Detecting and Studying Higgs Bosons at a Photon-Photon Collider
We examine the potential for detecting and studying Higgs bosons at a
photon-photon collider facility associated with a future linear collider. Our
study incorporates realistic \gam\gam luminosity spectra based on the most
probable available laser technology. Results include detector simulations. We
study the cases of: a) a SM-like Higgs boson; b) the heavy MSSM Higgs bosons;
c) a Higgs boson with no couplings from a general two Higgs doublet
model.Comment: 52 pages, 26 figures, revised version with new appendi
Electroweak Radiative Corrections to Neutral-Current Drell-Yan Processes at Hadron Colliders
We calculate the complete electroweak O(alpha) corrections to pp, pbar p ->
l+l- X (l=e, mu) in the Standard Model of electroweak interactions. They
comprise weak and photonic virtual one-loop corrections as well as real photon
radiation to the parton-level processes q bar q -> gamma,Z -> l+l-. We study in
detail the effect of the radiative corrections on the l+l- invariant mass
distribution, the cross section in the Z boson resonance region, and on the
forward-backward asymmetry, A_FB, at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large
Hadron Collider. The weak corrections are found to increase the Z boson cross
section by about 1%, but have little effect on the forward-backward asymmetry
in the Z peak region. Threshold effects of the W box diagrams lead to
pronounced effects in A_FB at m(l+l-) approx 160 GeV which, however, will be
difficult to observe experimentally. At high di-lepton invariant masses, the
non-factorizable weak corrections are found to become large.Comment: Revtex3 file, 39 pages, 2 tables, 12 figure
Electroweak Sudakov Logarithms and Real Gauge-Boson Radiation in the TeV Region
Electroweak radiative corrections give rise to large negative,
double-logarithmically enhanced corrections in the TeV region. These are partly
compensated by real radiation and, moreover, affected by selecting
isospin-noninvariant external states. We investigate the impact of real gauge
boson radiation more quantitatively by considering different restricted final
state configurations. We consider successively a massive abelian gauge theory,
a spontaneously broken SU(2) theory and the electroweak Standard Model. We find
that details of the choice of the phase space cuts, in particular whether a
fraction of collinear and soft radiation is included, have a strong impact on
the relative amount of real and virtual corrections.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure
Top quark production at future lepton colliders in the asymptotic regime
The production of a tt(bar) pair from lepton-antilepton annihilation is
considered for values of the center of mass energy much larger than the top
mass, typically of the few TeV size. In this regime a number of simplifications
occurs that allows to derive the leading asymptotic terms of various
observables using the same theoretical description that was used for light
quark production. Explicit examples are shown for the Standard Model and the
Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model cases.Comment: 20 pages and 13 figures. e-mail: [email protected]
The Two-Loop Scale Dependence of the Static QCD Potential including Quark Masses
The interaction potential V(Q^2) between static test charges can be used to
define an effective charge and a physically-based
renormalization scheme for quantum chromodynamics and other gauge theories. In
this paper we use recent results for the finite-mass fermionic corrections to
the heavy-quark potential at two-loops to derive the next-to-leading order term
for the Gell Mann-Low function of the V-scheme. The resulting effective number
of flavors in the scheme is determined as a
gauge-independent and analytic function of the ratio of the momentum transfer
to the quark pole mass. The results give automatic decoupling of heavy quarks
and are independent of the renormalization procedure. Commensurate scale
relations then provide the next-to-leading order connection between all
perturbatively calculable observables to the analytic and gauge-invariant
scheme without any scale ambiguity and a well defined number of
active flavors. The inclusion of the finite quark mass effects in the running
of the coupling is compared with the standard treatment of finite quark mass
effects in the scheme.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figure
Resummation of double logarithms in electroweak high energy processes
At future linear collider experiments in the TeV range, Sudakov
double logarithms originating from massive boson exchange can lead to
significant corrections to the cross sections of the observable processes.
These effects are important for the high precision objectives of the Next
Linear Collider. We use the infrared evolution equation, based on a gauge
invariant dispersive method, to obtain double logarithmic asymptotics of
scattering amplitudes and discuss how it can be applied, in the case of broken
gauge symmetry, to the Standard Model of electroweak processes. We discuss the
double logarithmic effects to both non-radiative processes and to processes
accompanied by soft gauge boson emission. In all cases the Sudakov double
logarithms are found to exponentiate. We also discuss double logarithmic
effects of a non-Sudakov type which appear in Regge-like processes.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figures, Latex2
CP--violating Chargino Contributions to the Higgs Coupling to Photon Pairs in the Decoupling Regime of Higgs Sector
In most supersymmetric theories, charginos belong to
the class of the lightest supersymmetric particles and the couplings of Higgs
bosons to charginos are in general complex so that the CP--violating chargino
contributions to the loop--induced coupling of the lightest Higgs boson to
photon pairs can be sizable even in the decoupling limit of large pseudoscalar
mass with only the lightest Higgs boson kinematically accessible at
future high energy colliders. We introduce a specific benchmark scenario of CP
violation consistent with the electric dipole moment constraints and with a
commonly accepted baryogenesis mechanism in the minimal supersymmetric Standard
Model. Based on the benchmark scenario of CP violation, we demonstrate that the
fusion of the lightest Higgs boson in linearly polarized photon--photon
collisions can allow us to confirm the existence of the CP--violating chargino
contributions {\it even in the decoupling regime of the Higgs sector} for
nearly degenerate SU(2) gaugino and higgsino mass parameters of about the
electroweak scale.Comment: 1+13 pages, 3 eps figure
Electroweak corrections to W-boson pair production at the LHC
Vector-boson pair production ranks among the most important Standard-Model
benchmark processes at the LHC, not only in view of on-going Higgs analyses.
These processes may also help to gain a deeper understanding of the electroweak
interaction in general, and to test the validity of the Standard Model at
highest energies. In this work, the first calculation of the full one-loop
electroweak corrections to on-shell W-boson pair production at hadron colliders
is presented. We discuss the impact of the corrections on the total cross
section as well as on relevant differential distributions. We observe that
corrections due to photon-induced channels can be amazingly large at energies
accessible at the LHC, while radiation of additional massive vector bosons does
not influence the results significantly.Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables; some references and comments on

Proinsulin C-peptide elicits disaggregation of insulin resulting in enhanced physiological insulin effects
Using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), proinsulin C-peptide was found to influence insulin-insulin interactions. In SPR with chip-bound insulin, C-peptide mixed with analyte insulin increased the binding, while alone C-peptide did not. A control peptide with the same residues in random sequence had little effect. In ESI-MS, C-peptide lowered the presence of insulin hexamer. The data suggest that C-peptide promotes insulin disaggregation. Insulin/insulin oligomer μM dissociation constants were determined. Compatible with these findings, type 1 diabetic patients receiving insulin and C-peptide developed 66% more stimulation of glucose metabolism than when given insulin alone. A role of C-peptide in promoting insulin disaggregation may be important physiologically during exocytosis of pancreatic β-cell secretory granulae and pharmacologically at insulin injection sites. It is compatible with the normal co-release of C-peptide and insulin and may contribute to the beneficial effect of C-peptide and insulin replacement in type 1 diabetics
