    Comportamiento del trigo candeal en las condiciones ambientales del Valle Bonaerense del Río Colorado

    p.101-106Con el fin de evaluar la adaptación del cultivo de trigo para fideos o trigo candeal (Triticum durum Desf.) a las condiciones ambientales del Valle Bonaerense del Río Colorado, las que incluyen riego, se realizó una serie de ensayos durante los años 1985-87. En ellos además se analizó la respuesta a la fertilización nitrogenada, tanto en rendimiento como en calidad de grano, empleando dos fuentes de nitrógeno. El cultivar Buck Candisur superó en rendimiento el resto de los comerciales, alcanzando un máximo de 6651 kg.ha-1 en 1987. Su contenido proteico fue bajo, siendo consistentemente superado por Bonaerense Quilacó. El que mostró un potencial de rendimiento algo menor, aunque no difirió estadísticamente de aquel. Ambos cultivares no difirieron en peso de mil granos o peso hectolítrico. La dosis de 100 kg de N.ha-1resultó la óptima para lograr un buen rendimiento con máxima eficiencia de uso del nitrógeno. A ese nivel no se detectaron diferencias significativas entre las fuentes de nitrógeno urea y sulfato de amonio. La dosis de 200 kg de N.ha-1 maximizó el contenido proteico

    Crossover from adiabatic to sudden interaction quenches in the Hubbard model: Prethermalization and nonequilibrium dynamics

    The recent experimental implementation of condensed matter models in optical lattices has motivated research on their nonequilibrium behavior. Predictions on the dynamics of superconductors following a sudden quench of the pairing interaction have been made based on the effective BCS Hamiltonian; however, their experimental verification requires the preparation of a suitable excited state of the Hubbard model along a twofold constraint: (i) a sufficiently nonadiabatic ramping scheme is essential to excite the nonequilibrium dynamics, and (ii) overheating beyond the critical temperature of superconductivity must be avoided. For commonly discussed interaction ramps there is no clear separation of the corresponding energy scales. Here we show that the matching of both conditions is simplified by the intrinsic relaxation behavior of ultracold fermionic systems: For the particular example of a linear ramp we examine the transient regime of prethermalization [M. Moeckel and S. Kehrein, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 175702 (2008)] under the crossover from sudden to adiabatic switching using Keldysh perturbation theory. A real-time analysis of the momentum distribution exhibits a temporal separation of an early energy relaxation and its later thermalization by scattering events. For long but finite ramping times this separation can be large. In the prethermalization regime the momentum distribution resembles a zero temperature Fermi liquid as the energy inserted by the ramp remains located in high energy modes. Thus ultracold fermions prove robust to heating which simplifies the observation of nonequilibrium BCS dynamics in optical lattices.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures Second version with small modifications in section

    Human 3D Airway Tissue Models for Real-Time Microscopy: Visualizing Respiratory Virus Spreading

    Our knowledge about respiratory virus spreading is mostly based on monolayer cultures that hardly reflect the complex organization of the airway epithelium. Thus, there is a strong demand for biologically relevant models. One possibility to study virus spreading at the cellular level is real-time imaging. In an attempt to visualize virus spreading under somewhat more physiological conditions, Calu-3 cells and human primary fibroblasts were co-cultured submerged or as air-liquid interface (ALI). An influenza A virus (IAV) replicating well in cell culture, and carrying a red fluorescent protein (RFP) reporter gene was used for real-time imaging. Our three-dimensional (3D) models exhibited important characteristics of native airway epithelium including a basement membrane, tight junctions and, in ALI models, strong mucus production. In submerged models, first fluorescence signals appeared between 9 and 12 h post infection (hpi) with a low multiplicity of infection of 0.01. Virus spreading further proceeded in the immediate vicinity of infected cells. In ALI models, RFP was found at 22 hpi and later. Consequently, the progression of infection was delayed, in contrast to the submerged model. With these features, we believe that our 3D airway models can deliver new insights in the spreading of IAV and other respiratory viruses

