CITATION: Joubert, J. R., Burger, G. & Shephard, E. 1985. Inhalation therapy during acute asthma : the role of a combined steroid and beta-stimulant preparation. South African Medical Journal, 68:381-384.The original publication is available at http://www.samj.org.zaA compound consisting of a β-stimulant, salbutamol (100 μg/puff), and a steroid, beclomethasone diproprionate (50 μg/puff), was studied to test the hypothesis that the corticosteroid could enhance the bronchodilator proporties of the β-stimulant during chronic asthma and simulated acute attacks (antigen challenge). Conventional doses (200 μg and 100 μg of salbutamol and beclomethasone respectively) were compared using a schedule which included a second administration 1 hour later. The results obtained on the baseline bronchial responsiveness of chronic asthmatics and during the delayed asthmatic response (simulated acute asthma) were similar. The compound was as effective as salbutamol alone but not more so. A significantly greater bronchodilator response was recorded in all patients after the second administration of both the compound and salbutamol alone. The practical advantages of having one rather than two inhalers are evident, but the appropriate application of this compound agent, probably in a prophylactic role, must be defined.Publisher’s versio

Boldness traits, not dominance, predict exploratory flight range and homing behaviour in homing pigeons

This study investigated whether consistent individual differences in behaviour (particularly exploratory tendency and object neophilia) were associated with the tendency to explore in free-ranging scenarios. This was tested in homing pigeons. The results showed that birds that were more likely to explore in the loft were also more likely to explore the local area during self-driven flights. When birds were released from a fixed release points, those which had explored less took more tortuous and longer routes back to the loft. This demonstrates the cost associated with lack of exploratory behaviour, and also links traits measured in laboratory scenarios to behaviour in free-ranging animals

Using Adobe Flash Lite on mobile phones for psychological research: reaction time measurement reliability and inter-device variability

    Get PDF
Mobile telephones have significant potential for use in psychological research, possessing unique characteristics—not least their ubiquity—that may make them useful tools for psychologists. We examined whether it is possible to measure reaction times (RTs) accurately using Adobe Flash Lite on mobile phones. We ran simple and choice RT experiments on two widely available mobile phones, a Nokia 6110 Navigator and a Sony Ericsson W810i, using a wireless application protocol (WAP) connection to access the Internet from the devices. RTs were compared within subjects with those obtained using a Linux-based millisecond-accurate measurement system. Results show that measured RTs were significantly longer on mobile devices, and that overall RTs and distribution of RTs varied across device

Quantum affine Cartan matrices, Poincare series of binary polyhedral groups, and reflection representations

We first review some invariant theoretic results about the finite subgroups of SU(2) in a quick algebraic way by using the McKay correspondence and quantum affine Cartan matrices. By the way it turns out that some parameters (a,b,h;p,q,r) that one usually associates with such a group and hence with a simply-laced Coxeter-Dynkin diagram have a meaningful definition for the non-simply-laced diagrams, too, and as a byproduct we extend Saito's formula for the determinant of the Cartan matrix to all cases. Returning to invariant theory we show that for each irreducible representation i of a binary tetrahedral, octahedral, or icosahedral group one can find a homomorphism into a finite complex reflection group whose defining reflection representation restricts to i.Comment: 19 page

The use of antithrombotic medications is an important component of ischemic stroke treatment and prevention. This article reviews the evidence for best practices for antithrombotic use in stroke with focused discussion on the specific agents used to treat and prevent stroke

    Moduli spaces of toric manifolds

We construct a distance on the moduli space of symplectic toric manifolds of dimension four. Then we study some basic topological properties of this space, in particular, path-connectedness, compactness, and completeness. The construction of the distance is related to the Duistermaat-Heckman measure and the Hausdorff metric. While the moduli space, its topology and metric, may be constructed in any dimension, the tools we use in the proofs are four-dimensional, and hence so is our main result.Comment: To appear in Geometriae Dedicata, minor changes to previous version, 19 pages, 6 figure

A Miniature Fibre-Optic Raman Probe Fabricated by Ultrafast Laser-Assisted Etching

Optical biopsy describes a range of medical procedures in which light is used to investigate disease in the body, often in hard-to-reach regions via optical fibres. Optical biopsies can reveal a multitude of diagnostic information to aid therapeutic diagnosis and treatment with higher specificity and shorter delay than traditional surgical techniques. One specific type of optical biopsy relies on Raman spectroscopy to differentiate tissue types at the molecular level and has been used successfully to stage cancer. However, complex micro-optical systems are usually needed at the distal end to optimise the signal-to-noise properties of the Raman signal collected. Manufacturing these devices, particularly in a way suitable for large scale adoption, remains a critical challenge. In this paper, we describe a novel fibre-fed micro-optic system designed for efficient signal delivery and collection during a Raman spectroscopy-based optical biopsy. Crucially, we fabricate the device using a direct-laser-writing technique known as ultrafast laser-assisted etching which is scalable and allows components to be aligned passively. The Raman probe has a sub-millimetre diameter and offers confocal signal collection with 71.3% ± 1.5% collection efficiency over a 0.8 numerical aperture. Proof of concept spectral measurements were performed on mouse intestinal tissue and compared with results obtained using a commercial Raman microscope

Liouville integrability of a class of integrable spin Calogero-Moser systems and exponents of simple Lie algebras

In previous work, we introduced a class of integrable spin Calogero-Moser systems associated with the classical dynamical r-matrices with spectral parameter, as classified by Etingof and Varchenko for simple Lie algebras. Here the main purpose is to establish the Liouville integrability of these systems by a uniform method
