Slave-boson field fluctuation approach to the extended Falicov-Kimball model: charge, orbital, and excitonic susceptibilities
Based on the SO(2)-invariant slave-boson scheme, the static charge, orbital,
and excitonic susceptibilities in the extended Falicov-Kimball model are
calculated. Analyzing the phase without long-range order we find instabilities
towards charge order, orbital order, and the excitonic insulator (EI) phase.
The instability towards the EI is in agreement with the saddle-point phase
diagram. We also evaluate the dynamic excitonic susceptibility, which allows
the investigation of uncondensed excitons. We find qualitatively different
features of the exciton dispersion at the semimetal-EI and at the
semiconductor-EI transition supporting a crossover scenario between a BCS-type
electron-hole condensation and a Bose-Einstein condensation of preformed bound

A probabilistic analysis of argument cogency
This paper offers a probabilistic treatment of the conditions for argument cogency as endorsed in informal logic: acceptability, relevance, and sufficiency. Treating a natural language argument as a reason-claim-complex, our analysis identifies content features of defeasible argument on which the RSA conditions depend, namely: change in the commitment to the reason, the reason’s sensitivity and selectivity to the claim, one’s prior commitment to the claim, and the contextually determined thresholds of acceptability for reasons and for claims. Results contrast with, and may indeed serve to correct, the informal understanding and applications of the RSA criteria concerning their conceptual dependence, their function as update-thresholds, and their status as obligatory rather than permissive norms, but also show how these formal and informal normative approachs can in fact align

MODERN THERMAL ELECTRON BEAM PROCESSES – RESEARCH RESULTS AND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION
Thermal electron beam (EB) technologies are becoming more and more attractive especiallybecause they are ecologically friendly and energy saving on the one hand and highly precise, excellentlycontrollable and highly productive on the other hand.Using three-dimensional energy transfer fields, the interaction conditions between the EB and the surfaceof the material, the conditions of the heat conduction in the material, the geometry of the part, and the loadconditions of the component can be taken into account. High flexibility, precision, and reproducibility aretypical characteristics of EB technologies and facilities. High productivity is achieved by new technologicalsolutions like simultaneous interaction of the EB in several processing areas (spots) or by carrying out severalprocesses simultaneously in modern EB facilities and systems (such as multi-chamber, lock-type and otherconcepts). The influence of beam parameters and energy transfer conditions on the microstructure of thematerials and its properties will be discussed for different EB technologies. Information on ideal treatmentconditions will be given. The paper deals with the current development state regarding beam deflectiontechniques, technological processes and some facility concepts, and with the state of industrial application
Violacein Induces Death of Resistant Leukaemia Cells via Kinome Reprogramming, Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Golgi Apparatus Collapse
It is now generally recognised that different modes of programmed cell death (PCD) are intimately linked to the cancerous process. However, the mechanism of PCD involved in cancer chemoprevention is much less clear and may be different between types of chemopreventive agents and tumour cell types involved. Therefore, from a pharmacological view, it is crucial during the earlier steps of drug development to define the cellular specificity of the candidate as well as its capacity to bypass dysfunctional tumoral signalling pathways providing insensitivity to death stimuli. Studying the cytotoxic effects of violacein, an antibiotic dihydro-indolone synthesised by an Amazon river Chromobacterium, we observed that death induced in CD34(+)/c-Kit(+)/P-glycoprotein(+)/MRP1(+) TF1 leukaemia progenitor cells is not mediated by apoptosis and/or autophagy, since biomarkers of both types of cell death were not significantly affected by this compound. To clarify the working mechanism of violacein, we performed kinome profiling using peptide arrays to yield comprehensive descriptions of cellular kinase activities. Pro-death activity of violacein is actually carried out by inhibition of calpain and DAPK1 and activation of PKA, AKT and PDK, followed by structural changes caused by endoplasmic reticulum stress and Golgi apparatus collapse, leading to cellular demise. 3H- 1–23-Corticotropin wurde an Dextrangel (Sephadex G-25) gebunden und konnte durch Serumproteine, Albumin oder 0,1 N HCl eluiert werden. Mittels Dextrangelfiltration wurde gefunden, daß3H-ACTH kompetitiv an Serumproteine (Albumin) und Dextrangel gebunden wurde. Auch für natürliches Schweine-ACTH und endogenes ACTH in Patientenplasma (Adrenalektomie) wurde mittels biologischer ACTH-Bestimmung die Bindung von ACTH an Proteine bestätigt.3H- 1–23 corticotropin was bound to dextran gel (sephadex G-25) and was eluted by either serum proteins, albumin or 0.1 N HCl. How does Brazil measure up? Comparing rankings through the lenses of nation brand indexes
