    An economic analysis of potential water resource development for agriculture in the Blackwater-Lamine River Basin, Missouri

    Includes vita.This study estimates the potential future agricultural benefits of flood control and drainage development in the Blackwater-Lamine River Basin, Missouri. A linear programming model was used to derive solutions for three future demand-supply conditions and three levels of flood control and drainage. Output from the model included land use, total agricultural production, cost of production, gross income, net income and annual sheet erosion. Results indicate that the rate of adoption of technology and land use shifts will be the most important factors in expanding future output of agricultural products because these factors apply to the entire land base. The adoption of more efficient technology alone could increase agricultural output by 23 percent and net income by 42 percent by the year 2000. A combination of adopting more efficient technology and limited land use shifts could result in increasing agricultural output by 69 percent and net income by 93 percent by the year 2000. Benefits to flood control and drainage were estimated by computing the difference in net income "without development" and “with development" for each level of resource development. Although benefits to resource development vary somewhat depending on which of the three models are used, far greater variation occurs when inconsistent assumptions regarding demand levels and supply response are introduced. For example, if constant land use is assumed “without" development and the minimum cost model is assumed "with" development benefits could be over-estimated by more than four million dollars. The results of this study indicate that while there is justification for including benefits to some shifts in land use in response to flood control, these benefits will ordinarily be of a small magnitude. Of more importance in determining future land use is the demand for farm products and supply response adjustments made by farmers to the demand. Agricultural output and income can be increased significantly but not without environmental consequences. Increasing output and income would involve shifting land to high value tilled crops which would result in less habitat for wildlife, higher use of chemicals for weed and pest control, and higher erosion rates all of which will adversely affect the environment. Gross erosion is directly related to agricultural output with the marginal rate of erosion increasing with additional agricultural output. Flood control and drainage development alone would not affect erosion significantly. Results of the study indicate that the economic incentives for clearing forested bottomland and converting it to cropland will be high regardless of whether or not flood control and drainage development occurs. Flood control and drainage development will undoubtedly increase the incentives for clearing bottomland forest areas. Therefore, if a major environmental goal is to retain selected forested bottomland areas for environmental and recreational purposes, the rights to these forested tracts must be acquired by the public.Includes bibliographical references

    The general strategy to advance knowledge of the ionospheric component of the solar terrestrial system should consist of a three pronged attack on the problem. Ionospheric models should be refined by utilization of existing and new data bases. The data generated in the future should emphasize spatial and temporal gradients and their relation to other events in the solar terrestrial system. In parallel with the improvement in modeling, it will be necessary to initiate a program of advanced instrument development. In particular, emphasis should be placed on the area of improved imaging techniques. The third general activity to be supported should be active experiments related to a better understanding of the basic physics of interactions occurring in the ionospheric environment. These strategies are briefly discussed

