Test lead wire attachment quickly and securely engages screw head by expansion against the side walls of the screw head slot. Heat shrinkable tubing is used for the forward and shaft ends to insulate the device from accidental contact

A computer model of auditory efferent suppression: Implications for the recognition of speech in noise

The neural mechanisms underlying the ability of human listeners to recognize speech in the presence of background noise are still imperfectly understood. However, there is mounting evidence that the medial olivocochlear system plays an important role, via efferents that exert a suppressive effect on the response of the basilar membrane. The current paper presents a computer modeling study that investigates the possible role of this activity on speech intelligibility in noise. A model of auditory efferent processing [ Ferry, R. T., and Meddis, R. (2007). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 122, 3519?3526 ] is used to provide acoustic features for a statistical automatic speech recognition system, thus allowing the effects of efferent activity on speech intelligibility to be quantified. Performance of the ?basic? model (without efferent activity) on a connected digit recognition task is good when the speech is uncorrupted by noise but falls when noise is present. However, recognition performance is much improved when efferent activity is applied. Furthermore, optimal performance is obtained when the amount of efferent activity is proportional to the noise level. The results obtained are consistent with the suggestion that efferent suppression causes a ?release from adaptation? in the auditory-nerve response to noisy speech, which enhances its intelligibility

    Asia-Europe: the third link

The report provides a comprehensive analysis of Europe-East Asia interdependences (in terms of relative economic weights, trade and financial integration, trade and financial flows, exchange rate and wealth transfers). The prime motivation of the paper is that linkages between Europe and East Asia remain frequently underestimated. While the ñ€Ɠthird linkñ€ between them is in many respects as important as the linkages between the two regions and North America, it is too often regarded only as of secondary importance.Regional integration, Financial integration, Trade integration, East Asia, European Monetary Union, Pisani-Ferry , Cohen-Setton

Magnetoconductance of the quantum spin Hall state

We study numerically the edge magnetoconductance of a quantum spin Hall insulator in the presence of quenched nonmagnetic disorder. For a finite magnetic field B and disorder strength W on the order of the bulk gap E_g, the conductance deviates from its quantized value in a manner which appears to be linear in |B| at small B. The observed behavior is in qualitative agreement with the cusp-like features observed in recent magnetotransport measurements on HgTe quantum wells. We propose a dimensional crossover scenario as a function of W, in which for weak disorder W < E_g the edge liquid is analogous to a disordered spinless 1D quantum wire, while for strong disorder W > E_g, the disorder causes frequent virtual transitions to the 2D bulk, where the originally 1D edge electrons can undergo 2D diffusive motion and 2D antilocalization.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Public affairs broadcasting on the CBS television network.

Thesis (M.S.)--Boston UniversityThis investigation surveys and analyzes the CBS Television Network and its Public Affairs Department. Each chapter of this thesis deals with a different area of CBS public affairs broadcasting. Chapter I deals with the early history and growth of public affairs on the CBS Television Network. Chapter II is devoted to public affairs broadcasting and the network structure, the relationship between CBS News and CBS Public Affairs, and the relationship of programming to network polices. Chapter III studies the structure of the Public Affairs Department, in terms of its relationship to personnel organization, finances, programming philosophy, and program coverage. Recent developments in public affairs broadcasting are considered in Chapters IV and V. Treads in sponsorship of public affairs programs, along with the amount of sponsor influence on program content is discussed. Such new developments as the use of video tape, international television, and program exchange and distribution in dealt with. Chapter VI examines the type of audience available for public affairs programs, response to programs, and methods used by the Department to measure response. The last chapter of this study is devoted to summary, conclusions, and a critical evaluation of the Department's role in broadcasting. [TRUNCATED

Equity of Inpatient Health Care in Rural Tanzania:\ud A Population- and Facility-Based Survey

To explore the equity of utilization of inpatient health care at rural Tanzanian health centers through the use of a short wealth questionnaire. Methods: Patients admitted to four rural health centers in the Kigoma Region of Tanzania from May 2008 to May 2009 were surveyed about their illness, asset ownership and demographics. Principal component analysis was used to compare the wealth of the inpatients to the wealth of the region’s general population, using data from a previous population-based survey. Among inpatients, 15.3% were characterized as the most poor, 19.6% were characterized as very poor, 16.5% were characterized as poor, 18.9% were characterized as less poor, and 29.7% were characterized as the least poor. The wealth distribution of all inpatients (p < 0.0001), obstetric inpatients (p < 0.0001), other inpatients (p < 0.0001), and fee-exempt inpatients (p < 0.001) were significantly different than the wealth distribution in the community population, with poorer patients underrepresented among inpatients. The wealth distribution of pediatric inpatients (p = 0.2242) did not significantly differ from the population at large. The findings indicated that while current Tanzanian health financing policies may have improved access to health care for children under five, additional policies are needed to further close the equity gap, especially for obstetric inpatients.\u

Nonlinear Transport of Bose-Einstein Condensates Through Waveguides with Disorder

We study the coherent flow of a guided Bose-Einstein condensate incident over a disordered region of length L. We introduce a model of disordered potential that originates from magnetic fluctuations inherent to microfabricated guides. This model allows for analytical and numerical studies of realistic transport experiments. The repulsive interaction among the condensate atoms in the beam induces different transport regimes. Below some critical interaction (or for sufficiently small L) a stationary flow is observed. In this regime, the transmission decreases exponentially with L. For strong interaction (or large L), the system displays a transition towards a time dependent flow with an algebraic decay of the time averaged transmission.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

Coherent transport through graphene nanoribbons in the presence of edge disorder

We simulate electron transport through graphene nanoribbons of experimentally realizable size (length L up to 2 micrometer, width W approximately 40 nm) in the presence of scattering at rough edges. Our numerical approach is based on a modular recursive Green's function technique that features sub-linear scaling with L of the computational effort. We identify the influence of the broken A-B sublattice (or chiral) symmetry and of K-K' scattering by Fourier spectroscopy of individual scattering states. For long ribbons we find Anderson-localized scattering states with a well-defined exponential decay over 10 orders of magnitude in amplitude.Comment: 8 pages, 6 Figure
