The effect of frozen irradiated bone homografts on the healing of defects in the mandible and femur of the rat
1. The effects of frozen irradiated homogenous bone grafts on the healing of circumscribed defects in the mandibles and femora of forty albino rats have been studied.
2. The grafts were well tolerated by the host animals and did not appear in any way either to stimulate or to inhibit osteogenesis. The rate of healing of the defects containing the homografts compared favourably with that of the control defects.KIM201
A 3-year cytogenetic survey of 9661 patients in South Africa
During the period 1 January 1977 - 31 December 1979,. 9 661 patients underwent cytogenetic investigation at seven participating laboratories in South Africa. The chromosome data were coded using a standard protocol and the results tabulated, being listed according to the clinical signs which led to referral for investigation. Cytogenetic investigation was most commonly requested for prenatal studies, and 22% of the group's effort was directed towards this. One in 27 amniotic cell specimens was reported to have shown anomalous chromosomes, trisomy 21 being the most frequentabnormality. The majority of postnatal investigations were requested because' congenital abnormalities suggested an underlying chromosomal defect. In 42,3% of 2420 patients a chromosome defect was confirmed. Results of chromosome studies are tabulated by indication for referral and the findings summarized. This collaborative study gives an indication of the nature and frequencY of chromosome disorders in South Africa
Gearing up impact assessment as a vehicle for achieving the UN sustainable development goals
This article reflects on the potential for impact assessment (IA) to be a major vehicle for implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While it is acknowledged that the SDGs are intended to deliver broader outcomes than IA currently does, we nevertheless argue there is significant convergence between IA and the SDGs, which we explore utilising the key dimensions of sustainability assessment: comprehensiveness, strategicness and integratedness. We conclude that ‘geared up’ IA might be used as a major vehicle to facilitate achievement of the SDGs. However, IA must become more comprehensive and integrated, such that the full suite of SDGs and their relationships, including trade-offs, can be dealt with in a transparent and inclusive way. © 2019, © 2019 IAIA
Neurotoxicity in calves induced by the plant, Nierembergia hippomanica Miers var. violacea Millan in South Africa
The plant Nierembergia hippomanica var. violacea has been incriminated in field outbreaks of neurotoxicity
in calves in the Free State Province. Hepatotoxicity and electrocardiogram (ECG) deviations
were induced in a sheep dosed with 5 g/kg dried plant material on four consecutive days. A calf dosed
with 2,5 g/kg dried plant material, on two consecutive days, did not show overt clinical changes. Voluntary
ingestion of approximately 30 g/kg fresh flowering plants by a second calf resulted in nervous
signs characterized by chewing motions, protrusion of the tongue, dysphagia, hypermetria, ataxia,
paresis and lateral recumbency. Salivation, dehydration and cardiac irregularities completed the clinical
picture. Clinical chemistry changes revealed muscle damage and increased serum urea and creatinine
concentrations indicative of kidney involvement. This is the first confirmed outbreak of Nierembergia
hippomanica var. violacea intoxication of stock in South Africa. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.

Evaluating strategic environmental assessment in the Netherlands: Content, process and procedure as indissoluble criteria for effectiveness
To assess the effectiveness of strategic environmental assessment (SEA) we distinguish between its contribution to the quality of the ultimate policy choice (usefulness, applicability), the procedural quality of the planning process (transparency, timeliness) and the quality of stakeholder participation in the planning process (openness, equity, dialogue). In the context of two case studies involving Dutch planning practice, we argue that when and how an SEA is applied is crucial to understanding its e
