The distinctive profile of risk factors of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in comparison with other head and neck cancer types
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and other head and neck cancer (HNCA) types show a great epidemiological variation in different regions of the world. NPC has multifactorial etiology and many interacting risk factors are involved in NPC development mainly Epstein Barr virus (EBV). There is a need to scrutinize the complicated network of risk factors affecting NPC and how far they are different from that of other HNCA types.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>122 HNCA patients and 100 control subjects were studied in the region of the Middle East. Three types of HNCA were involved in our study, NPC, carcinoma of larynx (CL), and hypopharyngeal carcinoma (HPC). The risk factors studied were the level of EBV serum IgG and IgA antibodies measured by ELISA, age, sex, smoking, alcohol intake, histology, and family history of the disease.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>EBV serum level of IgG and IgA antibodies was higher in NPC than CL, HPC, and control groups (p < 0.01). NPC was associated with lymphoepithelioma (LE) tumors, males, regular alcohol intake, and regular smoking while CL and HPC were not (p < 0.05). CL and HPC were associated with SCC tumors (p < 0.05). Furthermore, NPC, unlike CL and HPC groups, was not affected by the positive family history of HNCA (p > 0.05). The serum levels of EBV IgG and IgA antibodies were higher in LE tumors, regular smokers, younger patients, and negative family history groups of NPC patients than SCC tumors, non-regular smokers, older patients and positive family history groups respectively (p < 0.05) while this was not found in the regular alcoholics (p > 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It was concluded that risk factors of NPC deviate much from that of other HNCA. EBV, smoking, alcohol intake, LE tumors, male patient, and age > 54 years were hot risk factors of NPC while SCC and positive family history of the disease were not. Earlier incidence, smoking, LE tumors, and negative family history of the disease in NPC patients were associated much clearly with EBV. It is proposed that determining the correct risk factors of NPC is vital in assigning the correct risk groups of NPC which helps the early detection and screening of NPC.</p
Cultural Phylogenetics of the Tupi Language Family in Lowland South America
Background: Recent advances in automated assessment of basic vocabulary lists allow the construction of linguistic phylogenies useful for tracing dynamics of human population expansions, reconstructing ancestral cultures, and modeling transition rates of cultural traits over time. Methods: Here we investigate the Tupi expansion, a widely-dispersed language family in lowland South America, with a distance-based phylogeny based on 40-word vocabulary lists from 48 languages. We coded 11 cultural traits across the diverse Tupi family including traditional warfare patterns, post-marital residence, corporate structure, community size, paternity beliefs, sibling terminology, presence of canoes, tattooing, shamanism, men’s houses, and lip plugs. Results/Discussion: The linguistic phylogeny supports a Tupi homeland in west-central Brazil with subsequent major expansions across much of lowland South America. Consistently, ancestral reconstructions of cultural traits over the linguistic phylogeny suggest that social complexity has tended to decline through time, most notably in the independent emergence of several nomadic hunter-gatherer societies. Context, cognition and communication in language
Questions pertaining to the unique structure and organisation of language have a
long history in the field of linguistics. In recent years, researchers have explored
cultural evolutionary explanations, showing how language structure emerges from
weak biases amplified over repeated patterns of learning and use. One outstanding
issue in these frameworks is accounting for the role of context. In particular,
many linguistic phenomena are said to to be context-dependent; interpretation
does not take place in a void, and requires enrichment from the current state
of the conversation, the physical situation, and common knowledge about the
world. Modelling the relationship between language structure and context is
therefore crucial for developing a cultural evolutionary approach to language.
One approach is to use statistical analyses to investigate large-scale, cross-cultural
datasets. However, due to the inherent limitations of statistical analyses, especially
with regards to the inadequacy of these methods to test hypotheses about
causal relationships, I argue that experiments are better suited to address questions
pertaining to language structure and context. From here, I present a series
of artificial language experiments, with the central aim being to test how
manipulations to context influence the structure and organisation of language.
Experiment 1 builds upon previous work in iterated learning and communication
games through demonstrating that the emergence of optimal communication systems
is contingent on the contexts in which languages are learned and used. The
results show that language systems gradually evolve to only encode information
that is informative for conveying the intended meaning of the speaker - resulting
in markedly different systems of communication. Whereas Experiment 1 focused
on how context influences the emergence of structure, Experiments 2 and 3 investigate
under what circumstances do manipulations to context result in the loss
of structure. While the results are inconclusive across these two experiments,
there is tentative evidence that manipulations to context can disrupt structure,
but only when interacting with other factors. Lastly, Experiment 4 investigates
whether the degree of signal autonomy (the capacity for a signal to be interpreted without recourse to contextual information) is shaped by manipulations
to contextual predictability: the extent to which a speaker can estimate and exploit
contextual information a hearer uses in interpreting an utterance. When
the context is predictable, speakers organise languages to be less autonomous
(more context-dependent) through combining linguistic signals with contextual
information to reduce effort in production and minimise uncertainty in comprehension.
By decreasing contextual predictability, speakers increasingly rely on
strategies that promote more autonomous signals, as these signals depend less on
contextual information to discriminate between possible meanings. Overall, these
experiments provide proof-of-concept for investigating the relationship between
language structure and context, showing that the organisational principles underpinning
language are the result of competing pressures from context, cognition,
and communication
Methodology for Evaluating the University of Sydney's Culturally Competent Leadership Program.
This chapter discusses the methodology employed to evaluate the University of Sydney’s Culturally Competent Leadership Program (CCLP). The CCLP is an internal staff professional development project hosted and delivered by the National Centre for Cultural Competence (NCCC). The CCLP aims to develop and support cultural competence champions and practices across the University, and to create a university-wide network of empowered and engaged leaders committed to nurturing the development of successive generations of champions. In line with the University of Sydney’s strategic commitment to developing leaders at all levels, this program forms part of the collective commitment to embedding cultural competence into all facets of the University’s work. Built into the inaugural CCLP was an evaluation system that evaluated the program’s relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, impact and sustainability. Since 2017, the CCLP program has been delivered to the University staff by the NCCC for three consecutive years. Data used in this chapter was collected in the inaugural program
