Apparatus and process for microbial detection and enumeration
An apparatus and process for detecting and enumerating specific microorganisms from large volume samples containing small numbers of the microorganisms is presented. The large volume samples are filtered through a membrane filter to concentrate the microorganisms. The filter is positioned between two absorbent pads and previously moistened with a growth medium for the microorganisms. A pair of electrodes are disposed against the filter and the pad electrode filter assembly is retained within a petri dish by retainer ring. The cover is positioned on base of petri dish and sealed at the edges by a parafilm seal prior to being electrically connected via connectors to a strip chart recorder for detecting and enumerating the microorganisms collected on filter
Natural turbulence electrical power generator
An energy conversion apparatus is disclosed in which a stator, fixed to a watertight housing, is coupled to a rotor by a helical spring which suspends the rotor from the housing. Natural turbulence of a fluid, such as water or air, causes acceleration of the housing, and hence, acceleration of the stator. Inertia of the rotor, coupled to the stator through the helical spring and the housing, causes relative motion, both longitudinal and rotational, between the stator and the rotor. The rotational motion between the rotor, and the stator is used to generate electrical current
Description and field test of an in situ coliform monitoring system
A prototype in situ system for monitoring the levels of fecal coliforms in shallow water bodies was developed and evaluated. This system was based on the known relationship between the concentration of the coliform bacteria and the amount of hydrogen they produce during growth in a complex organic media. The prototype system consists of a sampler platform, which sits on the bottom; a surface buoy, which transmits sampler-generated data; and a shore station, which receives, displays the data, and controls the sampler. The concept of remote monitoring of fecal coliform concentrations by utilizing a system based on the electrochemical method was verified during the evaluation of the prototype
On the supergravity formulation of mirror symmetry in generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds
We derive the complete supergravity description of the N=2 scalar potential
which realizes a generic flux-compactification on a Calabi-Yau manifold
(generalized geometry). The effective potential V_{eff}=V_{(\partial_Z V=0)},
obtained by integrating out the massive axionic fields of the special
quaternionic manifold, is manifestly mirror symmetric, i.e. invariant with
respect to {\rm Sp}(2 h_2+2)\times {\rm Sp}(2 h_1+2) and their exchange, being
h_1, h_2 the complex dimensions of the underlying special geometries. {\Scr

Three Dimensional Topological Field Theory induced from Generalized Complex Structure
We construct a three-dimensional topological sigma model which is induced
from a generalized complex structure on a target generalized complex manifold.
This model is constructed from maps from a three-dimensional manifold to an
arbitrary generalized complex manifold . The theory is invariant under the
diffeomorphism on the world volume and the -transformation on the
generalized complex structure. Moreover the model is manifestly invariant under
the mirror symmetry. We derive from this model the Zucchini's two dimensional
topological sigma model with a generalized complex structure as a boundary
action on . As a special case, we obtain three dimensional
realization of a WZ-Poisson manifold.Comment: 18 page
Canonical differential geometry of string backgrounds
String backgrounds and D-branes do not possess the structure of Lorentzian
manifolds, but that of manifolds with area metric. Area metric geometry is a
true generalization of metric geometry, which in particular may accommodate a
B-field. While an area metric does not determine a connection, we identify the
appropriate differential geometric structure which is of relevance for the
minimal surface equation in such a generalized geometry. In particular the
notion of a derivative action of areas on areas emerges naturally. Area metric
geometry provides new tools in differential geometry, which promise to play a

Shot, scene and keyframe ordering for interactive video re-use
This paper presents a complete system for shot and scene detection in broadcast videos, as well as a method to select the best representative key-frames, which could be used in new interactive interfaces for accessing large collections of edited videos. The final goal is to enable an improved access to video footage and the re-use of video content with the direct management of user-selected video-clips
Conifolds and Geometric Transitions
Conifold geometries have recieved a lot of attention in string theory and
string-inspired cosmology recently, in particular the Klebanov-Strassler
background that is known as the "warped throat". It is our intention in this
article to give a pedagogical explanation for the singularity resolution in
this geometry and emphasise its connection to geometric transitions. The first
part focuses on the gauge theory dual to the Klebanov-Strassler background,
which we also explain from a T-dual intersecting branes scenario. We then make
the connection to the Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture for open/closed string duality
and summarise a series of papers verifying this model on the supergravity
level.
An appendix provides extensive background material about conifold geometries.
We pay special attention to their complex structures and re-evaluate the
supersymmetry conditions on the background flux in constructions with
fractional D3-branes on the singular (Klebanov-Tseytlin) and resolved (Pando
Zayas-Tseytlin) conifolds. We agree with earlier results that only the singular
solution allows a supersymmetric flux, but point out the importance of using

N=1 effective potential from dual type-IIA D6/O6 orientifolds with general fluxes
We consider N=1 compactifications of the type-IIA theory on the T6/(Z2xZ2)
orbifold and O6 orientifold, in the presence of D6-branes and general NSNS, RR
and Scherk-Schwarz geometrical fluxes. Introducing a suitable dual formulation
of the theory, we derive and solve the Bianchi identities, and show how certain
combinations of fluxes can relax the constraints on D6-brane configurations
coming from the cancellation of RR tadpoles. We then compute, via generalized
dimensional reduction, the N=1, D=4 effective potential for the seven main
moduli, and comment on the relation with truncated N=4 gaugings. As a
byproduct, we obtain a general geometrical expression for the superpotential.
We finally identify a family of fluxes, compatible with all Bianchi identities,

Radiation-dominated area metric cosmology
We provide further crucial support for a refined, area metric structure of
spacetime. Based on the solution of conceptual issues, such as the consistent
coupling of fermions and the covariant identification of radiation fields on
area metric backgrounds, we show that the radiation-dominated epoch of area
metric cosmology is equivalent to that epoch in standard Einstein cosmology.
This ensures, in particular, successful nucleosynthesis. This surprising result
complements the previously derived prediction of a small late-time acceleration