    Themeda Triandra Renosterveld in the Heidelberg District

    Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigated the composition of Themeda triandra Renosterveld in part of the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy and the effects of selected environmental and management variables to provide guidelines for promoting the presence of Themeda triandra in the veld. The ZĂŒrich-Montpellier phytosociological method was used to determine the composition of the Renosterveld communities. The point quadrat method was used to determine the cover of Themeda triandra at three grass dominated sites and compare cover from one site with past cover measurements at the specific site. Ordination was used to examine the effects of the environmental and management variables on the plant communities. Two community groups, five communities and five subcommunities were identified and described. The Themeda triandra – Stoebe phyllostachys Grassland Community Group consists of two communities of which one has two subcommunities. The Themeda triandra – Elytropappus rhinocerotis Shrubland Community Group consists of three communities of which one has three subcommunities. The vegetation units described in this study have not been described previously in the literature. One community belongs to Silcrete Fynbos while another subcommunity is transitional between Renosterveld and thicket and gallery forest. The rest of the plant communities fit the definition for Renosterveld (the local Renosterveld type is Eastern RĂ»ens Shale Renosterveld). Cover of Themeda triandra did not differ significantly either between sites or between years. The comparison of Themeda triandra cover between years was done at a site that had been burnt between the last two sampling times yet the cover was not significantly different. This indicates that fire and other management practices did not have a negative impact on Themeda triandra at the site. Unconstrained ordination of the dataset in which cover/abundance values were included, grouped the relevĂ©s by moisture and disturbance but the presence/absence dataset indicates that the two community groups have a slight transitional overlap. Constrained ordination of both datasets with a) soil variables and b) management variables, both showed a tendency to separate the relevĂ©s into community groups, that did not happen with topographic and vegetation variables. Ordination did not separate the community groups into their subdivisions. The soil variables (both nutrients and texture) influence the vegetation structure and the community distribution. Under the existing grazing management regime, fire at three to five year intervals promoted the dominance of Themeda triandra by affecting the structure of the plant communities, the abundance of species other than Themeda triandra, and influencing which plant community is present. The use of fire as a management tool was regulated by the importance of the natural veld pastures to the farmers. The natural veld pastures are not suitable for dairy cattle in milk. Thus dairy farmers are less likely to burn the natural veld (no planned burns only chance fires) than those who farm with mutton or beef (planned burns on a three to five year interval).AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die studie het die samestelling van Themeda triandra Renosterveld in ’n deel van die Grootvadersbosch-Bewaria en die uitwerking van geselekteerde omgewings- en bestuursveranderlikes ondersoek om riglyne vir die bevordering van Themeda triandra in die veld daar te stel. Die ZĂŒrich-Montpellier fitososiologiese metode is gebruik om die samestelling van die Renosterveldgemeenskappe te bepaal. Die puntkwadraat-metode is gebruik om ’n skatting van die dekking van Themeda triandra by drie gras-gedomineerde persele te bepaal en om ’n vergelyking te maak tussen die huidige en vorige dekking van ’n enkele perseel. Ordinasie is gebruik om die invloed van omgewings- en bestuursveranderlikes op die plantgemeenskappe te bepaal. Twee gemeenskapsgroepe, vyf gemeenskappe en vyf subgemeenskappe is geĂŻdentifiseer en gedefinieer. Die Themeda triandra – Stoebe phyllostachys Grasland-gemeenskapsgroep bestaan uit twee gemeenskappe waarvan een in twee subgemeenskappe onderverdeel is. Die Themeda triandra – Elytropappus rhinocerotis Struik-gemeenskapsgroep bestaan uit drie gemeenskappe waarvan een in drie subgemeenskappe onderverdeel is. Die plantegroei-eenhede wat in die studie beskryf is, is nie voorheen in die literatuur beskryf nie. Een gemeenskap behoort aan Silkreet-fynbos en ’n ander subgemeenskap is ’n oorgangsfase tussen Renosterveld en struikbosveld of woud, terwyl die res van die plantgemeenskappe binne die definisie van Renosterveld val (die plaaslike Renosterveld tipe staan bekend as Oostelike RĂ»ens Skalierenosterveld). Die bedekking van Themeda triandra het nie betekenisvol gevarieer tussen Ăłf die verskillende lokaliteite Ăłf die verskillende jare nie. Die vergelyking van Themeda triandra-bedekking oor tyd is onderneem in ’n gebied wat tussen opnames gebrand is. Die bedekking het nie betekenisvol verskil nie. Dit dui aan dat vuur en ander bestuurspraktyke nie ’n negatiewe invloed op Themeda triandra in hierdie gebied het nie. Onbeperkte ordinasie van die datastel met die vergelyking van bedekking/volopheidwaardes, groepeer die relevĂ©s volgens vogtigheid en versteuring, terwyl die datastel ten opsigte van teenwoordigheid/ afwesigheid aandui dat die twee gemeenskapsgroepe ’n effense oorgangs-oorvleueling het. Beperkte ordinasie van beide datastelle met a) grondveranderlikes en b) bestuursveranderlikes, toon albei ’n neiging om die gemeenskapsgroepe te skei, wat nie gebeur het met die topografiese- en plantegroeiveranderlikes nie. Ordinasie het nie die gemeenskapsgroepe onderverdeel in gemeenskappe of subgemeenskappe nie. Die grondveranderlikes (beide voedingstowwe en tekstuur) beĂŻnvloed die struktuur en die verspreiding van die plantegroei. Met die bestaande weidingsbestuur bevorder brande met ’n interval van tussen drie tot vyf jaar die oorheersing van Themeda triandra deur die struktuur van die teenwoordige plantgemeenskap te beĂŻnvloed, deur die getal van die verskillende plantsoorte te beĂŻnvloed en selfs deur die plantgemeenskap se voorkoms te beĂŻnvloed. Die waarde wat die boer aan die natuurlike veld as weiveld heg bepaal die mate waartoe hulle veldbrand gebruik as ’n deel van bestuur. Die natuurlike veld is nie geskik vir melkkoeie wat in die melkproduksiestadium is nie. Die melkboere is dus minder geneig om die natuurlike veld te brand (geen beplande brande nie net kans brande) as die boere wat met vleisbeeste of skape boer (beplande brande elke drie tot vyf jaar)

