Controllable selective exfoliation of high-quality graphene nanosheets and nanodots by ionic liquid assisted grinding
Bulk quantities of graphene nanosheets and nanodots have been selectively
fabricated by mechanical grinding exfoliation of natural graphite in a small
quantity of ionic liquids. The resulting graphene sheets and dots are solvent
free with low levels of naturally absorbed oxygen, inherited from the starting
graphite. The sheets are only two to five layers thick. The graphene nanodots
have diameters in the range of 9-29 nm and heights in the range of 1-16 nm,

IgE-tailpiece associates with α-1-antitrypsin (A1AT) to protect IgE from proteolysis without compromising its ability to interact with FcεRI
Several splice variants of IgE exist in human plasma, including a variant called IgE-tailpiece (IgE-tp) that differs from classical IgE by the replacement of two carboxy-terminal amino acids with eight novel residues that include an ultimate cysteine. To date, the role of the secreted IgE-tp isoform in human immunity is unknown. We show that levels of IgE-tp are raised in helminth-infected donors, and that both the classical form of IgE (IgE-c) and IgE-tp interact with polymers of the serine protease inhibitor alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT). The association of IgE-tp with A1AT polymers in plasma protects the antibody from serine protease-mediated degradation, without affecting the functional interaction of IgE-tp with important receptors, including FcεR1. That polymers of A1AT protect IgE from degradation by helminth proteases may explain why these common and normally non-disease causing polymorphic variants of A1AT have been retained by natural selection. The observation that IgE can be complexed with polymeric forms of A1AT may therefore have important consequences for our understanding of the pathophysiology of pulmonary diseases that arise either as a consequence of A1AT-deficiency or through IgE-mediated type 1 hypersensitivity responses
A comparison of CFD and full-scale measurement for analysis of natural ventilation
CFD modelling techniques have been used to simulate the coupled external and internal flow in a cubic building with two dominant openings. CFD predictions of the time-averaged cross ventilation flow rates have been validated against full-scale experimental data under various weather conditions in England. RANS model predictions proved reliable when wind directions were near normal to the vent openings. However, when the fluctuating ventilation rate exceeded the mean flow, RANS models were incapable of predicting the total ventilation rate. Improved results are expected by applying more sophisticated turbulence models, such as LES or weighted quasi-steady approximations
Stellar rotational periods in the planet hosting open cluster Praesepe
By using the dense coverage of the extrasolar planet survey project HATNet,
we Fourier analyze 381 high-probability members of the nearby open cluster
Praesepe (Beehive/M44/NGC 2632). In addition to the detection of 10 variables
(of \delta Scuti and other types), we identify 180 rotational variables
(including the two known planet hosts). This sample increases the number of
known rotational variables in this cluster for spectral classes earlier than M
by more than a factor of three. These stars closely follow a color/magnitude --
period relation from early F to late K stars. We approximate this relation by
polynomials for an easier reference to the rotational characteristics in
different colors. The total (peak-to-peak) amplitudes of the large majority
(94%) of these variables span the range of 0.005 to 0.04 mag. The periods cover
a range from 2.5 to 15 days. These data strongly confirm that Praesepe and the
Hyades have the same gyrochronological ages. Regarding the two planet hosts,
Pr0211 (the one with the shorter orbital period) has a rotational period that
is ~2 days shorter than the one expected from the main rotational pattern in
this cluster. This, together with other examples discussed in the paper, may
hint that star-planet interaction via tidal dissipation can be significant in
some cases in the rotational evolution of stars hosting Hot Jupiters.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in MNRA
Human epicardial adipose tissue expresses a pathogenic profile of adipocytokines in patients with cardiovascular disease
Introduction: Inflammation contributes to cardiovascular disease and is exacerbated with
increased adiposity, particularly omental adiposity; however, the role of epicardial fat is poorly
understood.
Methods: For these studies the expression of inflammatory markers was assessed in epicardial fat
biopsies from coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients using quantitative RT-PCR. Further,
the effects of chronic medications, including statins, as well as peri-operative glucose, insulin and
potassium infusion, on gene expression were also assessed. Circulating resistin, CRP, adiponectin
and leptin levels were determined to assess inflammation.
Results: The expression of adiponectin, resistin and other adipocytokine mRNAs were
comparable to that in omental fat. Epicardial CD45 expression was significantly higher than control
depots (p < 0.01) indicating significant infiltration of macrophages. Statin treated patients showed
significantly lower epicardial expression of IL-6 mRNA, in comparison with the control abdominal
depots (p < 0.001). The serum profile of CABG patients showed significantly higher levels of both
CRP (control: 1.28 ± 1.57 μg/mL vs CABG: 9.11 ± 15.7 μg/mL; p < 0.001) and resistin (control:
10.53 ± 0.81 ng/mL vs CABG: 16.8 ± 1.69 ng/mL; p < 0.01) and significantly lower levels of
adiponectin (control: 29.1 ± 14.8 μg/mL vs CABG: 11.9 ± 6.0 μg/mL; p < 0.05) when compared to
BMI matched controls.
Conclusion: Epicardial and omental fat exhibit a broadly comparable pathogenic mRNA profile,
this may arise in part from macrophage infiltration into the epicardial fat. This study highlights that
chronic inflammation occurs locally as well as systemically potentially contributing further to the
pathogenesis of coronary artery disease
The Solar Neighborhood. XXXIV. A Search for Planets Orbiting Nearby M Dwarfs using Astrometry
Astrometric measurements are presented for seven nearby stars with previously
detected planets: six M dwarfs (GJ 317, GJ 667C, GJ 581, GJ 849, GJ 876, and GJ
1214) and one K dwarf (BD 10 3166). Measurements are also presented for six
additional nearby M dwarfs without known planets, but which are more favorable
to astrometric detections of low mass companions, as well as three binary
systems for which we provide astrometric orbit solutions. Observations have
baselines of three to thirteen years, and were made as part of the RECONS
long-term astrometry and photometry program at the CTIO/SMARTS 0.9m telescope.
We provide trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for all 16 systems, and
perform an extensive analysis of the astrometric residuals to determine the
minimum detectable companion mass for the 12 M dwarfs not having close stellar
secondaries. For the six M dwarfs with known planets, we are not sensitive to
planets, but can rule out the presence of all but the least massive brown
dwarfs at periods of 2 - 12 years. For the six more astrometrically favorable M
dwarfs, we conclude that none have brown dwarf companions, and are sensitive to
companions with masses as low as 1 for periods longer than two years.
In particular, we conclude that Proxima Centauri has no Jovian companions at
orbital periods of 2 - 12 years. These results complement previously published
M dwarf planet occurrence rates by providing astrometrically determined upper
mass limits on potential super-Jupiter companions at orbits of two years and
longer. As part of a continuing survey, these results are consistent with the
paucity of super-Jupiter and brown dwarf companions we find among the over 250
red dwarfs within 25 pc observed longer than five years in our astrometric

