Stress Analysis of Three Marginal Configurations of Full Posterior Crowns by Three-Dimensional Photoelasticity
A simplified method was developed by which three-dimensional composite photoelastic models were constructed. Radiation induced oscillatory Hall effect in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices
We examine the radiation induced modification of the Hall effect in high
mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices that exhibit vanishing resistance under microwave
excitation. The modification in the Hall effect upon irradiation is
characterized by (a) a small reduction in the slope of the Hall resistance
curve with respect to the dark value, (b) a periodic reduction in the magnitude
of the Hall resistance, , that correlates with an increase in the
diagonal resistance, , and (c) a Hall resistance correction that
disappears as the diagonal resistance vanishes.Comment: 4 pages text, 4 color figure
Radiation-induced oscillatory magnetoresistance as a sensitive probe of the zero-field spin splitting in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices
We suggest an approach for characterizing the zero-field spin splitting of
high mobility two-dimensional electron systems, when beats are not readily
observable in the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The zero-field spin splitting and
the effective magnetic field seen in the reference frame of the electron is
evaluated from a quantitative study of beats observed in radiation-induced

First-principles Calculation of the Formation Energy in MgO-CaO Solid Solutions
The electronic structure and total energy were calculated for ordered and
disordered MgO-CaO solid solutions within the multiple scattering theory in
real space and the local density approximation. Based on the dependence of the
total energy on the unit cell volume the equilibrium lattice parameter and
formation energy were determined for different solution compositions. The
formation energy of the solid solutions is found to be positive that is in
agreement with the experimental phase diagram, which shows a miscibility gap.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Approximation Algorithms for the Capacitated Domination Problem
We consider the {\em Capacitated Domination} problem, which models a
service-requirement assignment scenario and is also a generalization of the
well-known {\em Dominating Set} problem. In this problem, given a graph with
three parameters defined on each vertex, namely cost, capacity, and demand, we
want to find an assignment of demands to vertices of least cost such that the
demand of each vertex is satisfied subject to the capacity constraint of each
vertex providing the service. In terms of polynomial time approximations, we
present logarithmic approximation algorithms with respect to different demand
assignment models for this problem on general graphs, which also establishes
the corresponding approximation results to the well-known approximations of the
traditional {\em Dominating Set} problem. Together with our previous work, this
closes the problem of generally approximating the optimal solution. On the
other hand, from the perspective of parameterization, we prove that this
problem is {\it W[1]}-hard when parameterized by a structure of the graph
called treewidth. Based on this hardness result, we present exact
fixed-parameter tractable algorithms when parameterized by treewidth and
maximum capacity of the vertices. This algorithm is further extended to obtain
pseudo-polynomial time approximation schemes for planar graphs
What can we learn about GW Physics with an elastic spherical antenna?
A general formalism is set up to analyse the response of an arbitrary solid
elastic body to an arbitrary metric Gravitational Wave perturbation, which
fully displays the details of the interaction antenna-wave. The formalism is
applied to the spherical detector, whose sensitivity parameters are thereby
scrutinised. A multimode transfer function is defined to study the amplitude
sensitivity, and absorption cross sections are calculated for a general metric
theory of GW physics. Their scaling properties are shown to be independent of
the underlying theory, with interesting consequences for future detector
design. The GW incidence direction deconvolution problem is also discussed,
always within the context of a general metric theory of the gravitational

D-branes on a Deformation of SU(2)
We discuss D-branes on a line of conformal field theories connected by an
exact marginal deformation. The line contains an SU(2) WZW model and two
mutually T-dual SU(2)/U(1) cosets times a free boson. We find the D-branes
preserving a U(1) isometry, an F-flux quantization condition and conformal
invariance. Away from the SU(2) point a U(1) times U(1) symmetry is broken to
U(1) times Z_k, i.e. continuous rotations of branes are accompanied by
rotations along the branes. Requiring decoupling of the cosets from the free
boson at the endpoints of the deformation breaks the continuous rotation of
branes to Z_k. At the SU(2) point the full U(1) times U(1) symmetry is
restored. This suggests the occurrence of phase transitions for branes at
angles in the coset model, at a semiclassical level. We also discuss briefly

Indirect techniques in nuclear astrophysics. Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient and Trojan Horse
Owing to the presence of the Coulomb barrier at astrophysically relevant
kinetic energies it is very difficult, or sometimes impossible, to measure
astrophysical reaction rates in the laboratory. That is why different indirect
techniques are being used along with direct measurements. Here we address two
important indirect techniques, the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC)
and the Trojan Horse (TH) methods. We discuss the application of the ANC
technique for calculation of the astrophysical processes in the presence of
subthreshold bound states, in particular, two different mechanisms are
discussed: direct capture to the subthreshold state and capture to the
low-lying bound states through the subthreshold state, which plays the role of
the subthreshold resonance. The ANC technique can also be used to determine the
interference sign of the resonant and nonresonant (direct) terms of the
reaction amplitude. The TH method is unique indirect technique allowing one to
measure astrophysical rearrangement reactions down to astrophysically relevant
energies. We explain why there is no Coulomb barrier in the sub-process
amplitudes extracted from the TH reaction. The expressions for the TH amplitude

Gauge/Gravity Correspondence from Open/Closed String Duality
We compute the annulus diagram corresponding to the interaction of a
fractional D3 brane with a gauge field on its world-volume and a stack of N
fractional D3 branes on the orbifolds C^2 /Z_2 and C^3/Z_2 x Z_2. We show that
its logarithmic divergence can be equivalently understood as due either to
massless open string states circulating in the loop or to massless closed
string states exchanged between two boundary states. This follows from the fact
that, under open/closed string duality, massless states in the open and closed
string channels are matched into each other without mixing with massive states.
This explains why the perturbative properties of many gauge theories living on
the worldvolume of less supersymmetric and nonconformal branes have been
recently obtained from their corresponding supergravity solution.Comment: LaTeX, 28 page
