    A Case Report and Overview of Familial Cerebral Cavernous Malformation Pathogenesis in an Adult Patient

    OBJECTIVE We present a case of a 39 year-old woman who presented with a solitary cavernous malformation hemorrhage without any other lesions, and subsequently presented several months later with a new hemorrhage from a de novo lesion. We discuss mechanisms of paradominant inheritance and haploinsufficiency to describe phenotype expression of familial cavernous malformations. CASE DESCRIPTION The patient presented with unremitting headaches, who had a known history of a solitary cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) for which she underwent resection several months prior with no evidence of any other CCM lesions seen on post-operative MRI. She has no history of whole brain radiation, family history of cavernous malformations, or prior head trauma. During this hospital visit, she was found to have develop two new lesions in the left fronto-parietal lobe and cerebellum. She was treated with surgical resection of the left frontoparietal lesion, and recovered fully. It is of interest that a patient approaching her fourth decade of life would start to develop formation of multiple de novo cavernous malformations, especially with an absent family history. Paradominant Inheritance and haploinsufficiency are two proposed models of inheritance that can be related to this patient’s disease progression.     A METHOD FOR NON-INVASIVE, AUTOMATED BEHAVIOR CLASSIFICATION IN MICE, USING PIEZOELECTRIC PRESSURE SENSORS

    While all mammals sleep, the functions and implications of sleep are not well understood, and are a strong area of investigation in the research community. Mice are utilized in many sleep studies, with electroencephalography (EEG) signals widely used for data acquisition and analysis. However, since EEG electrodes must be surgically implanted in the mice, the method is high cost and time intensive. This work presents an extension of a previously researched high throughput, low cost, non-invasive method for mouse behavior detection and classification. A novel hierarchical classifier is presented that classifies behavior states including NREM and REM sleep, as well as active behavior states, using data acquired from a Signal Solutions (Lexington, KY) piezoelectric cage floor system. The NREM/REM classification system presented an 81% agreement with human EEG scorers, indicating a useful, high throughput alternative to the widely used EEG acquisition method

    Fern Reproduction at Woodman Hollow, Central Iowa: Preliminary Observations and a Consideration of the Feasibility of Studying Fern Reproductive Biology in Nature

    Field observations of spore availability, gametophyte establishment and survival, and sporophyte production were made over a one-year period. Maximum spore release for most species occurred shortly after spore maturation in mid to late summer, but some spores remained on sporophyte fronds through the winter and were available for germination the following spring. Gametophytes of Cystopteris fragilis, Woodsia obtusa and Adiantum pedatum became established in late summer and fall. Production of sporophytes occurred both in fall and in the following spring. Both gametophytes and juvenile sporophytes survived the winter in relatively unchanged condition. Results indicate that it is feasible and important to correlate field studies with current laboratory studies of fern reproductive biology

    HI Detection in two Dwarf S0 Galaxies in Nearby Groups: ESO384-016 and NGC 59

    An \hi survey of 10 dE/dS0 galaxies in the nearby Sculptor and Centaurus A groups was made using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The observed galaxies have accurate distances derived by Jerjen et al (1998; 2000b) using the surface brightness fluctuation technique. Their absolute magnitudes are in the range −9.5>MB>−15.3-9.5 > M_B > -15.3. Only two of the ten galaxies were detected at our detection limit (∼1.0×106\sim 1.0 \times 10^6 \msol for the Centaurus group and ∼5.3×105\sim 5.3 \times 10^5 \msol for the Sculptor group), the two dS0 galaxies ESO384-016 in the Centaurus A Group and NGC 59 in the Sculptor Group, with \hi masses of 6.0±0.5×1066.0 \pm 0.5 \times 10^6 \msol and 1.4±0.1×1071.4 \pm 0.1 \times 10^7 \msol respectively. Those two detections were confirmed using the Green Bank Telescope. These small \hi reservoirs could fuel future generations of low level star formation and could explain the bluer colors seen at the center of the detected galaxies.     Maintaining the health and safety of the crews of spacecraft remain the highest priorities. Health monitoring requires at least two overlapping activities: (1) frequent or continuous monitoring of bodily functions to determine normalcy or deviation from normalcy, and (2) specific diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Thus, with a broad mandate and limited resources, the spacecraft must provide the diagnostic capabilities for quickly and accurately diagnosing a wide range of diseases. Optical devices, though still in the early developmental stages, diagnose diseases by analyzing and quantitating the spectra of metabolites and other substances non-invasively and without using chemical reagents. Once commercially available, optical devices will replace many clinical tests that use chemical reagents for diagnostics

    Nutritional Intervention Restores Muscle but Not Kidney Phenotypes in Adult Calcineurin Aα Null Mice

    Mice lacking the α isoform of the catalytic subunit of calcineurin (CnAα) were first reported in 1996 and have been an important model to understand the role of calcineurin in the brain, immune system, bones, muscle, and kidney. Research using the mice has been limited, however, by failure to thrive and early lethality of most null pups. Work in our laboratory led to the rescue of CnAα-/- mice by supplemental feeding to compensate for a defect in salivary enzyme secretion. The data revealed that, without intervention, knockout mice suffer from severe caloric restriction. Since nutritional deprivation is known to significantly alter development, it is imperative that previous conclusions based on CnAα-/- mice are revisited to determine which aspects of the phenotype were attributable to caloric restriction versus a direct role for CnAα. In this study, we find that defects in renal development and function persist in adult CnAα-/- mice including a significant decrease in glomerular filtration rate and an increase in blood urea nitrogen levels. These data indicate that impaired renal development we previously reported was not due to caloric restriction but rather a specific role for CnAα in renal development and function. In contrast, we find that rather than being hypoglycemic, rescued mice are mildly hyperglycemic and insulin resistant. Examination of muscle fiber types shows that previously reported reductions in type I muscle fibers are no longer evident in rescued null mice. Rather, loss of CnAα likely alters insulin response due to a reduction in insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS2) expression and signaling in muscle. This study illustrates the importance of re-examining the phenotypes of CnAα-/- mice and the advances that are now possible with the use of adult, rescued knockout animals

    Comments on the distribution of \u3ci\u3eBotrychium lunarioides\u3c/i\u3e (Ophioglossaceae) in Texas

    Botrychium lunarioides (Michx.) Sw. (Ophioglossaceae) is now known to be widespread and abundant throughout the eastern portion of Texas. In 1996, Do, et al. reported ten additional county records in the central portion of the Post Oak Savannah of Texas, thereby extending the known distribution of the species up to 273 km to the west. Additional field studies during 1996 have yielded nineteen new county records for the species in Texas. These new reports are primarily from the Post Oak Savannah, Pineywoods, and Blackland Prairies of northeast Texas and from the southern portion of the Post Oak Savannah. The most notable occurrence of the species is at Lake Bastrop State Recreation Area, Bastrop County, about 45 km ESE of Austin, which extends both the western and southern known limits of the species