The Mass of the White Dwarf Companion in the Self-Lensing Binary KOI-3278: Einstein vs. Newton
KOI-3278 is a self-lensing stellar binary consisting of a white-dwarf
secondary orbiting a Sun-like primary star. Kruse and Agol (2014) noticed small
periodic brightenings every 88.18 days in the Kepler photometry and interpreted
these as the result of microlensing by a white dwarf with about 63 of the
mass of the Sun. We obtained two sets of spectra for the primary that allowed
us to derive three sets of spectroscopic estimates for its effective
temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity for the first time. We used these
values to update the Kruse and Agol (2014) Einsteinian microlensing model,
resulting in a revised mass for the white dwarf of . The spectra also allowed us to determine radial velocities and
derive orbital solutions, with good agreement between the two independent data
sets. An independent Newtonian dynamical MCMC model of the combined velocities
yielded a mass for the white dwarf of . The nominal uncertainty for the Newtonian mass is about four times
better than for the Einsteinian, vs. and the difference
between the two mass determinations is . We then present a joint
Einsteinian microlensing and Newtonian radial velocity model for KOI-3278,
which yielded a mass for the white dwarf of . This joint model does not rely on any white dwarf evolutionary
models or assumptions on the white dwarf mass-radius relation. We discuss the
benefits of a joint model of self-lensing binaries, and how future studies of
these systems can provide insight into the mass-radius relation of white

Erythropoietin response in critically ill mechanically ventilated patients: a prospective observational study
INTRODUCTION: Anemia is a common problem in critically ill patients. The etiology of anemia of critical illness is often determined to be multifactorial in the clinical setting, but the pathophysiology remains to be elucidated. Erythropoietin (EPO) is an endogenous glycoprotein hormone that serves as the primary stimulus for erythropoiesis. Recent evidence has demonstrated a blunted EPO response as a factor contributing to anemia of critical illness in specific subsets of patients. Critically ill patients requiring mechanical ventilation who exhibit anemia have not been the subject of previous studies. Our goal was to evaluate the erythropoietic response to anemia in the critically ill mechanically ventilated patient. METHODS: A prospective observational study was undertaken in the medical intensive care unit of a tertiary care, military hospital. Twenty patients admitted to the medical intensive care unit requiring mechanical ventilation for at least 72 hours were enrolled as study patients. EPO levels and complete blood count were measured 72 hours after admission and initiation of mechanical ventilation. Admission clinical and demographic data were recorded, and patients were followed for the duration of mechanical ventilation. Twenty patients diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia in the outpatient setting were enrolled as a control population. Control patients had baseline complete blood count and iron panel recorded by primary care physicians. EPO levels were measured at the time of enrollment in conjunction with complete blood count. RESULTS: The mean EPO level for the control population was 60.9 mU/ml. The mean EPO level in the mechanically ventilated patient group was 28.7 mU/ml, which was significantly less than in the control group (P = 0.035). The mean hemoglobin value was not significantly different between groups (10.6 g/dl in mechanically ventilated patients versus 10.2 g/dl in control patients; P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Mechanically ventilated patients demonstrate a blunted EPO response to anemia. Further study of therapies directed at treating anemia of critical illness and evaluating its potential impact on mechanical ventilation outcomes and mortality is warranted
