Urn Models and Beta-splines
Some insight into the properties of beta-splines is gained by applying the techniques of urn models. Urn models are used to construct beta-spline basis functions and to derive the basic properties of these blending functions and the corresponding beta-spline curves. Only the simple notion of linear geometric continuity and with the most elementary beta parameter are outlined. Non-linear geometric continuity leads to additional beta parameters and to more complicated basis functions. Whether urn models can give us any insight into these higher order concepts still remains to be investigated
Threaded pilot insures cutting tool alignment
Threaded pilot allows machining of a port component, or boss, after the reciprocating hole has been threaded. It is used to align cutting surfaces with the boss threads, thus insuring precision alignment
Pion LINAC as an Energy-Tagged Neutrino Source
The energy spectrum and flux of neutrinos from a linear pion accelerator are
calculated analytically under the assumption of a uniform accelerating
gradient. The energy of a neutrino from this source reacting in a detector can
be determined from timing and event position information.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures. Replacement of Section II.D and minor

SN1987A - a Testing Ground for the KARMEN Anomaly
We show, that SN1987A can serve as an astrophysical laboratory for testing
the viability of the assertion that a new massive neutral fermion is implied by
the KARMEN data. We show that a wide range of the parameters characterizing the
proposed particle is ruled out by the above constraints making this
interpretation very unlikely.Comment: 12 pages, 1 eps figure embedded, to appear in Phys. Lett.
Quantized Rabi Oscillations and Circular Dichroism in Quantum Hall Systems
The dissipative response of a quantum system upon a time-dependent drive can
be exploited as a probe of its geometric and topological properties. In this
work, we explore the implications of such phenomena in the context of
two-dimensional gases subjected to a uniform magnetic field. It is shown that a
filled Landau level exhibits a quantized circular dichroism, which can be
traced back to its underlying non-trivial topology. Based on selection rules,
we find that this quantized circular dichroism can be suitably described in
terms of Rabi oscillations, whose frequencies satisfy simple quantization laws.
Moreover, we discuss how these quantized dissipative responses can be probed
locally, both in the bulk and at the boundaries of the quantum Hall system.
This work suggests alternative forms of topological probes in quantum systems
based on circular dichroism.Comment: 7 pages, including 3 figures and Appendi
Experimental investigation of hypersonic buzz on a high cross-range shuttle configuration
A wind tunnel investigation has been conducted to determine the nature of an unsteady hypersonic flow phenomenon, often referred to as hypersonic buzz, on a 1:100 scale model representative of a high cross-range shuttle configuration. The tests, conducted in helium at a nominal Mach number of 17.5, were specifically directed at obtaining a better understanding of the character of the hypersonic flow field in the vicinity of a deflected control surface. Power spectral densities and root mean squared values of surface pressure fluctuations are presented along with observations made from high speed motion pictures, schlieren and oil flow photographs. Flap deflections of 0, 20, 30, 35, 40 and 60 deg were tested at various angles of attack from 0 deg to 37 deg. It is quite clear from these tests that, under certain conditions, extremely unstable hypersonic flow patterns are formed
