    U okviru robotom potpomognutog protokola za dijagnozu autizma razvijen je modul za detekciju i praćenje proizvoljnog broja predmeta čije su boje poznate te prepoznavanje gesta u pokretima koje se tim predmetima izvode. Modul je prilagođen za izvođenje na humanoidnom robotu NAO u realnom vremenu. Praćenje predmeta se izvodi na robusan način koji dopušta snažnu interakciju između predmeta slične boje bez da se time gubi identitet pojedinog predmeta, te se pokazalo pouzdanim u realnim uvjetima izvođenja zadatka i u testovima praćenja. Prepoznavanje geste s korisničke je strane intuitivno i kvalitetno prepoznaje pokrete koji se koriste pri izvođenju protokola za dijagnozu.As part of a robot-assisted autism diagnostic protocol, a module has been developed for the detection and tracking of an arbitrary number of objects of known color, as well as recognition of gestures based on the movements made by the objects. The module is built for real-time execution on the NAO humanoid robot. Object tracking is done using a robust method allowing for strong interaction between objects of a similar color without disrupting the tracking of any interacting object, and is shown to be reliable both in real-world conditions as well as in tracking tests. The module's gesture recognition capabilities are intuitive to use and provide quality recognition of all movements used in the diagnostic protocol

    [EN] Every first countable pseudocompact Tychonoff space X has the property that every pseudocompact subspace of X is a closed subset of X (denoted herein by “FCC”). We study the property FCC and several closely related ones, and focus on the behavior of extension and other spaces which have one or more of these properties. Characterization, embedding and product theorems are obtained, and some examples are given which provide results such as the following. There exists a separable Moore space which has no regular, FCC extension space. There exists a compact Hausdorff Fréchet space which is not FCC.     Thresholds for adding degraded tropical forest to the conservation estate

    Logged and disturbed forests are often viewed as degraded and depauperate environments compared with primary forest. However, they are dynamic ecosystems1 that provide refugia for large amounts of biodiversity2,3, so we cannot afford to underestimate their conservation value4. Here we present empirically defined thresholds for categorizing the conservation value of logged forests, using one of the most comprehensive assessments of taxon responses to habitat degradation in any tropical forest environment. We analysed the impact of logging intensity on the individual occurrence patterns of 1,681 taxa belonging to 86 taxonomic orders and 126 functional groups in Sabah, Malaysia. Our results demonstrate the existence of two conservation-relevant thresholds. First, lightly logged forests (68%) of their biomass removed, and these are likely to require more expensive measures to recover their biodiversity value. Overall, our data confirm that primary forests are irreplaceable5, but they also reinforce the message that logged forests retain considerable conservation value that should not be overlooked

    Language changes in bilingual individuals with Alzheimer’s disease

    Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) in those who are bilingual is becoming increasingly prevalent in modern society, yet little is known about the impact of AD on the bilingual's two languages. Aims To gather information from the available literature on AD and bilingual individuals. Methods & Procedures The first author searched three electronic databases for relevant articles and retrieved 186 articles. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria and were selected for this review. Various research methods employed in assessing language changes in bilingual individuals with AD were captured. Main Contribution Preliminary findings suggest that both controls and bilingual individuals with Alzheimer's disease (BIAD) were more able on language-related tasks in their dominant language compared with their non-dominant language. The current literature would suggest that both languages in bilingual individuals are equally affected by AD; however, there is room to explore preliminary data on the fact that the non-dominant language, and indeed the dominant language, is more sensitive to AD. Conclusions & Implications More robust, clinically relevant research designs that test current theoretical frameworks are needed to inform the development of appropriate assessments, diagnosis and person-centred care for bilingual individuals with AD

    Multiscale approach for three-phase CNT/polymer/fiber laminated nanocomposite structures

    The free vibration analysis of laminated nanocomposite plates and shells using first-order shear deformation theory and the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method is presented. Each layer of the laminate is modelled as a three-phase composite. An example of such composite material is given by a polymeric matrix reinforced with Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs). CNTs enhance the mechanical properties of the polymer matrix and the nanocomposite is treated as an isotropic material; a micromechanics model is used to compute the engineering constants of the isotropic hybrid material. This approach based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka scheme takes into account the agglomeration of the nanoparticles in the matrix. The second step consists in combining this enriched matrix with unidirectional and oriented reinforcing fibers to obtain a fibrous composite with improved mechanical features. The overall mechanical properties of each orthotropic ply are evaluated through different micromechanics approaches. Each technique is illustrated in details and the transversely isotropic properties of the three-phase layers are completely defined. The effects of both CNTs agglomeration and the mass fraction of these particles are investigated comparing with the results obtained by various homogenization techniques