    Parametric Forcing of Waves with Non-Monotonic Dispersion Relation: Domain Structures in Ferrofluids?

    Surface waves on ferrofluids exposed to a dc-magnetic field exhibit a non-monotonic dispersion relation. The effect of a parametric driving on such waves is studied within suitable coupled Ginzburg-Landau equations. Due to the non-monotonicity the neutral curve for the excitation of standing waves can have up to three minima. The stability of the waves with respect to long-wave perturbations is determined viavia a phase-diffusion equation. It shows that the band of stable wave numbers can split up into two or three sub-bands. The resulting competition between the wave numbers corresponding to the respective sub-bands leads quite naturally to patterns consisting of multiple domains of standing waves which differ in their wave number.     Effects of neutral gas release on current collection during the CHARGE-2 rocket experiment

    Observations of current collection enhancements due to cold nitrogen gas control jet emissions from a highly charged rocket payload in the ionosphere are reported. These observations were made during the second cooperative high altitude rocket gun experiment (CHARGE-2) which was an electrically tethered mother/daughter payload system. The current collection enhancement was observed at the daughter payload located 100 to 400 m away from the mother which was firing an energetic electron beam. The authors interpret these results in terms of an electrical discharge forming in close proximity to the daughter during the short periods of gas emission. The results indicate that it is possible to enhance the electron current collection capability of positively charged vehicles by means of deliberate neutral gas releases into an otherwise undisturbed space plasma. These results can also be compared with recent laboratory observations of hollow cathode plasma contactors operating in the ignited mode. Experimental observations of current collection enhancements due to cold nitrogen gas control jet emissions from a highly charged, isolated daughter payload in the nighttime ionosphere were made. These observations were derived from the second cooperative high altitude rocket gun experiment (CHARGE-2) which was an electrically tethered mother-daughter payload system. The rocket flew from White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in December, 1985. The rocket achieved an altitude of 261 km and carried a 1 keV electron beam emitting up to 48 mA of current (Myers, et al., 1989a). The mother payload, carried the electron beam source, while the daughter acted as a remote current collection and observation platform and reached a distance of 426 m away from the main payload. Gas emissions at the daughter were due to periodic thruster jet firings to maintain separation velocity between the two payloads

    Parametrically excited surface waves in magnetic fluids: observation of domain structures

    Observations of parametrically excited surface waves in a magnetic fluid are presented. Under the influence of a magnetic field these waves have a non--monotonic dispersion relation, which leads to a richer behavior than in ordinary liquids. We report observation of three novel effects, namely: i) domain structures, ii) oscillating defects and iii) relaxational phase oscillations.Comment: to be published in Physical Review Letter

    Working group report on beam plasmas, electronic propulsion, and active experiments using beams

    The JPL Workshop addressed a number of plasma issues that bear on advanced spaceborne technology for the years 2000 and beyond. Primary interest was on the permanently manned space station with a focus on identifying environmentally related issues requiring early clarification by spaceborne plasma experimentation. The Beams Working Group focused on environmentally related threats that platform operations could have on the conduct and integrity of spaceborne beam experiments and vice versa. Considerations were to include particle beams and plumes. For purposes of definition it was agreed that the term particle beams described a directed flow of charged or neutral particles allowing single-particle trajectories to represent the characteristics of the beam and its propagation. On the other hand, the word plume was adopted to describe a multidimensional flow (or expansion) of a plasma or neutral gas cloud. Within the framework of these definitions, experiment categories included: (1) Neutral- and charged-particle beam propagation, with considerations extending to high powers and currents. (2) Evolution and dynamics of naturally occurring and man-made plasma and neutral gas clouds. In both categories, scientific interest focused on interactions with the ambient geoplasma and the evolution of particle densities, energy distribution functions, waves, and fields
