Adaptive Probability Theory: Human Biases as an Adaptation
Humans make mistakes in our decision-making and probability judgments. While the heuristics used for decision-making have been explained as adaptations that are both efficient and fast, the reasons why people deal with probabilities using the reported biases have not been clear. We will see that some of these biases can be understood as heuristics developed to explain a complex world when little information is available. That is, they approximate Bayesian inferences for situations more complex than the ones in laboratory experiments and in this sense might have appeared as an adaptation to those situations. When ideas as uncertainty and limited sample sizes are included in the problem, the correct probabilities are changed to values close to the observed behavior. These ideas will be used to explain the observed weight functions, the violations of coalescing and stochastic dominance reported in the literature
Decoherence and multipartite entanglement
We study the dynamics of multipartite entanglement under the influence of
decoherence. A suitable generalization of concurrence reveals distinct scaling

The lichen flora of the Chagos Archipelago : including a comparison with other island and coastal tropical floras
The 1996 Chagos Expedition provided the first opportunity to study the archipelago’s lichen flora. Seventeen of the 55 islands were ecologically investigated, some in more detail than others, and lists and representative collections of lichens have been assembled for many of them. In all, 67 taxa have been recorded, 52 to specific level. Although the islands have a low biodiversity for cryptogamic plants, as would be expected in terms of their relatively young age, remoteness and small terrestrial surface areas, those taxa that are present are often found in abundance and play significant ecological roles. There is a good correlation between total lichen biodiversity and island size, despite the fact that Cocos nucifera is such an important substratum for cryptogamic plants and its presence on all islands studied provides a consistently high associated species count. Comparisons of lichen floras for ten island and coastal tropical areas show good correlations (based on the Sörensen Coefficient) within the Indian Ocean as would be expected, but poorer correlations exist within and between Pacific Ocean and neotropical floras. Ranked correlations between Chagos and other floras are in the sequence Maldives > Laing Island > Aldabra > Tuamotu > Pitcairn > N.Mariana & Belize > Guadeloupe > Cook. When coefficients are calculated using only the Physciaceae, different correlations and sequences are derived, but the affinities of the Indian Ocean islands remain strong. However, although the lichen flora of Chagos is characteristic for an Indian Ocean, it is dominated by pantropical species
An Inverse Method for Policy-Iteration Based Algorithms
We present an extension of two policy-iteration based algorithms on weighted
graphs (viz., Markov Decision Problems and Max-Plus Algebras). This extension
allows us to solve the following inverse problem: considering the weights of
the graph to be unknown constants or parameters, we suppose that a reference
instantiation of those weights is given, and we aim at computing a constraint
on the parameters under which an optimal policy for the reference instantiation
is still optimal. The original algorithm is thus guaranteed to behave well
around the reference instantiation, which provides us with some criteria of
robustness. We present an application of both methods to simple examples. A
prototype implementation has been done
Entanglement dynamics under decoherence: from qubits to qudits
We investigate the time evolution of entanglement for bipartite systems of
arbitrary dimensions under the influence of decoherence. For qubits, we
determine the precise entanglement decay rates under different
system-environment couplings, including finite temperature effects. For qudits,
we show how to obtain upper bounds for the decay rates and also present exact
