Hydride CVD Hetero-epitaxy of B12P2 on 4 H-SiC
Icosahedral boron phosphide (B12P2) is a wide bandgap semiconductor (3.35 eV) that has been reported to “self-heal” from high-energy electron bombardment, making it attractive for potential use in radioisotope batteries, radiation detection, or in electronics in high radiation environments. This study focused on improving B12P2 hetero-epitaxial films by growing on 4 H-SiC substrates over the temperature range of 1250–1450 °C using B2H6 and PH3 precursors in a H2 carrier gas. XRD scans and Laue transmission photographs revealed that the epitaxial relationship was View the MathML source. The film morphology and crystallinity were investigated as a function of growth temperature and growth time. At 1250 °C, films tended to form rough, polycrystalline layers, but at 1300 and 1350 °C, films were continuous and comparatively smooth (View the MathML source). At 1400 or 1450 °C, the films grew in islands that coalesced as the films became thicker. Using XRD rocking curves to evaluate the crystal quality, 1300 °C was the optimum growth temperature tested. At 1300 °C, the rocking curve FWHM decreased with increasing film thickness from 1494 arcsec for a 1.1 μm thick film to 954 arcsec for a 2.7 μm thick film, suggesting a reduction in defects with thickness

Current treatments for Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) are limited in their application, have undesirable dosing regimens and unsatisfactory toxicities highlighting the need for the development of a safer drug pipeline. Our medicinal chemistry programme in developing rapidly accessible and modifiable heterocyclic scaffolds led to the design and synthesis of novel substituted benzothiophenes, with 6-benzimidazol-1-ylbenzothiophene derivatives demonstrating significant antitrypanosomal activities (IC50 <1 μM) against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and no toxicity towards mammalian cells
Pre-M Phase-promoting Factor Associates with Annulate Lamellae in Xenopus Oocytes and Egg Extracts
We have used complementary biochemical and in vivo approaches to study the compartmentalization of M phase-promoting factor (MPF) in prophase Xenopus eggs and oocytes. We first examined the distribution of MPF (Cdc2/CyclinB2) and membranous organelles in high-speed extracts of Xenopus eggs made during mitotic prophase. These extracts were found to lack mitochondria, Golgi membranes, and most endoplasmic reticulum (ER) but to contain the bulk of the pre-MPF pool. This pre-MPF could be pelleted by further centrifugation along with components necessary to activate it. On activation, Cdc2/CyclinB2 moved into the soluble fraction. Electron microscopy and Western blot analysis showed that the pre-MPF pellet contained a specific ER subdomain comprising "annulate lamellae" (AL): stacked ER membranes highly enriched in nuclear pores. Colocalization of pre-MPF with AL was demonstrated by anti-CyclinB2 immunofluorescence in prophase oocytes, in which AL are positioned close to the vegetal surface. Green fluorescent protein-CyclinB2 expressed in oocytes also localized at AL. These data suggest that inactive MPF associates with nuclear envelope components just before activation. This association may explain why nuclei and centrosomes stimulate MPF activation and provide a mechanism for targeting of MPF to some of its key substrates
Revising the Local Bubble Model due to Solar Wind Charge Exchange X-ray Emission
The hot Local Bubble surrounding the solar neighborhood has been primarily
studied through observations of its soft X-ray emission. The measurements were
obtained by attributing all of the observed local soft X-rays to the bubble.
However, mounting evidence shows that the heliosphere also produces diffuse
X-rays. The source is solar wind ions that have received an electron from
another atom. The presence of this alternate explanation for locally produced
diffuse X-rays calls into question the existence and character of the Local
Bubble. This article addresses these questions. It reviews the literature on
solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) X-ray production, finding that SWCX accounts
for roughly half of the observed local 1/4 keV X-rays found at low latitudes.
This article also makes predictions for the heliospheric O VI column density
and intensity, finding them to be smaller than the observational error bars.
Evidence for the continued belief that the Local Bubble contains hot gas
includes the remaining local 1/4 keV intensity, the observed local O VI column
density, and the need to fill the local region with some sort of plasma. If the
true Local Bubble is half as bright as previously thought, then its electron
density and thermal pressure are 1/square-root(2) as great as previously
thought, and its energy requirements and emission measure are 1/2 as great as
previously thought. These adjustments can be accommodated easily, and, in fact,
bring the Local Bubble's pressure more in line with that of the adjacent

International Influences and Drag: Just a Case of Tucking or Binding?
Recently there has been an internationalisation in the training of UK drag performers. Whilst papers exist focused on drag kings and queens related to their community, few explore how kings/queens train – and fewer still explore international aspects. There are formal courses for drag, but historically this training was informal, present within specific performance communities built around LGBTQ cultures. Tracing dominant figures in such training – the drag mother/father – in order to historicise and contextualise the current explosion in drag performance,the paper argues that the potential globalisation of drag is largely down to the diversification of sources of knowledge available via the internet. Traditionally, performers trained with an established practitioner, where regional variances of drag were passed on. However, current new performers often learn ‘tricks of the trade’ through internet videos posted by people on other continents. In these videos, practitioners pass on their knowledge from the perspective of their locality, as if universal. New kings/queens are not passive in this training and locally infuse their acts, yet historical and local erasures persist. The paper argues that to engage with drag as performance one must be aware of locality and the deep connects drag has with its communities
Physical activity but not sedentary activity is reduced in primary Sjögren’s syndrome
The aim of the study was to evaluate the levels of physical activity in individuals with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (PSS) and its relationship to the clinical features of PSS. To this cross-sectional study, self-reported levels of physical activity from 273 PSS patients were measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-short form (IPAQ-SF) and were compared with healthy controls matched for age, sex and body mass index. Fatigue and other clinical aspects of PSS including disease status, dryness, daytime sleepiness, dysautonomia, anxiety and depression were assessed using validated tools. Individuals with PSS had significantly reduced levels of physical activity [median (interquartile range, IQR) 1572 (594–3158) versus 3708 (1732–8255) metabolic equivalent of task (MET) × min/week, p < 0.001], but similar levels of sedentary activity [median (IQR) min 300 (135–375) versus 343 (223–433) (MET) × min/week, p = 0.532] compared to healthy individuals. Differences in physical activity between PSS and controls increased at moderate [median (IQR) 0 (0–480) versus 1560 (570–3900) MET × min/week, p < 0.001] and vigorous intensities [median (IQR) 0 (0–480) versus 480 (0–1920) MET × min/week, p < 0.001]. Correlation analysis revealed a significant association between physical activity and fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, depressive symptoms and quality of life. Sedentary activity did not correlate with fatigue. Stepwise linear regression analysis identified symptoms of depression and daytime sleepiness as independent predictors of levels of physical activity. Physical activity is reduced in people with PSS and is associated with symptoms of depression and daytime sleepiness. Sedentary activity is not increased in PSS. Clinical care teams should explore the clinical utility of targeting low levels of physical activity in PSS
Collisional and Radiative Processes in Optically Thin Plasmas
Most of our knowledge of the physical processes in distant plasmas is obtained
through measurement of the radiation they produce. Here we provide an overview of the
main collisional and radiative processes and examples of diagnostics relevant to the microphysical
processes in the plasma. Many analyses assume a time-steady plasma with ion
populations in equilibrium with the local temperature and Maxwellian distributions of particle
velocities, but these assumptions are easily violated in many cases. We consider these
departures from equilibrium and possible diagnostics in detail
