    Nonsingular and accelerated expanding universe from effective Yang-Mills theory

    The energy-momentum tensor coming from one-parameter effective Yang- Mills theory is here used to describe the matter-energy content of the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann cosmology in its early stages. The behavior of all solutions is examined. Particularly, it is shown that only solutions corresponding to an open model allow the universe to evolve into an accelerated expansion. This result appears as a possible mechanism for an inflationary phase produced by a vector field.     Gait Impairment in Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review

    Introduction: Gait impairment occurs across the spectrum of traumatic brain injury (TBI); from mild (mTBI) to moderate (modTBI), to severe (sevTBI). Recent evidence suggests that objective gait assessment may be a surrogate marker for neurological impairment such as TBI. However, the most optimal method of objective gait assessment is still not well understood due to previous reliance on subjective assessment approaches. The purpose of this review was to examine objective assessment of gait impairments across the spectrum of TBI. Methods: PubMed, AMED, OVID and CINAHL databases were searched with a search strategy containing key search terms for TBI and gait. Original research articles reporting gait outcomes in adults with TBI (mTBI, modTBI, sevTBI) were included. Results: 156 citations were identified from the search, of these, 13 studies met the initial criteria and were included into the review. The findings from the reviewed studies suggest that gait is impaired in mTBI, modTBI and sevTBI (in acute and chronic stages), but methodological limitations were evident within all studies. Inertial measurement units were most used to assess gait, with single-task, dual-task and obstacle crossing conditions used. No studies examined gait across the full spectrum of TBI and all studies differed in their gait assessment protocols. Recommendations for future studies are provided. Conclusion: Gait was found to be impaired in TBI within the reviewed studies regardless of severity level (mTBI, modTBI, sevTBI), but methodological limitations of studies (transparency and reproducibility) limit clinical application. Further research is required to establish a standardised gait assessment procedure to fully determine gait impairment across the spectrum of TBI with comprehensive outcomes and consistent protocols

    The effectiveness of educational interventions to develop patient safety knowledge, skills, behaviours, and attitudes in undergraduate nursing students: a systematic review [Abstract]

    Background and aim: Nurses are crucial in ensuring patient safety, coordinating care and developing organisational structures to improve health outcomes. Therefore, undergraduate nursing education programs should be designed to provide future nurses with the knowledge, skills, behaviours, and attitudes that align with patient safety principles and improve the quality of healthcare systems. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions in developing patient safety knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes in undergraduate nursing students. Methods: A systematic review of effectiveness was conducted following The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology. Published studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish were searched from July 2011 to January 2022 across seven databases. Grey literature was also assessed. Two independent reviewers screened titles and abstracts and appraised the full text using standardised JBI tools. Data was extracted using an adapted instrument from JBI. Due to heterogeneities in intervention characteristics, studies methodologies and outcomes measures, meta-analysis was not feasible, and the findings were presented narratively. Results: Thirty quantitative studies met the review criteria. They were rated from low to moderate risk of bias. Several teaching methods were applied, and the effectiveness of these interventions was inconsistent with increasing patient safety knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes across nursing students in all years of the programme. Conclusion: More robust research is recommended to understand the impact of interventions to teach patient safety to undergraduate nursing students. Incorporating safety principles into the curriculum and maintaining a consistent focus throughout the nursing student's education is paramount

    iVOMS: Instrumented Vestibular / Ocular motor screen in healthy controls and mild traumatic brain injury

    Objective Vestibular/ocular deficits occur with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The vestibular/ocular motor screening (VOMS) tool is used to assess individuals post-mTBI, which primarily relies upon subjective self-reported symptoms. Instrumenting the VOMS (iVOMS) with technology may allow for more objective assessment post-mTBI, which reflects actual task performance. This study aimed to validate the iVOMS analytically and clinically in mTBI and controls. Methods Seventy-nine people with sub-acute mTBI (<12 weeks post-injury) and forty-four healthy control participants performed the VOMS whilst wearing a mobile eye-tracking on a one-off visit. People with mTBI were included if they were within 12 weeks of a physician diagnosis. Participants were excluded if they had any musculoskeletal, neurological or sensory deficits which could explain dysfunction. A series of custom-made eye tracking algorithms were used to assess recorded eye-movements. Results The iVOMS was analytically valid compared to the reference (ICC2,1 0.85–0.99) in mTBI and controls. The iVOMS outcomes were clinically valid as there were significant differences between groups for convergence, vertical saccades, smooth pursuit, vestibular ocular reflex and visual motion sensitivity outcomes. However, there was no significant relationship between iVOMS outcomes and self-reported symptoms. Conclusion The iVOMS is analytically and clinically valid in mTBI and controls, but further work is required to examine the sensitivity of iVOMS outcomes across the mTBI spectrum. Findings also highlighted that symptom and physiological issue resolution post-mTBI may not coincide and relationships need further examination

    Introduction Patient safety is a healthcare discipline that aims to prevent and reduce patient harm, risks and errors during the provision of healthcare. Given the size of the nursing workforce in the healthcare system the inclusion of patient safety in the undergraduate nursing curriculum is necessary to enhance a safe culture in the daily work of their future careers. To this end, it is essential to apply effective teaching strategies to develop patient safety competencies. This review will aim to evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions in developing patient safety knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes in undergraduate nursing students within the existing topic areas of the WHO Multi-professional Patient Safety Curriculum Guide. Methods and analysis The databases Medline, CINAHL, Scopus, Education Research Complete, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, LILACS, Medes and Grey literature such as ClinicalTrials.gov, Google Scholar, DART-Europe, ProQuest Dissertations, CAPES thesis and dissertations, The Virginia Henderson Global e-Repository, Mednar and Thesis Canada will be searched from July 2011 to January 2022. Two independent reviewers will conduct the search, extract the data and assess the risk of bias for the included studies, using standardised critical appraisal instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute. The quality of the evidence will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment Development and Evaluation methodology. Studies will be pooled in the meta-analysis. Alternatively, the findings will be presented in narrative form, including tables and figures, to aid in data presentation. Ethics and dissemination This study raises no ethical issues. The findings will be disseminated through presentations at professional conferences and publications in a peer-reviewed journal
