    Are they ‘worth their weight in gold’? Sport for older adults: benefits and barriers of their participation for sporting organisations

    The ageing global population has led to an increased focus on health for older adults. However, older adults have not been a specific priority for some sporting organisations (SOs). Thus, there is an emerging opportunity for this age group to be considered within international sport policy. The aim of this study was to understand the benefits and barriers that SOs encounter when engaging older adults. Eight focus group interviews (n = 49) were held with representatives of Australian national sporting organisations (NSOs), and older adults who were either sport club or non-sport club members. The socioecological model domains, interpersonal, organisational and policy, were used as a framework for thematic analysis, and organisational capacity building concepts were utilised to explain the findings. Common perceived benefits included interpersonal benefits (intergenerational opportunities and role models) and organisational benefits (volunteering, financial contributions and maximised facility usage) for engaging older adults. Common perceived barriers included interpersonal barriers (competing priorities and perceived societal expectations), organisational barriers (lack of appropriate playing opportunities, lack of facility access and lack of club capacity) and policy barriers (strategic organisational focus on children and elite sport and risk management). Whilst participation in sport is not common for older adults, their involvement can be invaluable for sport clubs. It is not anticipated that any policy focus on older adults will significantly increase active participation for this age group. However, any increase in older adults’ sport participation either through actively playing, supporting family and friends and/or volunteering will contribute to the positive health of individuals, sport clubs and the community.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Evaluation of meat and meat product oxidation and off-flavor formation: Managing oxidative changes

    One of the primary issues with processed foods during heat treatment and freezing storage is fat oxidation, which causes significant changes in fats due to their interaction with reactive oxygen species (ROS). This interaction leads to the creation of various aldehydes that have a high affinity for large molecules, such as proteins, leading to the formation of final products of advanced oxidation processes that contribute to food spoilage. Co-oxidation can also result in extensive damage. Another problem affecting the quality and nutritional value of meat products is protein oxidation, which can occur during storage via freezing and thawing or as a result of heat treatment. Heat treatment can cause physical and chemical changes, such as the loss of some essential amino acids and the transformation of certain amino acids into carbonyl compounds via various mechanisms. Protein oxidation is indicated by the accumulation of these carbonyl compounds, and the heat treatment can lead to the denaturation of myoglobin, which is responsible for the brown color of cooked meat and is influenced by several factors. Active protein aggregates can interact with the oxidation products of polyunsaturated fatty acids and with carbohydrate glycation or glycoxidation to produce Maillard products.     Home advantage in the Winter Paralympic Games 1976–2014

    Purpose: There is a limited amount of home advantage research concerned with winter sports. There is also a distinct lack of studies that investigate home advantage in the context of para-sport events. This paper addresses this gap in the knowledge by examining home advantage in the Winter Paralympic Games. Methods: Using a standardised measure of success, we compared the performances of host nations at home with their own performances away from home between 1976 and 2014. Both country level and individual sport level analysis is conducted for this time period. Comparisons are also drawn with the Winter Olympic Games since 1992, the point from which both the Winter Olympic Games and the Winter Paralympic Games have been hosted by the same nations and in the same years. Results: Clear evidence of a home advantage effect in the Winter Paralympic Games was found at country level. When examining individual sports, only alpine skiing and cross country skiing returned a significant home advantage effect. When comparing home advantage in the Winter Paralympic Games with the Winter Olympic Games for the last seven host nations (1992–2014), we found that home advantage was generally more pronounced (although not a statistically significant difference) in the case of the former. Conclusion: The causes of home advantage in the Winter Paralympic Games are unclear and should be investigated further

    Peri-Implant Bone Behavior after Single Drill versus Multiple Sequence for Osteotomy Drill

    Objectives. The present study aims to compare the drilling protocol effect on osseointegration event in three commercially available titanium dental implants with different drill protocol using a rabbit tibia model. Materials and Methods. Three different drilling sequences were compared as follows: drilling sequence using a single unique drill of 4.2 mm conical implant (Group 1), drilling sequence using 3 consecutive cylindrical drills for a 4.1 mm cylindrical implant (Group 2), and drilling sequence using 3 consecutive conical drills for a 4.3 mm conical implant (Group 3). For each group, 18 drilling procedures and implant placements were performed, totalizing 54 commercially available titanium dental implants. The samples were removed 6 weeks after implantation. Resonance frequency analyses (RFA) were performed immediately after the implantation, and at 6 weeks removal torque test (RTt) and histological analysis were performed. Results. The RFA measured showed statistical difference between the groups in time 1 and no significant statistical differences in time 2 (p>0.05). In the RTt no significant difference was found between the 3 groups tested. Histomorphometric analysis showed no significant difference between groups in the bone-to-implant contact% (p>0.05). Conclusion. In the present preclinical study, osteotomy using a single bur did not show differences regarding the proposed and evaluated tests parameters for assessing the peri-implant behavior

    Convergence and divergence of elite sport policies: is there a one-size-fits-all model to develop international sporting success?

    This study is based on a detailed international comparison of the elite sport policies of 15 nations as part of the SPLISS (Sports Policy Factors Leading to International Sporting Success) study. It aims to provide deeper insights into the phenomena of convergence and divergence of elite sport policies. The research uses a mixed methods approach based on document reviews, interviews with high performance directors and surveys of 3142 athletes, 1376 coaches and 246 performance directors. There appears to be no generic blueprint for achieving international sporting success. Nations that perform well in international competition show varying patterns of relative strengths and weaknesses across nine pillars, 96 critical success factors, and 750 sub-factors. While the basic raw ingredients of the recipe might be common in broad terms, the combinations in which they are mixed are diverse. Much of this diversity appears to be driven by social, cultural and political factors