Cooperación Cabildo que provenían de una red de fertilización y presentaban un rango de entre 18 y 40 g las mil semillas, y entre 9 y 18 por ciento de proteína. Con ellas se sembraron tres ensayos en dos años. El rendimiento se correlacionó positivamente con el peso de mil granos y negativamente con el porcentaje de proteína. No se obtuvo correlación del rendimiento con el peso seco de las plántulas ni con el porcentaje de emergencia. Ese mayor rendimiento se debió al incremento del número de espigas por m2

    Selection Criteria for Drug-Eluting Versus Bare-Metal Stents and the Impact of Routine Angiographic Follow-Up 2-Year Insights From the HORIZONS-AMI (Harmonizing Outcomes With Revascularization and Stents in Acute Myocardial Infarction) Trial

    ObjectivesWe sought to identify patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction most likely to benefit from drug-eluting stents (DES), and to evaluate the impact of routine angiographic follow-up on the apparent differences between stent types.BackgroundDES might have greatest utility in patients who would benefit most from their antirestenotic properties.MethodsWe randomly assigned 3,006 patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction to paclitaxel-eluting stents (PES) or to bare-metal stents (BMS). Events were assessed at 12 months and 24 months, with a subset undergoing routine angiographic follow-up at 13 months. Using well-known risk factors for restenosis and target lesion revascularization (TLR), risk groups were formed to examine the absolute differences between PES and BMS.ResultsCompared with BMS, PES reduced TLR at 12 months from 7.4% to 4.5% (p = 0.003). Insulin-treated diabetes mellitus (hazard ratio: 3.12), reference vessel diameter ≤3.0 mm (hazard ratio: 2.89), and lesion length ≥30 mm (hazard ratio: 2.49) were independent predictors of 12-month TLR after BMS. In patients with 2 or 3 of these baseline risk factors, PES compared with BMS markedly reduced 12-month TLR (19.8% vs. 8.1%, p = 0.003). In patients with 1 of these risk factors, the 12-month rates of TLR were modestly reduced by PES (7.3% vs. 4.3%, p = 0.02). The 12-month TLR rates were low and similar for both stents in patients with 0 risk factors (3.3% vs. 3.2%, p = 0.93). Routine 13-month angiographic follow-up resulted in a marked increase in TLR procedures (more so with BMS) so that the absolute incremental benefit of PES compared with BMS doubled from 2.9% at 12 months to 6.0% at 24 months, a difference evident in all risk strata.ConclusionsPatients at high risk for TLR after BMS in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction for whom DES are of greatest benefit may be identified. Conversely, DES may be of less clinical benefit for patients at lower risk for TLR after BMS. Routine angiographic follow-up increases the perceived clinical benefits of DES, and must be avoided to accurately estimate absolute treatment effects.     Dynamics of a Quantum Phase Transition and Relaxation to a Steady State

    We review recent theoretical work on two closely related issues: excitation of an isolated quantum condensed matter system driven adiabatically across a continuous quantum phase transition or a gapless phase, and apparent relaxation of an excited system after a sudden quench of a parameter in its Hamiltonian. Accordingly the review is divided into two parts. The first part revolves around a quantum version of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism including also phenomena that go beyond this simple paradigm. What they have in common is that excitation of a gapless many-body system scales with a power of the driving rate. The second part attempts a systematic presentation of recent results and conjectures on apparent relaxation of a pure state of an isolated quantum many-body system after its excitation by a sudden quench. This research is motivated in part by recent experimental developments in the physics of ultracold atoms with potential applications in the adiabatic quantum state preparation and quantum computation.Comment: 117 pages; review accepted in Advances in Physic

    Photonic spectral density of coupled microwave cavities

    We study a pair of anharmonic microwave cavities that is connected by an optical fiber. The photonic spectral density characterizes the evolution of the coupled cavities after the system has been prepared in a Fock or N00N state. We evaluate the photonic spectral density within the recursive projection method and find that the anharmonicity has no substantial effect on the spectral properties. In all cases the photonic spectral density has a Gaussian envelope for large photon numbers.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Effectiveness of neonatal pulse oximetry screening for detection of critical congenital heart disease in daily clinical routine—results from a prospective multicenter study

