Deuteron Dipole Polarizabilities and Sum Rules
The scalar, vector, and tensor components of the (generalized) deuteron
electric polarizability are calculated, as well as their logarithmic
modifications. Several of these quantities arise in the treatment of the
nuclear corrections to the deuterium Lamb shift and the deuterium hyperfine
structure. A variety of second-generation potential models are used and a
(subjective) error is assigned to the calculations. The zero-range
approximation is used to analyze a subset of the results, and a simple
relativistic version of this approximation is developed.Comment: 14 pages, LaTex - submitted to Physical Review
The nucleon-sigma coupling constant in QCD Sum Rules
The external-field QCD Sum Rules method is used to evaluate the coupling
constant of the light isoscalar-scalar meson (``'' or \epsilon) to the
nucleon. The contributions that come from the excited nucleon states and the
response of the continuum threshold to the external field are calculated. The
obtained value of the coupling constant is compatible with the large value
required in one-boson exchange potential models of the two-nucleon interaction.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Partial Wave Analyses of the pp data alone and of the np data alone
We present results of the Nijmegen partial-wave analyses of all NN scattering
data below Tlab = 500 MeV. We have been able to extract for the first time the
important np phase shifts for both I = 0 and I = 1 from the np scattering data
alone. This allows us to study the charge independence breaking between the pp
and np I = 1 phases. In our analyses we obtain for the pp data chi^2_{min}/Ndf
= 1.13 and for the np data chi^2_{min}/Ndf = 1.12.Comment: Report THEF-NYM 94.04, 4 pages LaTeX, one PostScript figure appended.

Nuclear Polarizabilities and Logarithmic Sum Rules
The electric polarizability and logarithmic mean-excitation energy are
calculated for the deuteron using techniques introduced in atomic physics.
These results are then used to improve limits on the atomic-deuterium frequency
shift due to nuclear polarization in the unretarded dipole limit, as well as
confirming previous results.Comment: 7 pages, latex -- To appear in Phys. Rev. C -
Nuclear Sizes and the Isotope Shift
Darwin-Foldy nuclear-size corrections in electronic atoms and nuclear radii
are discussed from the nuclear-physics perspective. Interpretation of precise
isotope-shift measurements is formalism dependent, and care must be exercised
in interpreting these results and those obtained from relativistic electron
scattering from nuclei. We strongly advocate that the entire nuclear-charge
operator be used in calculating nuclear-size corrections in atoms, rather than
relegating portions of it to the non-radiative recoil corrections. A
preliminary examination of the intrinsic deuteron radius obtained from
isotope-shift measurements suggests the presence of small meson-exchange
currents (exotic binding contributions of relativistic order) in the nuclear
charge operator, which contribute approximately 1/2%.Comment: 17 pages, latex, 1 figure -- Submitted to Phys. Rev. A -- epsfig.sty

Contaminant-related suppression of delayed-type hypersensitivity and antibody responses in harbor seals fed herring from the Baltic Sea.
Recent mass mortalities among several marine mammal populations have led to speculation about increased susceptibility to viral infections as a result of contaminant-induced immunosuppression. In a 2.5-year study, we fed herring from either the relatively uncontaminated Atlantic Ocean or the contaminated Baltic Sea to two groups of captive harbor seals and monitored immune function in the seals. Seals fed the contaminated fish were less able to mount a specific immunological response to ovalbumin, as measured by in vivo delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) reactions and antibody responses. The skin reaction to this protein antigen was characterized by the appearance of mononuclear cells which peaked at 24 hr after intradermal administration, characteristic of DTH reactions in other animals studied. These DTH responses correlated well with in vitro tests of T-lymphocyte function, implicating this cell type in the reaction. Aryl-hydrocarbon (Ah) receptor-dependent toxic equivalent (TEQ) profiles in blubber biopsies taken from the seals implicated polychlorinated biphenyls rather than dioxins or furans in the observed immunosuppression. Marine mammal populations currently inhabiting polluted coastal environments in Europe and North America may therefore have an increased susceptibility to infections, and pollution may have played a role in recent virus-induced mass mortalities
Soft-core baryon-baryon potentials for the complete baryon octet
SU(3) symmetry relations on the recently constructed hyperon-nucleon
potentials are used to develop potential models for all possible baryon-baryon
interaction channels. The main focus is on the interaction channels with total
strangeness S=-2, -3, and -4, for which no experimental data exist yet. The
potential models for these channels are based on SU(3) extensions of potential
models for the S=0 and S=-1 sectors, which are fitted to experimental data.
Although the SU(3) symmetry is not taken to be exact, the S=0 and S=-1 sectors
still provide the necessary constraints to fix all free parameters. The
potentials for the S=-2, -3, and -4 sectors, therefore, do not contain any
additional free parameters, which makes them the first models of this kind.
Various properties of the potentials are illustrated by giving results for
scattering lengths, bound states, and total cross sections.Comment: 22 pages RevTex, 6 postscript figure
The Puzzle and the Nuclear Force
The nucleon-deuteron analyzing power in elastic nucleon-deuteron
scattering poses a longstanding puzzle. At energies below
approximately 30 MeV cannot be described by any realistic NN force. The
inclusion of existing three-nucleon forces does not improve the situation.
Because of recent questions about the NN phases, we examine whether
reasonable changes in the NN force can resolve the puzzle. In order to do this
we investigate the effect on the waves produced by changes in different
parts of the potential (viz., the central force, tensor force, etc.), as well
as on the 2-body observables and on . We find that it is not possible with
reasonable changes in the NN potential to increase the 3-body and at the
same time to keep the 2-body observables unchanged. We therefore conclude that
the puzzle is likely to be solved by new three-nucleon forces, such as
those of spin-orbit type, which have not yet been taken into account.Comment: 35 pages in REVTeX, 1 figure in postscript and 3 figures in PiCTe
Hyperon-nucleon scattering and hyperon masses in the nuclear medium
We analyze low-energy hyperon-nucleon scattering using an effective field
theory in next-to-leading order. By fitting experimental cross sections for
laboratory hyperon momenta below 200 MeV/c and using information from the
hypertriton we determine twelve contact-interaction coefficients. Based on
these we discuss the low-density expansion of hyperon mass shifts in the
nuclear medium.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
