Erupting Dwarf Novae in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We report the first likely detections of erupting Dwarf Novae (DN) in an
external galaxy: the Large Magellanic Cloud. Six candidates were isolated from
approximately a million stars observed every second night over 11 nights with
the CTIO 8K x 8K Mosaic2 CCD imager. Artificial dwarf nova and completeness
tests suggest that we are seeing only the brightest of the LMC DN, probably SS
Cygni-like CVs, but possibly SU UMa-type cataclysmics undergoing
superoutbursts. We derive crude but useful limits on the LMC DN surface
density, and on the number of DN in the LMC. Many thousands of cataclysmic
variables in the Magellanic Clouds can be discovered and characterized with 8

Explaining the effectiveness of performance-based logistics: a quantitative examination
The article of record as published may be located at http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/09574091111181354Purpose – Performance-based logistics (PBL) strategies are providing governments and for-profit
organizations with a contractual mechanism that reduces the life cycle costs of their systems. PBL
accomplishes this by establishing contracts that focus on the delivery of performance not parts. PBL
establishes a metric based governance structure where suppliers make more profit when they invest in
logistics process improvements, or system redesign, that reduces total cost of ownership. While work
has been done to outline an overall PBL theoretical framework, the underlying theory explaining the
enablers that lead to organizational and team-level, team-goal alignment associated with the PBL
governance structure requires testing. The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively test previously
posited relationships between enablers of PBL and PBL effectiveness. An additional objective is to

Unsolicited written narratives as a methodological genre in terminal illness: challenges and limitations
Stories about illness have proven invaluable in helping health professionals understand illness experiences. Such narratives have traditionally been solicited by researchers through interviews and the collection of personal writings, including diaries. These approaches are, however, researcher driven; the impetus for the creation of the story comes from the researcher and not the narrator. In recent years there has been exponential growth in illness narratives created by individuals, of their own volition, and made available for others to read in print or as Internet accounts. We sought to determine whether it was possible to identify such material for use as research data to explore the subject of living with the terminal illness amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease—the contention being that these accounts are narrator driven and therefore focus on issues of greatest importance to the affected person. We encountered and sought to overcome a number of methodological and ethical challenges, which is our focus here
Hierarchical galaxy formation and substructure in the Galaxy's stellar halo
We develop an explicit model for the formation of the stellar halo from
tidally disrupted, accreted dwarf satellites in the cold dark matter (CDM)
framework, focusing on predictions testable with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS) and other wide-field surveys. Subhalo accretion and orbital evolution
are calculated using a semi-analytic approach within the Press-Schechter
formalism. Motivated by our previous work, we assume that low-mass subhalos (v
< 30 km/s) can form significant populations of stars only if they accreted a
substantial fraction of their mass before the epoch of reionization. With this
assumption, the model reproduces the observed velocity function of galactic
satellites in the Local Group, solving the ``dwarf satellite problem'' without
modifying the popular LCDM cosmology. The disrupted satellites yield a stellar
distribution with a total mass and radial density profile consistent with those
observed for the Milky Way stellar halo. Most significantly, the model predicts
the presence of many large-scale, coherent substructures in the outer halo.
These substructures are remnants of individual, tidally disrupted dwarf
satellite galaxies. Substructure is more pronounced at large galactocentric
radii because of the smaller number density of tidal streams and the longer
orbital times. This model provides a natural explanation for the coherent
structures in the outer stellar halo found in the SDSS commissioning data, and
it predicts that many more such structures should be found as the survey covers
more of the sky. The detection (or non-detection) and characterization of such
structures could eventually test variants of the CDM scenario, especially those
that aim to solve the dwarf satellite problem by enhancing satellite

Characterization of metal ion-induced [3H]inositol hexakisphosphate binding to rat cerebellar membranes
The binding of [3H]inositol hexakisphosphate ([3H] InsP6) to rat cerebellar membranes has been characterized with the objective of establishing the role, if any, of a membrane protein receptor. In the presence of EDTA, we have previously identified an InsP6-binding site with a capacity of approximately 20 pmol/mg protein (Hawkins, P. T., Reynolds, D. J. M., Poyner, D. R., and Hanley, M. R. (1990) Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 167, 819-827). However, in the presence of 1 mM Mg2+, the capacity of [3H]InsP6 binding to membranes was increased approximately 9-fold. This enhancing effect of Mg2+ was reversed by addition of 10 microM of several cation chelators, suggesting that the increased binding required trace quantities of other metal cations. This is supported by experiments where it was possible to saturate binding by addition of excess membranes, despite not significantly depleting radioligand, pointing to removal of some other factor. Removal of endogenous cations from the binding assay by pretreatment with chelex resin also prevents the Mg(2+)-induced potentiation. Consideration of the specificity of the chelators able to abolish this potentiation suggested involvement of Fe3+ or Al3+. Both these ions (but not several others) were able to increase [3H]InsP6 binding to chelex-pretreated membranes at concentrations of 1 microM. It is possible to demonstrate synergy between Fe3+ and Mg2+ under these conditions. We propose that [3H]InsP6 may interact with membranes through non-protein recognition possibly via phospholipids, in a manner dependent upon trace metals.
