Mechanism of inhibition of tumour growth by aspirin and indomethacin.
The growth of a 3-methylcholanthrene-induced fibrosarcoma of C3H mice was inhibited by aspirin and indomethacin. While the tumour contained relatively high concentrations of PGE2-like material, that were markedly diminished by indomethacin treatment, our results did not confirm the recently proposed hypothesis that the anti-tumour effect arises from a restoration of depressed immune function. For example, mice that had completely eliminated their tumours under indomethacin administration were not immune to rechallenge. The tumour-bearing animals were not non-specifically immunodepressed, as their splenic PFC responses against SRBC were enhanced. However, while indomethacin augmented the PFC response in normal mice, this adjuvant effect was depressed in tumour-bearing animals. The spleen-cell PHA responses of tumour bearers were severely depressed, and such cells suppressed the PHA response of normal cells. Only after prolonged indomethacin treatment did animals (with comparable tumour burdens) show weak PHA responses and somewhat diminished suppressive activity. Possible alternative mechanisms, such as direct cytotoxicity, or inhibition of inflammation, phosphodiesterase activity, blood coagulation or calcium availability were not implicated (nor definitively excluded) in the anti-tumour effect
"Self pop-out”: agency enhances self-recognition in visual search
In real-life situations, we are often required to recognize our own movements among movements originating from other people. In social situations, these movements are often correlated (for example, when dancing or walking with others) adding considerable difficulty to self-recognition. Studies from visual search have shown that visual attention can selectively highlight specific features to make them more salient. Here, we used a novel visual search task employing virtual reality and motion tracking to test whether visual attention can use efferent information to enhance self-recognition of one's movements among four or six moving avatars. Active movements compared to passive movements allowed faster recognition of the avatar moving like the subject. Critically, search slopes were flat for the active condition but increased for passive movements, suggesting efficient search for active movements. In a second experiment, we tested the effects of using the participants' own movements temporally delayed as distractors in a self-recognition discrimination task. We replicated the results of the first experiment with more rapid self-recognition during active trials. Importantly, temporally delayed distractors increased reaction times despite being more perceptually different than the spatial distractors. The findings demonstrate the importance of agency in self-recognition and self-other discrimination from movement in social setting
Product remanufacturing and disposal: A numerical comparison of alternative control strategies
In this paper we consider a single-product, single-echelon production and inventory system with product returns, product remanufacturing, and product disposal. For this system we consider three different procurement and inventor
Quasifree pion photoproduction on the deuteron in the region
Photo production of pions on the deuteron is studied in the spectator nucleon
model. The Born terms of the elementary production amplitude are determined in
pseudovector N coupling and supplied with a form factor. The
resonance is considered both in the and the channel. The parameters of
the resonance and the cutoff of the form factors are fixed on the
leading photoproduction multipoles. Results for total and differential cross
sections are compared with experimental data. Particular attention is paid to
the role of Pauli correlations of the final state nucleons in the quasifree
case. The results are compared with those for pion photoproduction on the
nucleon.Comment: 17 pages LateX2e including 5 postscript figure
How do electronic carriers cross Si-bound alkyl monolayers?
Electron transport through Si-C bound alkyl chains, sandwiched between n-Si
and Hg, is characterized by two distinct types of barriers, each dominating in
a different voltage range. At low voltage, current depends strongly on
temperature but not on molecular length, suggesting transport by thermionic
emission over a barrier in the Si. At higher voltage, the current decreases
exponentially with molecular length, suggesting tunneling through the
molecules. The tunnel barrier is estimated, from transport and photoemission
data, to be ~1.5 eV with a 0.25me effective mass.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Flexible epidemiological model for estimates and short-term projections in generalised HIV/AIDS epidemics
International audienceObjective UNAIDS and country analysts use a simple infectious disease model, embedded in the Estimation and Projection Package (EPP), to generate annual updates on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. Our objective was to develop modifications to the current model that improve fit to recently observed prevalence trends across countries. Methods Our proposed alternative to the current EPP approach simplifies the model structure and explicitly models changes in average infection risk over time, operationalised using penalised B-splines in a Bayesian framework. We also present an alternative approach to initiating the epidemic that improves standardisation and efficiency, and add an informative prior distribution for changes in infection risk beyond the last data point that enhances the plausibility of short-term extrapolations. Results The spline-based model produces better fits than the current model to observed prevalence trends in settings that have recently experienced levelling or rising prevalence following a steep decline, such as Uganda and urban Rwanda. The model also predicts a deceleration of the decline in prevalence for countries with recent experience of steady declines, such as Kenya and Zimbabwe. Estimates and projections from our alternative model are comparable to those from the current model where the latter performs well. Conclusions A more flexible epidemiological model that accommodates changing infection risk over time can provide better estimates and short-term projections of HIV/AIDS incidence, prevalence and mortality than the current EPP model. The alternative model specification can be incorporated easily into existing analytical tools that are used to produce updates on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic
Exclusion Statistics in a two-dimensional trapped Bose gas
We briefly explain the notion of exclusion statistics and in particular
discuss the concept of an ideal exclusion statistics gas. We then review a
recent work where it is demonstrated that a {\em two-dimensional} Bose gas with
repulsive delta function interactions obeys ideal exclusion statistics, with a
fractional parameter related to the interaction strength.Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX. Proceedings of the Salerno workshop "Theory of

Tests of relativity using a microwave resonator
The frequencies of a cryogenic sapphire oscillator and a hydrogen maser are
compared to set new constraints on a possible violation of Lorentz invariance.
We determine the variation of the oscillator frequency as a function of its
orientation (Michelson-Morley test) and of its velocity (Kennedy-Thorndike
test) with respect to a preferred frame candidate. We constrain the
corresponding parameters of the Mansouri and Sexl test theory to and which is equivalent to the best previous result for the
former and represents a 30 fold improvement for the latter.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters (October 3,

The impact of health on professionally active people's incomes in Poland. Microeconometric analysis
The outcome of the research confirms the occurrence of positive interaction between professionally active people's incomes and the self-assessed state of health. People declaring a bad state of health have incomes by 20% on average lower than people who enjoy good health (assuming that the remaining characteristics of the surveyed person are the same). In case of men, the impact of health state on incomes is slightly greater than in case of women.