    Pulse oximetry screening (POS) has been proposed as an effective, noninvasive, inexpensive tool allowing earlier diagnosis of critical congenital heart disease (cCHD). Our aim was to test the hypothesis that POS can reduce the diagnostic gap in cCHD in daily clinical routine in the setting of tertiary, secondary and primary care centres. We conducted a prospective multicenter trial in Saxony, Germany. POS was performed in healthy term and post-term newborns at the age of 24–72 h. If an oxygen saturation (SpO2) of ≤95% was measured on lower extremities and confirmed after 1 h, complete clinical examination and echocardiography were performed. POS was defined as false-negative when a diagnosis of cCHD was made after POS in the participating hospitals/at our centre. From July 2006–June 2008, 42,240 newborns from 34 institutions have been included. Seventy-two children were excluded due to prenatal diagnosis (n = 54) or clinical signs of cCHD (n = 18) before POS. Seven hundred ninety-five newborns did not receive POS, mainly due to early discharge after birth (n = 727; 91%). In 41,445 newborns, POS was performed. POS was true positive in 14, false positive in 40, true negative in 41,384 and false negative in four children (three had been excluded for violation of study protocol). Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value were 77.78%, 99.90%, 25.93% and 99.99%, respectively. With POS as an adjunct to prenatal diagnosis, physical examination and clinical observation, the percentage of newborns with late diagnosis of cCHD was 4.4%. POS can substantially reduce the postnatal diagnostic gap in cCHD, and false-positive results leading to unnecessary examinations of healthy newborns are rare.     Axonal transport deficit in a KIF5A–/– mouse model

    Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder preferentially affecting the longest corticospinal axons. More than 40 HSP genetic loci have been identified, among them SPG10, an autosomal dominant HSP caused by point mutations in the neuronal kinesin heavy chain protein KIF5A. Constitutive KIF5A knockout (KIF5A–/–) mice die early after birth. In these mice, lungs were unexpanded, and cell bodies of lower motor neurons in the spinal cord swollen, but the pathomechanism remained unclear. To gain insights into the pathophysiology, we characterized survival, outgrowth, and function in primary motor and sensory neuron cultures from KIF5A–/– mice. Absence of KIF5A reduced survival in motor neurons, but not in sensory neurons. Outgrowth of axons and dendrites was remarkably diminished in KIF5A–/– motor neurons. The number of axonal branches was reduced, whereas the number of dendrites was not altered. In KIF5A–/– sensory neurons, neurite outgrowth was decreased but the number of neurites remained unchanged. In motor neurons maximum and average velocity of mitochondrial transport was reduced both in anterograde and retrograde direction. Our results point out a role of KIF5A in process outgrowth and axonal transport of mitochondria, affecting motor neurons more severely than sensory neurons. This gives pathophysiological insights into KIF5A associated HSP, and matches the clinical findings of predominant degeneration of the longest axons of the corticospinal tract

    Erythrocyte Transketolase Activity, Markers of Cardiac Dysfunction and the Diagnosis of Infantile Beriberi

    Infantile beriberi, or clinical thiamin (vitamin B1) deficiency in infants, is a forgotten disease in Asia, where ∼100 years ago it was a major public health problem. Children aged ∼2–3 months present in cardiac failure but usually rapidly improve if given thiamin injections. It remains relatively common in Vientiane, Lao PDR (Laos) probably because of prolonged intra- and post-partum maternal food avoidance behaviours. There has been very little recent research on the best diagnostic techniques. We conducted a case control study of 47 infants with beriberi and age-matched afebrile and febrile controls in Vientiane. The conventional measures of thiamin deficiency, basal and activated erythrocyte transketolase activities (ETK) and activation (α) coefficients, were assayed along with three markers of cardiac dysfunction - plasma brain natriuretic peptide, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and troponin T. Basal ETK was a better biochemical marker of infantile beriberi than the activation coefficient. Raised plasma troponin T may be a useful indicator of infantile beriberi in babies at risk and in the absence of other evident causes
