Mediated intimacy: Sex advice in media culture
The bold argument of Mediated Intimacy (Barker et al., 2018)1 is that media of various kinds play an increasingly important role in shaping people’s knowledge, desires, practices and expectations about intimate relationships. While arguments rage about the nature and content of sex and relationship education in schools, it is becoming clear that more and more of us – young and old – look not to formal education, or even to our friends, for information about sex, but to the media (Albury, 2016; Attwood et al., 2015). This is not simply a matter of media ‘advice’ in the form of self-help books, magazine problem pages, or online ‘agony’ columns – though these are all proliferating and are discussed at length in the book. It is also about the wider cultural habitat of images, ideas and discourses about intimacy that circulate through and across media: the ‘happy endings’ of romantic comedies; the ‘money shots’ of pornography; the celebrity gossip about who is seeing whom, who is ‘cheating’, and who is looking ‘hot’; the lifestyle TV about ‘embarrassing bodies’ or being ‘undateable’; the newspaper features on how to have a ‘good’ divorce or ‘ten things never to say on a first date’; the new apps that incite us to quantify and rate our sex lives, and so forth. These constitute the ‘taken for granted’ of everyday understandings of intimacy, and they are at the heart of Mediated Intimacy
An invitation to quantum tomography (II)
The quantum state of a light beam can be represented as an infinite
dimensional density matrix or equivalently as a density on the plane called the
Wigner function. We describe quantum tomography as an inverse statistical
problem in which the state is the unknown parameter and the data is given by
results of measurements performed on identical quantum systems. We present
consistency results for Pattern Function Projection Estimators as well as for
Sieve Maximum Likelihood Estimators for both the density matrix of the quantum
state and its Wigner function. Finally we illustrate via simulated data the
performance of the estimators. An EM algorithm is proposed for practical
implementation. There remain many open problems, e.g. rates of convergence,
adaptation, studying other estimators, etc., and a main purpose of the paper is
to bring these to the attention of the statistical community.Comment: An earlier version of this paper with more mathematical background

The effects of acceleration stress on human workload and manual control
The effects of +Gz stress on operator task performance and workload were assessed. Subjects were presented a two dimensional maze and were required to solve it as rapidly as possible (by moving a light dot through it via a trim switch on a control stick) while under G-stress at levels from +1 Gz to +6 Gz. The G-stress was provided by a human centrifuge. The effects of this stress were assessed by two techniques; (1) objective performance measures on the primary maze-solving task, and (2) subjective workload measures obtained using the subjective workload assessment technique (SWAT). It was found that while neither moderate (+3 Gz) nor high (+5 Gz and +6 Gz) levels of G-stress affected maze solving performance, the high G levels did increase significantly the subjective workload of the maze task
Silver Nanoparticle Aggregates as Highly Efficient Plasmonic Antennas for Fluorescence Enhancement
The enhanced local fields around plasmonic structures can lead to enhancement of the excitation and modification of the emission quantum yield of fluorophores. So far, high enhancement of fluorescence intensity from dye molecules was demonstrated using bow-tie gap antenna made by e-beam lithography. However, the high manufacturing cost and the fact that currently there are no effective ways to place fluorophores only at the gap prevent the use of these structures for enhancing fluorescence-based biochemical assays. We report on the simultaneous modification of fluorescence intensity and lifetime of dye-labeled DNA in the presence of aggregated silver nanoparticles. The nanoparticle aggregates act as efficient plasmonic antennas, leading to more than 2 orders of magnitude enhancement of the average fluorescence. This is comparable to the best-reported fluorescence enhancement for a single molecule but here applies to the average signal detected from all fluorophores in the system. This highlights the remarkable efficiency of this system for surface-enhanced fluorescence. Moreover, we show that the fluorescence intensity enhancement varies with the plasmon resonance position and measure a significant reduction (300×) of the fluorescence lifetime. Both observations are shown to be in agreement with the electromagnetic model of surface-enhanced fluorescence

Ground state of two electrons on concentric spheres
We extend our analysis of two electrons on a sphere [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 79},
062517 (2009); Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 103}, 123008 (2009)] to electrons on
concentric spheres with different radii. The strengths and weaknesses of
several electronic structure models are analyzed, ranging from the mean-field
approximation (restricted and unrestricted Hartree-Fock solutions) to
configuration interaction expansion, leading to near-exact wave functions and
energies. The M{\o}ller-Plesset energy corrections (up to third-order) and the
asymptotic expansion for the large-spheres regime are also considered. We also
study the position intracules derived from approximate and exact wave
functions. We find evidence for the existence of a long-range Coulomb hole in
the large-spheres regime, and infer that unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory
over-localizes the electrons.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Exploring efficacy in personal constraint negotiation: an ethnography of mountaineering tourists
Limited work has explored the relationship between efficacy and personal constraint negotiation for adventure tourists, yet efficacy is pivotal to successful activity participation as it influences people’s perceived ability to cope with constraints, and their decision to use negotiation strategies. This paper explores these themes with participants of a commercially organised mountaineering expedition. Phenomenology-based ethnography was adopted to appreciate the social and cultural mountaineering setting from an emic perspective. Ethnography is already being used to understand adventure participation, yet there is considerable scope to employ it further through researchers immersing themselves into the experience. The findings capture the interaction between the ethnographer and the group members, and provide an embodied account using their lived experiences. Findings reveal that personal mountaineering skills, personal fitness, altitude sickness and fatigue were the four key types of personal constraint. Self-efficacy, negotiation-efficacy and other factors, such as hardiness and motivation, influenced the effectiveness of negotiation strategies. Training, rest days, personal health, and positive self-talk were negotiation strategies. A conceptual model illustrates these results and demonstrates the interplay between efficacy and the personal constraint negotiation journey for led mountaineers
