The role of perceived efficacy and sensorial expectations
Simão, S. A. V., Rohden, S. F., & Pinto, D. C. (2022). Natural claims and sustainability: The role of perceived efficacy and sensorial expectations. Sustainable Production and Consumption, 34(November), 505-517. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.spc.2022.09.026Natural claims have been increasingly used by brands across a variety of product categories to address the growing concerns about sustainable and healthy consumption. To add insights to this body of knowledge, this research aims to investigate the influence of natural claims on consumers' judgments and purchase intentions of personal care products. Findings from two studies suggest that natural claims are broadly used in personal care product packaging to influence consumers' purchase intentions, due to the natural-is-better bias and the health halos evoked by such claims. This research also contributes to the literature by investigating the underlying mechanisms of perceived efficacy, safety, sensorial expectations, and greenwashing perceptions. Moreover, environmental consciousness moderates the effects of natural claims on consumers' judgments of perceived efficacy. The findings thus not only enhance our understanding of the natural-is-better bias but also shed light on the role played by perceived safety and sensorial expectations on intentions to purchase natural-claimed products. Relevant implications for brands and policymakers in terms of sustainable consumption are also discussed.publishersversionpublishe
consumers’ feelings due Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil and potential implications for services marketing
Terres, M. D. S., Rohden, S. F., & Sebastião, L. V. (2024). COVID-sumers: consumers’ feelings due Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil and potential implications for services marketing. International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Marketing. https://doi.org/10.1108/IJPHM-04-2022-0034Purpose: The changes in the service context due to COVID-19 have challenged service marketers to understand and react to consumers’ feelings that impact their shopping behavior in services. Moreover, consumers had to face a challenging situation with an impact on mental health. This study aims to assess the impact of spirituality and compassionate love as coping mechanisms that might increase hope, which, in turn, decreases anxiety. Hope also mitigates the impact of fear on anxiety. The authors also investigate the mediate effect of hope in its relationship to spirituality and well-being during the pandemic in Brazil and its potential impact on services marketing. Design/methodology/approach: To investigate the relationship between fear, anxiety, hope, compassionate love, spirituality and well-being, the authors conducted an online survey with 469 Brazilians who had been in quarantine for more than 45 days. To conduct the investigation, the authors used a purposive sampling to reach respondents due to the exceptional situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings: Using a structural equation model, the authors found that hope is a mediator with a buffer effect on the relationships between anxiety and fear and between spirituality and anxiety. Moreover, the authors found that hope mediates the relationship between spirituality and well-being, leading to greater levels of well-being. Service companies in general can benefit from using these findings to better manage their relationships with consumers during and after COVID-19 pandemic. Research limitations/implications: The sample included only Brazilian respondents, and pre-pandemic well-being was not measured. Originality/value: There is evidence that traumatic events (e.g. war) influence feelings and consumer behavior. The findings suggest that the adoption of practices related to spirituality during an extreme, stressful situation has an influence on people’s hope and potentially mitigates anxiety. Increasing spirituality and hope can also benefit perceptions of well-being. Besides, in this context, the authors recommend that service providers communicate unobservable elements in a transaction (e.g. care, safety) by providing observable signals of spirituality and hope to reduce negative emotions.authorsversionepub_ahead_of_prin
Desvendando Sexos, Produzindo Gêneros E Medicamentos: A Promoção Das Descobertas Científicas Em Torno Da Ocitocina
Given the relationship between gender and science in the broad context of medicalization of male and female sexuality, this article discusses the promotion of oxytocin as a new technological artifact that is capable of commanding explanations of both supposed biological differences between the sexes and expectations for individual betterment. The research focuses on the dissemination of scientific discoveries about oxytocin in different media vehicles in Brazil. It presents how the celebration of oxytocin as a central component of a biochemistry of love is part of a broader process of fabricating two distinct and complementary hormonal bodies, which are at the service of reproduction. © 2016, Universidade Estadual de Campinas UNICAMP. Dynamics of fully coupled rotators with unimodal and bimodal frequency distribution
We analyze the synchronization transition of a globally coupled network of N
phase oscillators with inertia (rotators) whose natural frequencies are
unimodally or bimodally distributed. In the unimodal case, the system exhibits
a discontinuous hysteretic transition from an incoherent to a partially
synchronized (PS) state. For sufficiently large inertia, the system reveals the
coexistence of a PS state and of a standing wave (SW) solution. In the bimodal
case, the hysteretic synchronization transition involves several states.
