Analytical continuum mechanics \`a la Hamilton-Piola: least action principle for second gradient continua and capillary fluids
In this paper a stationary action principle is proven to hold for capillary
fluids, i.e. fluids for which the deformation energy has the form suggested,
starting from molecular arguments, for instance by Cahn and Hilliard. Remark
that these fluids are sometimes also called Korteweg-de Vries or Cahn-Allen. In
general continua whose deformation energy depend on the second gradient of
placement are called second gradient (or Piola-Toupin or Mindlin or
Green-Rivlin or Germain or second gradient) continua. In the present paper, a
material description for second gradient continua is formulated. A Lagrangian
action is introduced in both material and spatial description and the
corresponding Euler-Lagrange bulk and boundary conditions are found. These
conditions are formulated in terms of an objective deformation energy volume
density in two cases: when this energy is assumed to depend on either C and
grad C or on C^-1 and grad C^-1 ; where C is the Cauchy-Green deformation
tensor. When particularized to energies which characterize fluid materials, the
capillary fluid evolution conditions (see e.g. Casal or Seppecher for an
alternative deduction based on thermodynamic arguments) are recovered. A
version of Bernoulli law valid for capillary fluids is found and, in the
Appendix B, useful kinematic formulas for the present variational formulation
are proposed. Historical comments about Gabrio Piola's contribution to
continuum analytical mechanics are also presented. In this context the reader

Band gaps in the relaxed linear micromorphic continuum
In this note we show that the relaxed linear micromorphic model recently
proposed by the authors can be suitably used to describe the presence of
band-gaps in metamaterials with microstructures in which strong contrasts of
the mechanical properties are present (e.g. phononic crystals and lattice
structures). This relaxed micromorphic model only has 6 constitutive parameters
instead of 18 parameters needed in Mindlin- and Eringen-type classical
micromorphic models. We show that the onset of band-gaps is related to a unique
constitutive parameter, the Cosserat couple modulus which starts to
account for band-gaps when reaching a suitable threshold value. The limited
number of parameters of our model, as well as the specific effect of some of
them on wave propagation can be seen as an important step towards indirect
measurement campaigns
Transverse surface waves on a cylindrical surface with coating
We discuss the propagation of transverse surface waves that are so-called whispering-gallery waves along a surface of an elastic cylinder with coating. The coating is modelled in the framework of linearized Gurtin–Murdoch surface elasticity. Other interpretations of the surface shear modulus are given and relations to so-called stiff interface and stiff skin model are discussed. The dispersion relations are obtained and analyzed
A Framework for Establishing Restoration Goals for Contaminated Ecosystems
This article represents 1 of 6 articles in the special series “Restoration of Impaired Ecosystems: An Ounce of Prevention or a Pound of Cure?” The articles result from a Technical Workshop organized by SETAC and the Society for Ecological Restoration, held June 2014 in Jackson, Wyoming, that focused on advancing the practice of restoring ecosystems that have been contaminated or impaired from industrial activities.As natural resources become increasingly limited, the value of restoring contaminated sites, both terrestrial and aquatic, becomes increasingly apparent. Traditionally, goals for remediation have been set before any consideration of goals for ecological restoration. The goals for remediation have focused on removing or limiting contamination whereas restoration goals have targeted the ultimate end use. Here, we present a framework for developing a comprehensive set of achievable goals for ecological restoration of contaminated sites to be used in concert with determining goals for remediation. This framework was developed during a Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and Society of Ecological Restoration (SER) cosponsored workshop that brought together experts from multiple countries. Although most members were from North America, this framework is designed for use internationally. We discuss the integration of establishing goals for both contaminant remediation and overall restoration, and the need to include both the restoration of ecological and socio-cultural-economic value in the context of contaminated sites. Although recognizing that in some countries there may be regulatory issues associated with contaminants and clean up, landscape setting and social drivers can inform the restoration goals. We provide a decision tree support tool to guide the establishment of restoration goals for contaminated ecosystems. On the generality of the effect of experiencing prior gains and losses on the Iowa gambling task: A study on young and old adults
Prospect Theory predicts that people tend to be more risk seeking if their reference point is perceived as a loss and more risk averse when the reference point is perceived as a gain. In line with this prediction, Franken, Georgieva, Muris and Dijksterhuis (2006) showed that young adults who had a prior experience of monetary gains make more safe choices on subsequent decisions than subjects who had an early experience of losses. There are no experimental studies on how experiencing prior gains and losses differently influences young and older adults on a subsequent decision-making task (the Iowa Gambling Task). Hence, in the current paper, adapting the methodology employed by Franken et al.’s (2006), we intended to test the generality of their effect across the life span. Overall, we found that subjects who experienced prior monetary gains or prior monetary losses did not display significant differences in safe/risky choices on subsequent performance in the Iowa Gambling task. Furthermore, the impact of prior gains and losses on risky/safe card selection did not significantly differ between young and older adults. These results showed that the effect found in the Franken et al.’s study (2006) is limited in its generality
Adherence to the mediterranean diet in association with self-perception of diet sustainability, anthropometric and sociodemographic factors: A cross-sectional study in italian adults
The adoption of sustainable dietary models, such as the Mediterranean Diet (MD), can be a valuable strategy to preserve ecosystems and human health. This study aims to investigate in an Italian adult representative sample the adherence to the MD and to what extent it is associated with the self-perceived adoption of a sustainable diet, the consideration of the MD as a sustainable dietary model, and anthropometric and sociodemographic factors. By applying an online survey (n = 838, 18–65 years, 52% female), an intermediate level of MD adherence (median: 4.0, IR: 3.0–4.0) in a 0–9 range was observed. Only 50% of the total sample confirmed the MD as a sustainable dietary model, and 84% declared no or low perception of adopting a sustainable diet. Being female, having a higher income and education level, considering the MD as a sustainable dietary model, as well as the perception of having a sustainable diet were the most relevant factors influencing the probability of having a high score (≥6) of adherence to the MD. This study suggests a gradual shift away from the MD in Italy and supports the need to address efforts for developing intervention strategies tailored to adults for improving diet quality. Furthermore, a public campaign should stress the link between a diet and its environmental impact to foster nutritionally adequate and eco-friendly dietary behaviors

Calcium intake from different food sources in Italian women without and with non-previously diagnosed osteoporosis
An adequate calcium and vitamin D intake may play a role in preventing osteoporosis, but the contribution of the different food sources of calcium with regards to the risk of osteoporosis been barely explored. This observational study evaluated the calcium intake through a food frequency questionnaire in 126 adult women with not previously diagnosed osteoporosis undergoing Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) to screen for osteoporosis, and to correlate the calcium intake with parameters of bone density, measured by DXA. Total daily calcium intake and daily intake from food were similar among women found to have osteoporosis, osteopenia or normal condition. The main food source was milk and dairy products, while calcium supplementation was consumed by only 14% of subjects, irrespectively from osteoporosis conditions. DXA parameters were not significantly correlated with total daily calcium intake and calcium from food. The present study highlighted no qualitative and quantitative differences in the consumption of food groups contributing to calcium intakes in women with and without osteoporosis