A considerable amount of literature has been published on nation brand and yet not much regarding measurement. The purpose of this paper is to examine nation brand indexes and explore the unbalanced outcomes of a country’s position in these recognized instruments. Although research has been carried out on nation brand, no single study exists comparing a country in four diverse nation brand indexes, which are the reputable ones by Anholt (2007), Fetscherin (2010), Fombrun (2014) and Anholt and Govers (2014). This paper also reflects on the critical studies perspective of the place branding research domain, discussed by Lucarelli and Berg (2011). After a qualitative approach applied to Brazil, it is believed that these indexes mutually support and complement each other - even though they use different approaches, methodologies, samples, and data. Moreover, each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of accuracy and rationality. Findings from this paper’s evaluation may guide nation brand managers, governments, and researchers to recognize that indexes should be taken into account when analysing a nation brand and its complex image. Therefore, this paper contributes to existing knowledge on the critical studies perspective of the contemporary theoretical structure of the place branding research domain by providing a comparative study based on real data-based rankings of nation brand indexes
ACTH-Bestimmungen im Plasma aus dem Bulbus cranialis venae jugularis
Der Anstieg der Corticosteroninkretion in das Nebennierenvenenblut frisch hypophysektomierter Ratten diente zur Bestimmung von ACTH-Spiegeln in 1 ml nativen, menschlichen Plasma. Normale ACTH-Plasmaspiegel sind sowohl bei Punktion der Vena cubitalis als auch des Bulbus cranialis venae jugularis durch diese Methode nicht oder nur ungenau zu erfassen. Bei Patienten mit pathologisch erhöhten ACTH-Spiegeln in der Vena cubitalis sind die ACTH-Spiegel im Bulbus cranialis venae jugularis signifikant höher. Es ließ sich eine Beziehung zwischen ACTH-Spiegel in der Peripherie (Vena cubitalis), Differenz der ACTH-Spiegel zwischen Bulbus cranialis venae jugularis und Vena cubitalis und biologischer Halbwertszeit von endogenem ACTH aufstellen. Nach den Ergebnissen der Bestimmung von ACTH-Spiegeln bei Nebennierengesunden läßt sich folgern, daß die biologische Halbwertszeit von endogenem ACTH größer als 4 min sein muß. Bei Patienten mit erhöhten ACTH-Spiegeln ließ sich die biologische Halbwertszeit von endogenem ACTH größenordnungsmäßig mit ca. 40 min berechnen. Bei diesen Patienten betrug die mittlere tägliche ACTH-Inkretion ca. 100 E.ACTH-contents of 1 ml specimens of human plasma were assayed by measurement of increases of corticosterone output in the adrenal vein of acutely hypophysectomized rats. This procedure is not sensitive enough to measure normal ACTH-levels acurately, neither when blood was drawn from the bulbus cranialis venae jugularis, nor from the vena cubitalis. In patients having pathologically elevated ACTH-levels, the ACTH-content of plasma is significantly higher in the bulbus cranialis venae jugularis than in peripheral venous blood. An equation is presented formulating the relation of peripheral ACTH-levels, differences of ACTH-levels between bulbus cranialis venae jugularis and vena cubitalis, and of the biological halflife of endogenous ACTH. On the basis of the results of the determinations of socalled normal ACTH-levels it can be concluded, that the biological halflife of endogenous ACTH is longer than 4 min. From the data of patients with elevated ACTH-levels a halflife of approximately 40 min and a mean ACTH-secretion of approx. 100 units per day could be calculated
Chiral charge order in 1-TiSe: importance of lattice degrees of freedom
We address the question of the origin of the recently discovered chiral
property of the charge-density-wave phase in 1-TiSe which so far lacks a
microscopic understanding. We argue that the lattice degrees of freedom seems
to be crucial for this novel phenomenon. We motivate a theoretical model that
takes into account one valence and three conduction bands, a strongly screened
Coulomb interaction between the electrons, as well as the coupling of the
electrons to a transverse optical phonon mode. The Falicov-Kimball model
extended in this way possesses a charge-density-wave state at low temperatures,
which is accompanied by a periodic lattice distortion. The charge ordering is
driven by a lattice deformation and electron-hole pairing (excitonic)
instability in combination. We show that both electron-phonon interaction and
phonon-phonon interaction must be taken into account at least up to quartic
order in the lattice displacement to achieve a stable chiral charge order. The
chiral property is exhibited in the ionic displacements. Furthermore, we
provide the ground-state phase diagram of the model and give an estimate of the