Namely, the system becomes coherent passing through traveling waves (TWs), SWs
and finally arriving to a PS regime. The transition to the PS state from the SW
occurs always at the same coupling, independently of the system size, while its
value increases linearly with the inertia. On the other hand the critical
coupling required to observe TWs and SWs increases with N suggesting that in
the thermodynamic limit the transition from incoherence to PS will occur
without any intermediate states. Finally a linear stability analysis reveals
that the system is hysteretic not only at the level of macroscopic indicators,
but also microscopically as verified by measuring the maximal Lyapunov
exponent.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, contribution for the book: Control of

Further investigation of confirmed urinary tract infection (UTI) in children under five years: a systematic review.
Background: Further investigation of confirmed UTI in children aims to prevent renal scarring and future complications. Methods: We conducted a systematic review to determine the most effective approach to the further investigation of confirmed urinary tract infection (UTI) in children under five years of age. Results: 73 studies were included. Many studies had methodological limitations or were poorly reported. Effectiveness of further investigations: One study found that routine imaging did not lead to a reduction in recurrent UTIs or renal scarring. Diagnostic accuracy: The studies do not support the use of less invasive tests such as ultrasound as an alternative to renal scintigraphy, either to rule out infection of the upper urinary tract (LR- = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.47, 0.68) and thus to exclude patients from further investigation or to detect renal scarring (LR+ = 3.5, 95% CI: 2.5, 4.8). None of the tests investigated can accurately predict the development of renal scarring. The available evidence supports the consideration of contrast-enhanced ultrasound techniques for detecting vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR), as an alternative to micturating cystourethrography (MCUG) (LR+ = 14.1, 95% CI: 9.5, 20.8; LR- = 0.20, 95%CI: 0.13, 0.29); these techniques have the advantage of not requiring exposure to ionising radiation. Conclusion: There is no evidence to support the clinical effectiveness of routine investigation of children with confirmed UTI. Primary research on the effectiveness, in terms of improved patient outcome, of testing at all stages in the investigation of confirmed urinary tract infection is urgently required
Non-Gaussian power grid frequency fluctuations characterized by Levy-stable laws and superstatistics
Multiple types of fluctuations impact the collective dynamics of power grids and thus challenge their robust operation. Fluctuations result from processes as different as dynamically changing demands, energy trading and an increasing share of renewable power feed-in. Here we analyse principles underlying the dynamics and statistics of power grid frequency fluctuations. Considering frequency time series for a range of power grids, including grids in North America, Japan and Europe, we find a strong deviation from Gaussianity best described as Lévy-stable and q-Gaussian distributions. We present a coarse framework to analytically characterize the impact of arbitrary noise distributions, as well as a superstatistical approach that systematically interprets heavy tails and skewed distributions. We identify energy trading as a substantial contribution to today’s frequency fluctuations and effective damping of the grid as a controlling factor enabling reduction of fluctuation risks, with enhanced effects for small power grids
How does study quality affect the results of a diagnostic meta-analysis?
Background: The use of systematic literature review to inform evidence based practice in diagnostics is rapidly expanding. Although the primary diagnostic literature is extensive, studies are often of low methodological quality or poorly reported. There has been no rigorously evaluated, evidence based tool to assess the methodological quality of diagnostic studies. The primary objective of this study was to determine the extent to which variations in the quality of primary studies impact the results of a diagnostic meta-analysis and whether this differs with diagnostic test type. A secondary objective was to contribute to the evaluation of QUADAS, an evidence-based tool for the assessment of quality in diagnostic accuracy studies. Methods: This study was conducted as part of large systematic review of tests used in the diagnosis and further investigation of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children. All studies included in this review were assessed using QUADAS, an evidence-based tool for the assessment of quality in systematic reviews of diagnostic accuracy studies. The impact of individual components of QUADAS on a summary measure of diagnostic accuracy was investigated using regression analysis. The review divided the diagnosis and further investigation of UTI into the following three clinical stages: diagnosis of UTI, localisation of infection, and further investigation of the UTI. Each stage used different types of diagnostic test, which were considered to involve different quality concerns. Results: Many of the studies included in our review were poorly reported. The proportion of QUADAS items fulfilled was similar for studies in different sections of the review. However, as might be expected, the individual items fulfilled differed between the three clinical stages. Regression analysis found that different items showed a strong association with test performance for the different tests evaluated. These differences were observed both within and between the three clinical stages assessed by the review. The results of regression analyses were also affected by whether or not a weighting (by sample size) was applied. Our analysis was severely limited by the completeness of reporting and the differences between the index tests evaluated and the reference standards used to confirm diagnoses in the primary studies. Few tests were evaluated by sufficient studies to allow meaningful use of meta-analytic pooling and investigation of heterogeneity. This meant that further analysis to investigate heterogeneity could only be undertaken using a subset of studies, and that the findings are open to various interpretations. Conclusion: Further work is needed to investigate the influence of methodological quality on the results of diagnostic meta-analyses. Large data sets of well-reported primary studies are needed to address this question. Without significant improvements in the completeness of reporting of primary studies, progress in this area will be limited
