User's guide for SBUV/TOMS ozone derivative products
A series of products are available derived from the total-ozone and ozone vertical profile results for the Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet/Total-Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (SBUV/TOMS) Nimbus-7 operation. Products available are (1) orbital height-latitude cross sections of the SBUV profile data, (2) daily global total ozone contours in polar coordinates, (3) daily averages of total ozone in global 5x5 degree latitude-longitude grid, (4) daily, monthly and quarterly averages of total ozone and profile data in 10 degree latitude zones, (5) tabular presentation of zonal means, (6) daily global total ozone and profile contours in polar coordinates. The ""Derivative Products User's Guide'' describes each of these products in detail, including their derivation and presentation format. Information is provided on how to order the tapes and microfilm from the National Space Science Data Center
Nimbus 7 solar backscatter ultraviolet (SBUV) ozone products user's guide
Three ozone tape products from the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV) experiment aboard Nimbus 7 were archived at the National Space Science Data Center. The experiment measures the fraction of incoming radiation backscattered by the Earth's atmosphere at 12 wavelengths. In-flight measurements were used to monitor changes in the instrument sensitivity. Total column ozone is derived by comparing the measurements with calculations of what would be measured for different total ozone amounts. The altitude distribution is retrieved using an optimum statistical technique for the inversion. The estimated initial error in the absolute scale for total ozone is 2 percent, with a 3 percent drift over 8 years. The profile error depends on latitude and height, smallest at 3 to 10 mbar; the drift increases with increasing altitude. Three tape products are described. The High Density SBUV (HDSBUV) tape contains the final derived products - the total ozone and the vertical ozone profile - as well as much detailed diagnostic information generated during the retrieval process. The Compressed Ozone (CPOZ) tape contains only that subset of HDSBUV information, including total ozone and ozone profiles, considered most useful for scientific studies. The Zonal Means Tape (ZMT) contains daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly averages of the derived quantities over 10 deg latitude zones
COST 733 - WG4: Applications of weather type classification
The main objective of the COST Action 733 is to achieve a general numerical method for
assessing, comparing and classifying typical weather situations in the European regions. To
accomplish this goal, different workgroups are established, each with their specific aims:
WG1: Existing methods and applications (finished); WG2: Implementation and development of
weather types classification methods; WG3: Comparison of selected weather types
classifications; WG4: Testing methods for various applications.
The main task of Workgroup 4 (WG4) in COST 733 implies the testing of the selected weather
type methods for various classifications. In more detail, WG4 focuses on the following topics:•
Selection of dedicated applications (using results from WG1),
• Performance of the selected applications using available weather types provided by WG2,
• Intercomparison of the application results as a results of different methods
• Final assessment of the results and uncertainties,
• Presentation and release of results to the other WGs and external interested
• Recommend specifications for a new (common) method WG2

In order to address these specific aims, various applications are selected and WG4 is divided in
subgroups accordingly:

3. Forest fires
4. Climate change and variability
5. Risks and hazards
Simultaneously, the special attention is paid to the several wide topics concerning some other
COST Actions such as: phenology (COST725), biometeorology (COST730), agriculture (COST 734)
and mesoscale modelling and air pollution (COST728).

Inositol Pyrophosphate-Controlled Kinetochore Architecture and Mitotic Entry in S. pombe
Inositol pyrophosphates (IPPs) comprise a specific class of signaling molecules that regulate central biological processes in eukaryotes. The conserved Vip1/PPIP5K family controls intracellular IP8 levels, the highest phosphorylated form of IPPs present in yeasts, as it has both inositol kinase and pyrophosphatase activities. Previous studies have shown that the fission yeast S. pombe Vip1/PPIP5K family member Asp1 impacts chromosome transmission fidelity via the modulation of spindle function. We now demonstrate that an IP8 analogue is targeted by endogenous Asp1 and that cellular IP8 is subject to cell cycle control. Mitotic entry requires Asp1 kinase function and IP8 levels are increased at the G2/M transition. In addition, the kinetochore, the conductor of chromosome segregation that is assembled on chromosomes is modulated by IP8. Members of the yeast CCAN kinetochore-subcomplex such as Mal2/CENP-O localize to the kinetochore depending on the intracellular IP8-level: higher than wild-type IP8 levels reduce Mal2 kinetochore targeting, while a reduction in IP8 has the opposite effect. As our perturbations of the inositol polyphosphate and IPP pathways demonstrate that kinetochore architecture depends solely on IP8 and not on other IPPs, we conclude that chromosome transmission fidelity is controlled by IP8 via an interplay between entry into mitosis, kinetochore architecture, and spindle dynamics.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)Medical Research Council (MRC)Peer Reviewe
Ambient Pressure XPS Study of Mixed Conducting Perovskite-type SOFC Cathode and Anode Materials under Well-Defined Electrochemical Polarization
The oxygen exchange activity of mixed conducting oxide surfaces has been widely investigated, but a detailed understanding of the corresponding reaction mechanisms and the rate-limiting steps is largely still missing. Combined in situ investigation of electrochemically polarized model electrode surfaces under realistic temperature and pressure conditions by near-ambient pressure (NAP) XPS and impedance spectroscopy enables very surface-sensitive chemical analysis and may detect species that are involved in the rate-limiting step. In the present study, acceptor-doped perovskite-type La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ (LSC), La0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ (LSF), and SrTi0.7Fe0.3O3-δ (STF) thin film model electrodes were investigated under well-defined electrochemical polarization as cathodes in oxidizing (O2) and as anodes in reducing (H2/H2O) atmospheres. In oxidizing atmosphere all materials exhibit additional surface species of strontium and oxygen. The polaron-type electronic conduction mechanism of LSF and STF and the metal-like mechanism of LSC are reflected by distinct differences in the valence band spectra. Switching between oxidizing and reducing atmosphere as well as electrochemical polarization cause reversible shifts in the measured binding energy. This can be correlated to a Fermi level shift due to variations in the chemical potential of oxygen. Changes of oxidation states were detected on Fe, which appears as FeIII in oxidizing atmosphere and as mixed FeII/III in H2/H2O. Cathodic polarization in reducing atmosphere leads to the reversible formation of a catalytically active Fe0 phase
What makes implementation intentions (in)effective for physical activity among older adults?
Objectives: For most populations, implementation intentions (IIs) facilitate physical activity (PA). However, for older adults, previous studies found mixed evidence for the effectiveness of this behaviour change technique (BCT). To examine which characteristics of IIs predict successful enactment, the content of older participants’ IIs formed within a self-regulatory intervention to prompt PA was analysed. Design: A sample of N = 126 German speaking adults aged 64 and older formed up to six IIs for PA and reported their enactment five weeks later. Methods: Controlling for age and sex, multilevel models tested associations between characteristics of IIs (e.g., chronological rank of II, hetero- and homogeneity, specificity, presence of certain cues) and enactment. Results: Significantly related to enactment were: the chronological rank of an II (first IIs superior to last IIs), greater heterogeneity in activities, greater specificity of when-cues, and greater use of pre-existing routines. Conclusions: Participants were more likely to enact their IIs five weeks later if they planned different (heterogeneous) activities, created IIs with more specific when-cues (e.g., on Monday at 9 am), and in particular a routine (e.g., after breakfast). They also enacted the first three IIs (chronological rank of II) more often than the last three IIs. Future experimental studies should test whether providing instructions to create IIs based on the above significant characteristics lead to more effective health behaviour change among older adults
