (55·6% vs 100% in adults). These data show the high community coverage achievable by using a non-invasive test and, by accurately documenting the beginnings of the west African Ebola virus outbreak, reveal important insight into transmission dynamics and risk factors that underpin Ebola virus spillover events.
