Constrained by managerialism : caring as participation in the voluntary social services
The data in this study show that care is a connective process, underlying and motivating participation and as a force that compels involvement in the lives of others, care is at least a micro-participative process. Care or affinity not only persisted in the face of opposition, but it was also used by workers as a counter discourse and set of practices with which to resist the erosion of worker participation and open up less autonomized practices and ways of connecting with fellow staff, clients and the communities they served. The data suggest that while managerialism and taylorised practice models may remove or reduce opportunities for worker participation, care is a theme or storyline that gave workers other ways to understand their work and why they did it, as well as ways they were prepared to resist managerial priorities and directives, including the erosion of various kinds of direct and indirect participation. The degree of resistance possible, even in the highly technocratic worksite in Australia, shows that cracks and fissures exist within managerialism
Supporting learnersâ agentic engagement with feedback:a systematic review and a taxonomy of recipience processes
Much has been written in the educational psychology literature about effective feedback and how to deliver it. However, it is equally important to understand how learners actively receive, engage with, and implement feedback. This article reports a systematic review of the research evidence pertaining to this issue. Through an analysis of 195 outputs published between 1985 and early 2014, we identified various factors that have been proposed to influence the likelihood of feedback being used. Furthermore, we identified diverse interventions with the common aim of supporting and promoting learners' agentic engagement with feedback processes. We outline the various components used in these interventions, and the reports of their successes and limitations. Moreover we propose a novel taxonomy of four recipience processes targeted by these interventions. This review and taxonomy provide a theoretical basis for conceptualizing learners' responsibility within feedback dialogues and for guiding the strategic design and evaluation of interventions. Receiving feedback on one's skills and understanding is an invaluable part of the learning process, benefiting learners far more than does simply receiving praise or punishment (Black & Wiliam, 1998 Black, P., & Wiliam, D. Inevitably, the benefits of receiving feedback are not uniform across all circumstances, and so it is imperative to understand how these gains can be maximized. There is increasing consensus that a critical determinant of feedback effectiveness is the quality of learners' engagement with, and use of, the feedback they receive. However, studies investigating this engagement are underrepresented in academic research (Bounds et al., 2013 Bounds, R., Bush, C., Aghera, A., Rodriguez, N., Stansfield, R. B., & Santeen, S. A. (2013). Emergency medicine residents' self-assessments play a critical role when receiving feedback. With this blind spot in mind, the present work sets out to systematically map the research literature concerning learners' proactive recipience of feedback. We use the term âproactive recipienceâ here to connote a state or activity of engaging actively with feedback processes, thus emphasizing the fundamental contribution and responsibility of the learner (Winstone, Nash, Rowntree, & Parker, in press Winstone, N. Relativistic effects and two-body currents in using out-of-plane detection
Measurements of the reaction were performed
using an 800-MeV polarized electron beam at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator
and with the out-of-plane magnetic spectrometers (OOPS). The
longitudinal-transverse, and , and the
transverse-transverse, , interference responses at a missing momentum
of 210 MeV/c were simultaneously extracted in the dip region at Q=0.15
(GeV/c). On comparison to models of deuteron electrodisintegration, the
data clearly reveal strong effects of relativity and final-state interactions,
and the importance of the two-body meson-exchange currents and isobar
configurations. We demonstrate that these effects can be disentangled and
studied by extracting the interference response functions using the novel

Measurement of the Transverse-Longitudinal Cross Sections in the p (e,e'p)pi0 Reaction in the Delta Region
Accurate measurements of the p(e,e?p)pi0 reaction were performed at
Q^2=0.127(GeV/c)^2 in the Delta resonance energy region. The experiments at the
MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator used an 820 MeV polarized electron beam with the
out of plane magnetic spectrometer system (OOPS). In this paper we report the
first simultaneous determination of both the TL and TL? (``fifth" or polarized)
cross sections at low Q^{2} where the pion cloud contribution dominates the
quadrupole amplitudes (E2 and C2). The real and imaginary parts of the
transverse-longitudinal cross section provide both a sensitive determination of
the Coulomb quadrupole amplitude and a test of reaction calculations.
Comparisons with model calculations are presented. The empirical MAID
calculation gives the best overall agreement with this accurate data. The
parameters of this model for the values of the resonant multipoles are
|M_{1+}(I=3/2)|= (40.9 \pm 0.3)10^{-3}/m_pi, CMR= C2/M1= -6.5 \pm 0.3%,
EMR=E2/M1=-2.2 \pm 0.9%, where the errors are due to the experimental

The Q^2 evolution of the generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron using a He-3 target
We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a
polarized He-3 target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a
scattering angle of 15.5 degrees. Our data include measurements from the
quasielastic peak, through the resonance region, to the beginning of the deep
inelastic regime, and were used to determine the spin difference in the virtual
photoabsorption cross section. We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn
integral for the neutron in the range of 4-momentum transfer squared Q^2 of
0.1-0.9 GeV.Comment: 14 pages of text when TeXed in preprint format with figures embedded.

Photoproduction of phi(1020) mesons on the proton at large momentum transfer
The cross section for meson photoproduction on the proton has been
measured for the first time up to a four-momentum transfer -t = 4 GeV^2, using
the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. At low
four-momentum transfer, the differential cross section is well described by
Pomeron exchange. At large four-momentum transfer, above -t = 1.8 GeV^2, the
data support a model where the Pomeron is resolved into its simplest component,
two gluons, which may couple to any quark in the proton and in the .Comment: 5 pages; 7 figure
Polarization transfer in the d(epol,e' ppol)n reaction up to Q^2=1.61 (GeV/c)^2
The recoil proton polarization was measured in the d(epol,e' ppol)n reaction
in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The
electron kinematics were centered on the quasielastic peak (x_{Bj}~1) and
included three values of the squared four-momentum transfer, Q^2=0.43, 1.00 and
1.61 (GeV/c)^2. For Q^2=0.43 and 1.61 (GeV/c)^2, the missing momentum, p_m, was
centered at zero while for Q^2=1.00 (GeV/c)^2 two values of p_m were chosen: 0
and 174 MeV/c. At low p_m, the Q^2 dependence of the longitudinal polarization,
P_z', is not well described by a state-of-the-art calculation. Further, at
higher p_m, a 3.5 sigma discrepancy was observed in the transverse
polarization, P_x'. Understanding the origin of these discrepancies is
important in order to confidently extract the neutron electric form factor from
the analogous d(epol,e' npol)p experiment.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; updated text, figures and table
Dependence of Quadrupole Strength in the Transition
Models of baryon structure predict a small quadrupole deformation of the
nucleon due to residual tensor forces between quarks or distortions from the
pion cloud. Sensitivity to quark versus pion degrees of freedom occurs through
the dependence of the magnetic (), electric (), and
scalar () multipoles in the
transition. We report new experimental values for the ratios
and over the range = 0.4-1.8 GeV, extracted from
precision data using a truncated multipole expansion.
Results are best described by recent unitary models in which the pion cloud
